Six killed as truck overturns in Madaripur
Six people were killed and two others injured when a truck overturned near Arial Kha Bridge toll plaza in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district on Saturday night.
Two of the deceased were identified as Sohan Hossain, 26 and Pulok Hossain, 25, of Sadar upazila while the identities of the others could not be known yet.

Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Shibchar Highway Police said, the accident occurred around 9 pm when the truck loaded with construction materials turned turtle after hitting the railing of the bridge, leaving three dead the spot.
Of the injured, one died at a local hospital while two others died at Faridpur Medical College and Hospital.
Balanced development: Govt creates 3 new upazilas in 3 districts
The government on Monday approved the creation of three new upazilas -- ‘Eidgaon’ in Cox’s Bazar, ‘Modhyanagar’ in Sunamganj and ‘Dashar’ in Madaripur -- raising the number of the upazilas to 495 in the country in a bid to ensure balanced development in those remote areas.
The approval came from a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reform (NICAR), held virtually. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting, joining it from Ganobhaban, while others from the Secretariat.
“The structures of the three new upazilas will be like that of the latest upazila (492nd Upazila),” said Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam while briefing reporters after the meetings of the Cabinet and NICAR.
Besides, Dakkhin Sunamganj upazila was renamed as ‘Shantiganj Upazila’, he said.

3 killed by lightning strike in Magura, Madaripur, Khulna
Three people were killed by the lightning in separate incidents in Magura, Khulna and Madaripur districts on Sunday.

In Magura, Sakiron Nesa, 50, wife of Surman Sheikh of Ghullia village in Mohammadpur upazila of the district, was killed when a thunderbolt struck her while she was working at her house on Sunday evening, said Tarok Nath Biswash, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station.
In Khulna, a man was killed by lightning amid heavy rain while he was returning home after catching fish around 10 pm on Sunday at Bunarabbad village in Batiaghata upazila, said Runa Laila, a member of Surkhali Union.
The deceased was identified as Samir Roy, 35, son of Motilal Roy.

In Madaripur, a housewife was killed when a thunderbolt struck her while working in her peanut field on Sunday evening at Balughat village in Shibchar upazila of the district, said Miraz Hossain, officer-in-charge of Madaripur Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Ayesha Begum, 50, wife of Sorfan Hawladar.
Besides, at least nine people were killed and two others sustained injuries from lightning strikes in Chattogram, Feni, Manikganj and Magura districts on Sunday.

Lightning strikes claim hundreds of lives in Bangladesh every year. The deaths mostly occur in the warmer period of the year from April to June, as hailstorms occur most frequently during this time.
Speedboat accident in Padma: Owners among 4 sued
A case has been filed against four people including owners of the speedboat, in connection with the speedboat capsize in the Padma River that claimed 26 lives in Madaripur's Shibchar upazila on Monday.
Sub-inspector of Char Janajat River Police Lokman Hossain filed the case at 12:30 am, said Miraz Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shibchar Police Station, Tuesday.
Apart from speedboat owners Chandu Mia and Jahirul Islam, its driver Shah Alam and leaseholder of the Shimulia ghat Shah Alam have been made accused in the case.
OC Miraz Hossain said none of the four accused has been arrested yet.

“The speedboat driver is now taking treatment under police custody as he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from Faridpur Medical College in critical condition,” said the OC.
Inspector of Char Janajat river police check post, Abdul Rajjak said efforts are continuing to arrest all the accused.
Earlier, on Monday, at least 26 people died when the Banglabazar-bound speedboat from Shimulia ferry ghat capsized in the river after a collision with a sand-laden bulk carrier near Kathalbari ferry ghat in Shibchar.
Twenty-six bodies were retrieved from the river with the help of divers from local Fire Service and Civil Defence, police and Coast Guard members.

Four persons have been booked in connection with the speedboat accident in the Padma river that claimed 26 lives in Madaripur's Shibchar upazila on Monday, police said Tuesday.
Miraz Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shibchar Police Station, said an FIR was filed against the four, including the speedboat owner, on a complaint lodged by the sub-inspector of River Police, Lokman, on Monday night.

On information, fire service divers from Shibchar and Jajira fire stations rushed to the spot and conducted the rescue operation.

1 killed, 2 injured as chemical drum explodes in Madaripur
A construction worker died when a chemical drum exploded at Rajoir Upazila in Madaripur on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Emon Munshi (22).
Two others were seriously injured in the same incident.

According to police and local sources, some workers started work on a three-storey under construction building on Saturday morning. Around noon, Emon and his associates tried to open the mouth of an old chemical drum on the roof of the building with an iron device, which caused a sudden explosion. Emon died on the spot.

Two other workers, Enamul Munshi (19) and Zahirul Islam (29) were seriously injured.
