Man held with gold worth Tk 4.5cr along Lalmonirhat border
Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) claimed to have detained a person with 45 gold bars along the India border in the district on Tuesday.
Md Azizur Rahman, 58, is from Durgapur village under Aditmari upazila in the district, according to a press release signed by BGB-15 Commandant Lieutenant Colonel Mofazzal Hossain Akanda.
The battalion received a tip that a big consignment of gold was going to be smuggled to India through Kutichar border area under the Aditmari upazila.
As per the information, BGB men took up positions along the border and eventually challenged a person heading towards the border. But instead of cooperating, this man, who would turn out to be Azizur, tried to run away, and BGB gave chase.

The BGB personnel eventually detained Azizur and recovered the gold weighing around 5.249 kilograms from his body. The market value of the gold is estimated to be around Tk 4.5 crore. The gold bars were wrapped with cloth and tape.
Later, the detainee was handed over to the concerned police station where a process was underway to file a case in this connection, the BGB release added.

Freedom fighter in Lalmonirhat murdered
Former principal of Patgram Women’s Degree College was murdered at Shahebdanga in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district on Friday (January 20, 2023) night.
The deceased was identified as M Wajed Ali, a freedom fighter and son of Basir Uddin of the village.
Quoting locals, Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of Patgram Police Station, said a group of miscreants swooped on Wajed at his house around 9:30 pm and slit his throat, leaving him critically injured.

Wajed was taken to the upazila health complex where the doctors declared him dead.
The motive behind the murder could not be known immediately.
“Police are investigating the incident and legal steps will be taken soon,” said OC.

A 26-year-old woman and her six-year-old daughter were crushed to death on rail tracks in Lalmonirhat's Patgram Friday morning, police said.
Also, the accident left her two-year-old son critically injured.
The dead were identified as Sumi Begum and her daughter Tasmira Tabassum Tasin from Dhabalsuti Rahmanpur village of Patgram.
A Burimari land port-bound train ran them over as they were crossing the Burimari-Patgram railway tracks in the Ghunti area around 10am, Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of Patgram Police Station, said. "The mother and her daughter died on the spot."

The bodies were sent to the district's Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies, Faruk said.
Sumi's son is now undergoing treatment at the hospital, he added.
Cattle trader shot dead ‘by BSF’ along Lalmonirhat border
A Bangladeshi cattle trader was shot dead allegedly by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) members along Burimari border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Bipul Hossain 23, of the upazila.
According to locals, a group of cattle traders including Bipul tried to bring Indian cows through Patgram border in the early hours of Sunday.

Bipul sustained bullet when BSF opened fire at them, Omar Faruq, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patgram police station.
He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, he added.

3 JMB men get life imprisonment in arms case in Lalmonirhat
A Lalmonirhat tribunal on Monday sentenced three members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life imprisonment and another one to 14 years imprisonment in an arms case.
Lalmonirhat Special Tribunal Judge Mizanur Rahman handed down the punishment.
The lifers are identified as Shafiqul Islam, son of Nazrul islam, Apel Misti, son of Lutfur Rahman and Mokhlesur Rahman, son of Hafizur Rahman of Kaliganj upazila.

The man who got 14 years in jail is identified as Tafizul Islam, son of Mojibur Rahman of Patgram upazila.
According to the prosecution, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 arrested four JMB men while they were holding a clandestine meeting on August 2, 2018.
The elite force also seized arms and bullets from their possession.

Two Indians held with smuggled drugs in Lalmonirhat
Two Indian nationals have been apprehended with smuggled drugs near the international border in Lalmonirhat, police said on Friday.
The arrestees have been identified as Hossain Ali and Jahangir Alam, said Shaha Alam, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha police station.
The accused were arrested on Thursday night from near the Gendukuri border of Tongbhanga union in Hatibandha upazila during a drive, said the OC.

"Some 100 bottles of phensedyl have been seized from their possession," he said.
The arrestees were booked and produced in a court that sent them to judicial custody, OC Shaha said.

People living in fear as Teesta flowing above danger level in Lalmonirhat
The residents along the Teesta River are passing their days in fear of possible flood as the Teesta River was flowing above its danger level on Monday.
The Teesta River was flowing 25 cm above its danger level around 6 pm on Monday due to onrush of water from the upstream, creating panic among the local residents.

Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, Nilphamari Dalia Division, Md Asafuddoulla said the char areas along the Teesta river have been inundated due to the rise in water level.

Floating bridge built by school teacher ends suffering of Lalmonirhat villagers
Ibrahim Ali, 45, the headmaster of Shalmara Ghonapara government primary school, has set a unique example by constructing a 50-foot-long floating bridge on the Sati River with drums and bamboo at Chandrapur union in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat.
Thanks to Ibrahim Ali’s initiative, around 15,000 villagers, including students, are now able to cross the river using the bridge.
“When no one stepped up to repair the concrete bridge over the river after it collapsed, I decided to build a floating bamboo bridge myself with the help of two or four local people to alleviate the sufferings of people including my students. We used 20 drums and more than hundred bamboos,” said headmaster Ibrahim Ali.

“The bridge cost about Tk one lakh. The concrete bridge on the Sati River has remained collapsed for a year, causing sufferings of the villagers on both sides of the river,” said an employee of Naodabas Dakhil Madrasa Md Ruhul Amin.
Parents-in-law pour acid on woman over family feud in Lalmonirhat
A 25-year-old woman in Lalmonirhat district has been hospitalised with severe burn injuries after her parents-in-law allegedly poured acid on her over a family feud.
According to locals, Mahmuda Khatun's husband Hamidul Islam and her parents-in-law used to lock into altercation with her over trivial matters since their marriage.

Following such a feud on Wednesday night, Mahmuda’s father-in-law Atoar Rahman and mother-in-law Hamida Begum threw acid on her in their house in the Gendukuri area of Tongbhanga union in Hatibandha upazila, according to her father Abdul Malek Miah.
Locals rescued the woman and rushed her to Hatibandha Hospital first and then to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, where she is currently being treated.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha Police Station, said, "On information, we went to the hospital and saw the condition of the acid attack survivor. Legal steps will be taken after an investigation."
5 ABT men convicted for militant activities in Lalmonirhat
A Lalmonirhat court on Tuesday sentenced two members of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) to life term imprisonment and three others to 10 years imprisonment.
The lifers are Hasan Ali, 23, and Asmat Ali Laltu, 25, of the district.
The other convicts are-Safiul Alam Saddam, 22, Abu Nayeem, 25, and Ali Hossain, 20.
Lalmonirhat District and Session Judge Mizanur Rahman of Special Tribunal-1 delivered the sentence.

The court also fined the five convicts Tk 5,000, in default, to serve in jail for another six months.
Lalmonirhat court police sub-inspector (SI) Musa Alam said a team from Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) -13 of Rangpur detained the five ABT men after conducting a drive at a house in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat on October 30 in 2018.
During the drive, the Rab members seized foreign pistols, magazines, firing pins, detonators and bullets from the militants' possession.
On the following day, a case was filed at the Kaliganj police station against the detainees.
