Pant and Pandya star as India wins ODI series vs. England
Hardik Pandya’s all-round brilliance and Rishabh Pant’s 125 not out off 113 balls carried India to a five-wicket win in the one-day international series decider against England on Sunday.
India won the series 2-1.
Pandya dismissed Jason Roy and Ben Stokes in an outstanding opening burst in the third and final ODI before returning to take the wickets of Liam Livingstone and Jos Buttler in the same over to finish with an ODI-best 4-24.
“For the team this win means a lot,” Pandya said.
Buttler top-scored with 60 off 80 balls in England’s 259 all out in 45.5 overs, but that was put in the shade by Pandya's 71 off 55 deliveries in a decisive 133-run stand for the fifth wicket with Pant at Old Trafford.
While pacer Reece Topley (3-35) followed up his England record 6-24 on Thursday with the prize wickets of Rohit Sharma (17), Shikhar Dhawan (1) and Virat Kohli (17), Pant and Pandya expertly led the recovery after India appeared in real trouble at 72-4.
The pair offered chances but grew in confidence with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius.
Pandya departed with 55 required but Pant’s unbeaten ton — with 16 fours and two sixes — got India over the line with some 7.5 overs to spare.

A carnival-style atmosphere greeted Pant’s first ODI century, in which he accelerated after going past 50. He mixed orthodox strokes to give England a lesson after it failed to bat out its 50 overs for the third time in the series.
After being asked to bat first, Roy settled with an authoritative punch, the first of three fours in Mohammed Shami’s opening over. But if an unchanged England was relieved at Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, it was quickly put into perspective as his replacement Mohammed Siraj exploited some early movement to find the edges of Jonny Bairstow and then Joe Root, both for three-ball ducks.
Roy continued to assert himself and Stokes was bullish but Pandya put the brakes on. Roy skied a top edge to depart for 41, while a charging Stokes got in a tangle after Pandya dragged his length back and offered a return catch on 27.
David Willey (18) and Craig Overton (32) made useful contributions down the order and, though 25 balls went unused in England’s innings, the hosts' hopes grew as Topley picked up where he left off at Lord’s.
Dhawan’s bat turned in his hands as he skewed to backward point, Rohit nibbled at a delivery angling away from him, as did Kohli, whose luckless run across formats was extended after another low score.
Suryakumar Yadav nicked off to Overton, who then strayed too far in-field from fine leg and watched Pandya’s pull bounce inside the rope, just after Pant had been reprieved on 18. Advancing to Moeen Ali, Pant was beaten by lavish turn, but Buttler failed to take the stumping chance.
They were costly misses, with the India pair unfurling some glorious drives down the ground against England’s rotating cast of bowlers.
Hardik reached a 43-ball fifty first before Pant got to his off 71 deliveries.
Neither batter took any undue risks and it was only when Pant was in his 70s that he thumped Overton for India’s first six. England at least claimed Pandya as Stokes took a sensational low catch diving forward from midwicket.
After reaching his 106-ball ton — his second fifty came off just 35 deliveries — Pant was in no mood to hang around. Willey disappeared to all parts as he conceded five fours in as many balls before Pant ended proceedings with a reverse sweep for four off Root.
Buttler said he was still “a young captain” and needed more time.
“I feel like a really experienced cricketer, but in terms of captaincy I’m quite a young captain with lots of opportunity to grow and learn about the role,” Buttler said. “I think it will take a bit of time, I want to try and walk before I can run, I’ve just got to work out, be myself and use the people around me to help me."
India won the first ODI at the Oval by 10 wickets before England responded with a 100-run victory at Lord's in the second match.
Shadab gives Pakistan ODI series sweep against West Indies
Shadab Khan’s brilliant all-round performance led Pakistan to a 53-run win over West Indies in the third one-day international on Sunday and a 3-0 series sweep.
Shadab’s career-best 86 off 78 balls revived Pakistan to 269-9 after the hosts chose to bat first and their top order stumbled against the surprise off-spin of Nicholas Pooran, who finished with 4-48 in 10 overs.

West Indies' own struggle against spin continued as its middle order again capitulated against Shadab (4-62) and Mohammad Nawaz (2-56). The visitors were bowled out for 216 in 37.2 overs, losing by 53 runs under the DLS method. A dust storm in Multan suspended play for an hour during Pakistan’s innings and the match was reduced to 48 overs a side.
No. 7 batter Akeal Hosein smashed six sixes and two fours to top-score for West Indies with 60 off 37 balls before he was undone by Shadab’s sharp delivery and stumped.
“We executed our plans and got the desired results,” Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said. “We are trying different combinations with bat and ball. We will try to keep continuity and also test our bench strength.”
Thanks to Pooran, Pakistan had slipped to 117-5 halfway through its innings despite a good start. Imam-ul-Haq (62), who hit his seventh-straight ODI half century, added 85 runs for the first wicket with Fakhar Zaman (35).
But Pooran, who had bowled just three balls in previous ODIs, stunned Pakistan with his bounce and sharp spin.
Pooran had Zaman clean bowled in his third over and leg-spinner Hayden Walsh followed it up by successfully going for a leg-before-wicket referral against Azam, who was out for a rare single-digit score of 1.
Pooran then enjoyed the quick wickets of Imam, Mohammad Haris (0) and Mohammad Rizwan (11) before Shadab revived the innings with a gritty 84-run stand with Khushdil Shah, who made 34.
Shadab looked set for his first ODI hundred before he was clean bowled by Jayden Seales off a perfect yorker in the last over.
Pakistan's Shahnawaz Dahani, who made his ODI debut after Shaheen Shah Afridi was rested for the final game, didn't have to wait long to get his first wicket when West Indies started the chase. Kyle Mayers (5) was brilliantly caught low at point by Imam in Dahani's second over as West Indies also struggled against the pace of Mohammad Wasim (1-21).
The introduction of spin unsettled the middle-order batters with Pooran holing out in the deep for 11 while going for a big shot against left-arm spinner Nawaz.
Hosein gave West Indies a glimmer of hope when he added 49 runs for the eighth wicket with Romario Shepherd (16) before Shadab struck in successive overs and Hasan Ali (2-29) claimed the last wicket of Shepherd.

