Man held with 12.5 kg gold in Jhenaidah
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Friday held a suspected gold smuggler along with 99 gold bars, weighing 12.5 kg from Hatir Mor area of Maheshpur upazila in Jhenaidah district.
The suspect has been named as Ibrahim Khalil, son of Abdul Latif of Jagusa village in the upazila.

Tipped off, a team of BGB-58 conducted a drive and nabbed Khalil along with the gold bars, said Lieutenant Colonel Shahin Azad, director of BGB-58 in a press briefing on Friday noon.
Process is underway to take legal action against the detainee, he added.
Youth beaten dead by rivals in Jhenaidah
A youth was beaten to death by rivals over establishing dominance in their area at Awdha village in Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Kallol Hossain, 32, son of Akbar Khondokar of Baroda village in Bogura union of the upazila.
Rafiq Hossain, a neighbor of Kollol, said a feud was ongoing between the supporters of Anu Bishwash and Moka Bishwash in the area.
On Saturday, while farming in their onion field, some men of the rival group with hammer and sharp weapons attacked Anu Bishwas’s supporter Kollol from behind, said witness Rafiq Hossain.
He was taken to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex after rescue where the duty doctor announced him dead.

Dr Shahnewaz Ibne Kashim, Medical Officer of the health complex, said the boy had several injury marks on his body and might have died from excessive bleeding.
Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa police station, said police forces have been deployed in the area to avoid any further clash.
Efforts are on to detain the accused in the incident, said the OC.
20-yr-old found dead in Jhenaidah
A 20-year-old youth was found dead in Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenaidah district on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Riad Khan, 20, son of Solaiman Amin of Bagdanga village. Riad used to work at a rice mill.

Local people spotted the body of Riad in the afternoon and alerted cops, said Moinuddin, officer-in-charge of Kotchandpur Police Station.
"The body bore several injury marks. We suspect he was stabbed to death by miscreants on Tuesday night," he added.
The body was sent to the local hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Jhenaidah’s Ritu becomes first transgender UP chairman in Bangladesh
Nazrul Islam Ritu, an independent candidate, was elected as the first transgender Union Parishad chairman at Trilochonpur union of Jhenaidah’s Kaliganj upazila during the 3rd phase UP elections on Sunday.
Ritu, 43, was elected as a chairman of the union bagging 9,557 votes with pineapple symbol while Awami League-backed candidate Nazrul Islam Sana, got 4,529 votes, said Md Abdus Salek, district election officer.

Ritu had to leave her village and move to Dhaka’s Demra at the age of five. However, she frequently visits Jhenaidah to stay connected with Trilochanpur people.
Locals said Ritu has been providing financial assistance to the helpless people of different villages of Trilochanpur Union for the 15 years and thus she became popular among local people.
Talking to UNB, Ritu said, "I have won the election as a transgender person. Now, I want to serve the people of my union for the rest of my life."
She said the government has given the right to vote and various opportunities to the transgender community members. “I have no regret for being a transgender person.”
“The AL-backed candidate and his supporters obstructed me in many ways. However, there has been a fair election because of the administration,” she added.
Earlier, another transgender, Pinki Khatun, was elected vice chairman of Kotchandpur upazila in Jhenaidah.

On November 13, Shahida Begum became the first transgender person to get elected as member of Maguraghona Union Parishad-6 in Khulna district.
A guideline was approved in 2013 at cabinet committee for granting Hijra or transgenders state recognition. Following that, in January, 2014, government issued a gazette granting state recognition to the transgender community.
In 2019, the Election Commission decided to enlist third gender as a gender identity in the voter list along with male and female.
Farmer hacked to death in Jhenaidah
A farmer was hacked to death by some miscreants at Digharpara village in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah district in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Rezaul Islam,38, son of Abul Kashem from the Digharpara village.
According to locals, they rushed to the yard of Rezaul’s house around 3:30 am hearing screams and found him lying in a pool of blood.

Later he was sent to Jashore Sadar Hospital where doctors announced him dead, they said.
Rezaul’s son Apon Islam said he woke up hearing screams of his parents and peeped through the window only to see some people hitting his father.
Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj police station Md Mahfuzur Rahman Mia said the motive behind the murder will be known after investigation.

Diarrhea outbreak afflicts 160 people in Jhenaidah
As many as 160 people have been admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital hospitalised after being afflicted with diarrhea in past two days, hospital sources said on Friday.
Of them, 110 patients are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. The worst affected areas are Hamdoh, Kanchanpur and Mollapara of the district.
Authorities are struggling to prove hospital beds as the number of patients has witnessed a sudden jump, the sources added.

Jewel of Alhera Para in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila said three members of his family have been taken to hospital with diarrhea.
Sonali, a resident of Khandakar Para, her daughter has also been down with the water-borne disease, followed by her husband.
Residential Medical Officer of Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital Dr Tapas Kumar said the affected are mostly elderly people.

He said shortage of doctors and nurses are hampering treatment of patients.
Hospital superintendent Dr Harunur Rashid, however, said the patients are getting proper treatment as the hospital has no problem with medicines.
The situation will soon come under control, he said.
8 get life term for killing Jubo League leader in Jhenaidah
A Jhenaidah court on Monday sentenced eight people to life term imprisonment for killing a Jubo League leader in 2010.
The convicts are—Shanti Hossain, Abdul Karim, Lavlu, Abu Zahid Moni, Mizanur Rahman alias Tak Mizan, Ibrahim Khalil alias Idris alias Idu, Mukul and Nasir.

The court also fined them Tk 5,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more igorous imprisonment.
The court also sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
According to the prosecution, the convicts hurled bomb towards Zakir Hossain Mandal Shanti, convener of then Ganna union unit Jubo League, when he was returning home at Kashimnagar village in Sadar upazila by a motorbike on July 7, 2010, leaving him injured.
Later, he succumbed to his injures in a hospital in Dhaka on July 11.

Two separate cases were filed in this connection.
Police submitted chargesheet against eleven people.
After examining records and 19 witnesses, Additional Session Judge Shawkat Hossain handed down the verdict.
31 detained for trying to sneak into India
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Monday detained as many as 31 people, including women and children, while they were allegedly trying to sneak into India via the Jhenaidah border.
All the detainees are Bangladeshi citizens, and they have been handed over to local police, the BGB said on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from BGB's Maheshpur-58 Battalion raided several villages in Maheshpur along the land border with India and detained the 31 people, the force said in a release.
Among the 31, two persons were detained in Ekashipara village, three in Matila, 10 in Kanchanpur and eight each in Karimpur Bazar and Islami Bank area of Jibonnagar.

5 detained for trying to sneak into India
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday detained five Bangladeshis -- three women and two children -- in Jhenaidah's Bakoshpota village while they were allegedly trying to sneak into India.

The five have been handed over to the local police, officials said on Friday. In fact, since January this year, the border guards have detained a total of 928 people for trying to illegally enter the neighbouring country.
The five detained by the BGB in Maheshpur upazila's Bakoshpota village have been identified as 65-year-old Fulmati Shil, 32-year-old Mita Shil and her nine-year-old son Joy, all residents of Satkhira’s Lautara village, and Banani Mondol, 27, and her son Deb, 8, of Purbo Jhiler Danga village.

According to the BGB, attempts to illegal crossover to India have not stopped despite the closure of the international border in view of the worsening Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh.
Bangladeshis easily sneaking into India can be attributed to a fence-less, porous land border, officials said.

At least 10 people were killed and 30 others injured in a road accident at Barobazar area in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah on Wednesday.
