2002 attack on Sheikh Hasina's motorcade: Stay on 7 convicts' bail extended
The Supreme Court's Appellate Division Sunday upheld its chamber judge's order that stayed the High Court bail to seven convicts in a case filed over the attack on the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina's motorcade in Satkhira in 2002, and extended it till June 20.
The court also asked the state to file a leave to appeal in this connection within this time. Also, the Appellate Division has fixed June 20 for the hearing on the leave to appeal.
A full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order Sunday after hearing the state's appeal.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state while Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon stood for the convicts.
On May 25, the High Court granted bail to seven convicts in the case – Abdus Sattar, Abdus Samad, Golam Rasul, Rakib, Zahirul, Shahabuddin and Monirul Islam.
However, on May 27, the Appellate Division's Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique stayed the bail order until today.

On August 30, 2002, the then opposition leader and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's convoy came under attack as she was returning to Magura after visiting a freedom fighter's wife in Satkhira's Kalaroa.
Although Hasina survived the attack relatively unscathed, at least 12 people, including Awami League leaders and journalists, were injured, according to the case statement.
On September 2 of that year, former Kolaroa Awami League general secretary Moslem Uddin filed the case against 27 named and 70-75 unnamed accused.
The accused included several BNP leaders and activists in Satkhira. However, the case was later dismissed for not being recorded at the police station.
On February 4 this year, Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate Court convicted and sentenced 50 people in the case.

Among them, 34 convicts who were present in the courtroom, were sent behind bars the same day; the others are running away.
PM condoles death of Rangpur AL leader
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Rangpur city Awami League advisory council member and valiant freedom fighter Mir Anisul Huq Peyara.
She prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Mir Anisul, a language hero, breathed his last at around 5:50pm at a hospital in Rangpur. He was 91.

He left a son and four daughters, a host of relatives and well-wishers.
AL general secretary Obaidul Quader also expressed shock at the death of Mir Anisul.

Bangladesh has to keep friendship with all to attain development: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said Bangladesh has to maintain friendship with all as the government wants to turn the country into a developed and prosperous one.
"We want to build Bangladesh as a developed and prosperous country. I think Bangladesh has to step forward keeping friendship with all to this end," she said.
The Prime Minister was addressing a function at Shenakunja at Dhaka Cantonment on the occasion of the International Peace Keeping Day 2021.
Sheikh Hasina joined the function from Ganabhaban through video conference.
She said that the prime task of the government is to improve the economic condition of the people of the country , remove poverty, and ensure education, healthcare and employment for the future generations.

Sheikh Hasina said that keeping the theme of International Day of UN Peacekeepers, "The road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security", the government wants to establish young and youth force one of the agents for ensuring world peace.
"I believe that our young members of the armed forces and police force are ready to face the challenges of establishing world peace in the 21st century," she said.

She also said that the government wants to prepare the future force to face these challenges to ensure peace.
"The young generation has to learn that peace is the only way of development, security and welfare," she said.
The Prime Minister Bangladesh always stands ready to establish peace at any corner in the world under the UN Security Council.
She asked peacekeepers of Bangladesh Army, Navy, Air Force and Police to accomplish their responsibilities with professionalism, honesty, integrity and sincerity.
"Bangladesh has been playing very important role in maintaining world peace and security as well as building culture of peace in the world. Bangladesh’s peacekeepers are working at different UN peace missions risking their lives particularly in conflict-prone countries," she said.
Sheikh Hasina said steps have been taken to develop the Bangladesh’s peacekeepers as the most qualified through providing them with time befitting training, improved technology and equipment to face the new challenges.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s peacekeepers’ contribution in maintaining world peace, she said that they have brightened the mage of the country alongside upholding flag of the United Nations by demonstrating their efficiency.
"That’s why, Bangladesh has now become one of the highest number of peacekeeper providing countries in the world," she said.
The Prime Minister continued that some 6,742 peacekeepers are deployed in different UN missions right now and officials with the ranks of Major General and Brigadier are also there as Deputy Force Commander and Sector Commander respectively..
The Prime Minister hoped that Bangladeshi peacekeepers would be able to establish the country as a strong peace building nation in the world side by side upholding the national flag.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed and UN resident coordinator Mia Seppo also spoke at the programme.
The Prime Minister also interacted with the peacekeepers at various places across the globe through video conference.
At the beginning of the programme, one minute silence was observed to show respect to the peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives for establishing peace across the globe.
A short video documentary on Bangladesh's peacekeeping missions across the globe was played at the programme.

Dhaka to host World Peace Conference in November
Bangladesh will host a two-day world peace conference in November this year, marking the ongoing birth centenary celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as part of promoting a culture of peace and tolerance.
Bangabandhu Peace Award will be introduced and conferred during the conference.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said this while addressing a discussion at Foreign Service Academy, marking the anniversary of Bangabandhu's Joliot Curie Peace Prize given in recognition of his contributions to world peace.