“The last two games were disappointing for us,” Pooran said, referring to West Indies’ 120-run loss on Friday in the second ODI. “We played poorly with the bat. We did well as a team and going forward that will be the template.”
The series win lifted Pakistan to No. 4 on the points table — immediately above West Indies — in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. The top eight teams will directly qualify for next year’s World Cup in India.
The ODI series was postponed last year when West Indies flew back home after a COVID-19 outbreak in the visitors’ camp during the preceding T20 series in Pakistan.

In the day's match, Bangladesh posted 194 for nine after choosing to bat first.
In a must-win second ODI game, South Africa chased down the target in 37.2 overs, with Quinton de Kock (62) and Kyle Verreynne (58*) killing Bangladesh's hopes.
For the Tigers, Mehidy Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain picked up one wicket each.
Earlier, the Tigers had almost lost the match in the first 12.4 overs as half of them were in the dugout with just 34 runs on the scorecard.
The disciplined South Africa bowling unit did not really allow the Bangladesh batters to settle. Tamim, Shakib and Yasir fell for 1, 0 and 2.
In the sixth wicket stand, Mahmudullah Riyad and Afif Hossain added 60 runs. Tabraiz Shamsi broke the partnership, with Mahmudullah perishing on 25.
On the seventh wicket, Afif and Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 86 runs.
Afif's 72 gave the Tigers some hope, but a target of 195 was never really going to be enough to rattle the superb batting line-up of the Proteas.

For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada bagged five wickets, conceding 39 in 10 overs.
Bangladesh won the first match of the series by 38 runs, which was their first win against the hosts on their soil.
“Underdogs” Bangladesh aim to create history in South Africa
Bangladesh are all set to start their ODI series against South Africa from March 18.
Ahead of the series, Russell Domingo, the head coach of Bangladesh, has said that given their past in South Africa, the Tigers are underdogs in this series.
Before this series, Bangladesh took on the Proteas in 19 matches in South Africa and failed to win any of those matches in all the formats of cricket. Overall, Bangladesh played 40 international matches against South Africa and won four matches.

“South Africa have just beaten India 3-0. We will definitely come as underdogs, having no win here before. But we are confident in our one day side and playing good one day cricket for a long period of time. The players understand their roles and what it takes, so we are expecting a competitive series,” Domingo told on Wednesday.
“South Africa will definitely start as favourites. They are in their home conditions and have a tough side to beat in South Africa. They are favourites but it suites us to be underdogs, gives us an opportunity to do something special,” he added.
Bangladesh will get the service of Shakib Al Hasan in this series. The allrounder was uncertain to take part in this tour due to mental fatigue what heearlier said. The Bangladesh coach said Shakib brings balance to the team with his experience.
“He balances our team. It’s always difficult when he is not there. You are not sure whether to pick an extra bowler or an extra batter. It is great to have playe of that caliber and experience. He has been here before. His energy, attitude and work ethic has been fantastic, so good to have him here,” Domingo said.

Over the last few years, Bangladesh became a good force in ODI cricket. Bangladesh coach said the trend of doing well in ODIs would put the Tigers in a better position than the other formats.
Ahead of the series, Bangladesh’s main concern is the form of the seniors. Especially, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib who were out of form in the last few matches. But Domingo said he doesn't like a player being a senior or junior, he rather put the onus on everyone’s shoulder.
“For me, there are no seniors or juniors. I know you talk about that aspect but for me, they are 11 players. A lot is said about seniors and juniors and for me it is unnecessary,” the Bangladesh coach added.
Bangladesh look to continue their dominance over Afghanistan
After winning the first two matches of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, the Bangladesh cricket team is looking to continue their dominance.
The third and final match of the series is all set to be played in Chattogram on Monday at 11 am.
In the first match of the series, Bangladesh won riding on the outstanding partnership between Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Despite losing six wickets in under 50 runs, Bangladesh chased down a target of 216, which came as a big surprise to the fans.
And, in the second match, Bangladesh batted first and posted a total exceeding the 300-run mark as Liton Das hit his fifth ODI ton and Mushfiuqr Rahim partnered him in a wonderful stand.
With the two consecutive wins in the first two matches, Bangladesh went to the top of the table of the World Cup Super League. And if the Tigers manage to win the last match as well, their place at the top of the table will be strengthened more.

“It’s more important to have 10 more points than winning the series,” Mehidy told the media ahead of the third match. “We know that the top-eight teams will qualify to the World Cup directly. So it will help us a lot if we can secure 10 more points in the last match of the series.”
Only a few players have joined the optional practice on Sunday, which has indicated that the Bangladesh team is happy after winning the first two matches and the series. But Mehidy said that the team is as hungry for the win as they were ahead of the first match.
After the ODI series, both teams will lock their horns in the two-match T20 series in Dhaka.
Bangladesh team is scheduled to tour South Africa for a three-match ODI and two-match Test series after the ongoing home series. The players who could be in the Test team for the South Africa tour are having a camp in Bagura under the name of Bangladesh Tigers— a development program introduced recently by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
