DB questioning: The eccentric businessman and the fake addl secretary
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan police (DMP) on Tuesday evening interrogated the chairman and chief executive officer of DATCO Group Musa bin Shamser for his alleged involvement with the arrested fake additional secretary Abdul Quader Chowdhury.
Musa along with his family went to the DB office in the afternoon and he was interrogated for more than three hours.
Briefing reporters afterwards, its Joint Commissioner (DB-North)Harun-ur- Rashid said that businessman Musa Bin Shamsher cannot avoid responsibility for the offences of fraudster Abdul Quader.
He allegedly appointed Quader as his legal adviser and also gave him a cheque of Tk 20 crore. Evidence of Abdul Quader's frequent contact with him has been found, he said.

Six detectives rob bizman of 20 gold bars in Feni, held
Six sleuths of the detective branch of Feni police were arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly robbing a businessman of 20 gold bars worth Tk 1.24 crore.
Some 15 of the 20 looted gold bars have been recovered from the possession of the accused, police said on Wednesday.

Those arrested have been identified as detective branch officer-in-charge Saiful Islam, three sub-inspectors -- Motaher Hossain, Mizanur Rahman and Nurul Haque -- and two assistant sub-inspectors, Avijit Barua and Masud Rana.
Khandaker Nurunnabi, superintendent of Feni police, said the arrests were made in the wake of a complaint against them by businessman Gopal Kanti Das.
As per the complaint, the six detectives intercepted Gopal's car on the road under Fatehpur flyover on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway while he was on his way to Dhaka with 20 gold bars on August 8.

Later, the accused sleuths looted the gold bars from Gopal and left the spot.
On Tuesday, Gopal approached the SP of Feni police and a subsequent investigation found the six policemen prima facie guilty of robbery. They were arrested around 11.30pm.
A robbery case has been filed against the six at the Feni model police station.
DB busts counterfeit drugs syndicate; 5 arrested
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Detective Branch of Gulshan zone on Monday arrested five people, including a woman, in connection with manufacturing counterfeit drugs under a US-China brand.
The arrestees are Lubna Akhter, Anwar Kazi, Ram Chandra Basak, SM Tajmul Tariq and Kanak Kumar Shaha.
Acting on secret tips, the DB ran a series of raids at the capital's Hatirpul, Rampura and Malibagh area today, said a media release.
During the raids huge numbers of various unlicensed tablets and capsules made in unauthorized factories of Narayanganj’s Jalakuri were recovered from the arrestees.

During the preliminary interrogation, the arrestees confessed collecting plastic bottles, caps and silicone from the Chawkbazar-Midford area and printing colourful English stickers and labels from local press services, before they could send the drugs to market.
The preliminary inquiries also revealed that some doctors were prescribing those counterfeit and adulterated drugs to patients.
A syndicate of wholesalers in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Cox's Bazar, Manikganj used to market those using college-going girls, the media release also said.
During the raids counterfeit drugs and medicine including Motive Xtra and J- Plus, labeled as Made in USA and Desire S Aksim Lab Bangladesh were recovered.
The team also recovered Issy R Omega3, Cibacal D, Neogel MaxTM, NeixitTM, OrcalTM, OrkidTM, ImpaleTM and Procare Probiotic4, labeled as made in Guangzhou, China.

Legal action was being taken against the arrestees and efforts were being made to arrest the members of the syndicate.
DB nabs gang of motorcycle thieves
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested eight alleged members of an organized motorcycle thieves' gang by conducting special drives in different places of the capital Dhaka and Comilla district.
The detectives also recovered 17 stolen motorcycles of different brands from their possession during the simultaneous drives.
The arrested gangsters were identified as Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Md Rubel, Md. Sagar Mia alias Bhsani, Md. Babu, Md. Afzal Hossain, Md. Rashedul Islam alias Russel, Md. Faruk Hossain and Md. Helal Hossain.

Sources at the DB said, the DB (Lalbagh Division) had information that some members of a vehicle thieves' gang were gathered at Madhubagh area of Hatirjheel to buy and sell stolen motorcycles. Based on the information, a special DB team carried out a drive on the location at around 5:45 pm on June 8 and arrested Abul Kalam, Rubel, Sagar, Babu, Afzal and Rashedul.
Five stolen motorcycles were recovered from their possessions during the time, said Assistant Commissioner (DB-Lalbagh Division) Madhusudan Das.
Then based on information extracted from the arrestees, the detectives conducted simultaneous drives and arrested Farooq and Helal from Muzaffarganj area of Comilla district. This time they recovered 12 more stolen motorcycles from their possession, he said.

During the preliminary interrogation, the arrested gangsters confessed that they are members of a syndicate trading in stolen motorcycles. They took the stolen motorcycles by driving themselves to Hajiganj and Shahrasti areas of Chandpur district. Later, the arrested Farooq, the leader of the gang, changed the shape of the stolen motorcycles and then sold them on in different areas of Chandpur, Noakhali and Comilla districts.
All eight were shown arrested in a case filed with Hatirjheel police station.
DB to investigate case against Rozina
The case filed against Prothom Alo journalist Rozina Islam has been transferred to the Detective Branch of police.
Harunur Rashid, additional deputy commissioner (Ramna zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Wednesday said the case was transferred to the DB.
Rozina Islam was handed over to police on Monday night after being held at the Secretariat for over five hours.

Rozina was arrested for allegedly attempting to illegally “collect sensitive government documents and taking photos of them” from the Secretariat on Monday.
An FIR was filed against Rozina under the Official Secrets Act and sections 379 and 411 of The Penal Code on a complaint filed by the Health Services Division at Shahbagh police station.
Later, a Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Rozina, to jail after rejecting the police's demand for her five-day remand.
Rozina Islam was taken to Kashimpur Central Women's Jail on Tuesday afternoon.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formed a three-member probe committee to look into the confinement and later handover to police of journalist Rozina Islam at the Secretariat on Monday.
Earlier in the day, Journalists formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding unconditional release of journalist Rozina Islam and punishment of those involved in harassing her at the Secretariat.

Dhaka Reporters Unity, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalist, Barishal Divisional Journalist Association, Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum, Bangladesh Photo Journalists Association and other organizations joined the human chain around 11 am.
They also demanded withdrawal of false case filed against Rozina.
Besides, Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) held a protest rally in front of its office demanding the same.
4 held with 44,000 yaba pills in Dhaka
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday arrested four members of a narcotics ring with 44,000 pieces of contraband yaba pills from the capital's Khilgaon.
The arrestees were identified as Md Sujon, 30, Md Mosharaf Hossain, 40, Md Ashraf Ali, 26, and Md Jahirul Islam, 31.

Policemen nabbed the four from the Banashree area during a drive and also seized a truck, used for carrying narcotics, from them, said Assistant Commissioner of DB Madhusudan Das.
"A case has been filed with Khilgaon Police Station in connection with the incident," he added.

"The arrestees would transport yaba pills to Dhaka from Cox's Bazar in a special chamber created on the roof of the driving seat of the truck," Madhusudan said.