The Father of the Nation, who was a proponent of peace and addressing problems with dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful resolution of conflicts, was awarded the medal on May 23, 1973. It was the first international award to the newly-independent Bangladesh.
PM greets cricketers for winning 1st match against Sri Lanka
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday congratulated the national cricket team on winning the first match in the three-match ODI home series against Sri Lanka by 33 runs.

In a message, the Prime Minister greeted all the players, the coach and the officials of the national cricket team as well as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials concerned for beating Sri Lanka in the match.
PM to inaugurate 140 cyclone and flood centres on Sunday, says minister
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate virtually 140 cyclone and flood shelters besides laying foundation of 50 Mujib Killas across the country on Sunday, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Mohammad Enamur Rahman has said.
Also on Sunday 30 district relief and disaster management information centres and five Mujib Killas will also be inaugurated by the prime minister, Dr. Enamur told a press briefing on Saturday.
Besides, construction, renovation, and development activities of 550 Mujib Killas’ are underway in 148 coastal and flood-hit Upazilas, according to the minister.

It's very regrettable; nothing to hide: FM about Rozina issue
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Thursday said it is very regrettable what happened to journalist Rozina Islam and there is nothing to hide by the government.
He said they will have to face the international community for the behaviour of a few people.
"It's very regrettable. The government of Sheikh Hasina is a media-friendly one. We’ve nothing to hide. I know, as Foreign Ministry, we’ve to face it. Many will raise questions. We don't want such incidents," Dr Momen said, adding that "you (questioner) may be right" that few people bring bad fame for the government.
The Foreign Minister made the remarks when his comment was sought on the issue of Rozina Islam after his meeting with South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Lee Jang-keun at State guesthouse Padma.

Dr Momen appreciated the role of the media in unearthing many stories, including the pillow saga and Shahed Karim issues.
"The government has taken action (after those stories were published). You (media) help the government. You’re part of the government. You’re helping us (govt) much. We thank you," he said.
Dr Momen referred to what ruling Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said on Wednesday and appreciated his remarks.
Hanif said the incident that took place at the Secretariat with journalist Rozina Islam was undesirable and that the country would have benefited if strict action had been taken against the corrupt instead of filing cases against journalists.
Covid-19 death: PM donates Tk25 lakh to DS Maruf's family
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday donated Tk25 lakh as financial assistance to the family of a deputy secretary who died from Covid-19 recently.
PMO Secretary Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah handed over two separate family savings certificates to Fatema Naharin Nira, wife of late deputy secretary Abul Khair Md Maruf Hasan, on behalf of the prime minister.
Nira received one certificate – equivalent to Tk20 lakh – in her name and another of Tk5 lakh in the name of Maruf Hasan's mother Mahfuza Akter Banu.
Maruf, who was deputy secretary at the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, breathed his last on April 15 at the age of 48. He left behind his wife, two children and elderly mother.
FBCCI donates Tk 8cr to Prime Minister’s two funds
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI), the country's apex business organisation, has donated Tk 5 crore to the Prime Minister's assistance fund and Tk 3 crore to the Private Housing Fund as part of the government's initiative to help people affected by coronavirus.
FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim handed over the two pay orders at the PM's office on Tuesday afternoon. On behalf of the Prime Minister, his principal secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus received the pay orders.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested everyone to come forward to tackle the epidemic. The FBCCI has come forward to respond to the call of the Prime Minister.
FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's provision of housing to the homeless is a timely and commendable initiative. Offering houses to the homeless and landless is the biggest festival for the people of Bangladesh in Mujib Year.

Hasina’s homecoming brought country back from darkness: Radwan Mujib
Reminiscing the homecoming of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina 40 years back, her nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq on Monday paid tributes to this historical moment, saying that she ‘turned Bangladesh away from the darkness’ on this day.
"Forty years ago, today, you turned Bangladesh away from the darkness, and shone your light on the path towards democracy, development, and a decent life for its people. There's still a long way to go, but none of it would have been possible without your return. Thank you," grandson of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wrote on his official Facebook page.
His words were accompanied by the time-travelled image of a 40-year-old poster on her return at the airport at 3:00 pm on May 17, 1981.
The historical day marked the end of the six years of agonising wait by Sheikh Hasina, a survivor of the assassinated family, to return to the country.

All the ordeals, encountered by her and her sister Sheikh Rehana, set in on August 15, 1975, when the news crossed oceans to them that their entire family had been gunned down by some disgruntled army officers at their residence in Bangladesh.
Her struggle in these six years was portrayed in detail by the globally acclaimed docufiction, ‘Hasina: A Daughter's Tale’, co-produced by Radwan.
The 70-minute docudrama captures a brief history of the tumultuous path the country has traversed through the first account narrative of two sisters.
Radwan is a trustee of Centre for Research and information, a not-for-profit think-tank that has taken up efforts to present history with a captivating style of storytelling for the younger generation.
Another initiative, Mujib graphic novel, under CRI, the first-ever graphic novel on a towering figure in the country, has reportedly captivated the kids with the life and work on Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, based on his autobiography.
