Covid claims three more lives in Sylhet
Over 150 more people have tested positive for Covid in Sylhet division in the past 24 hours. Three more persons have also succumbed to the virus, health officials said Friday.
Of the 155 people, some 89 are from Sylhet district, five from Sunamganj, eight from Habiganj and 36 are from Moulvibazar, according to a report signed by Sultana Razia, Divisional Director of Health.

Some 17 people have been admitted to different hospitals of Sylhet division in 24 hours till Friday morning. Of them, 15 are from Sylhet, and one each from Sunamganj and Moulavibazar, according to officials.
A total of 291 people are currently undergoing treatment at different hospitals of Sylhet division. Besides, 100 more have recovered from corona in the past 24 hours.

With the new numbers, the division's Covid caseload now stands at 24,807 and of them, 16,427 people have been infected in Sylhet district alone.
Some 23,141 have recovered from the virus to date. And 459 people have so far died of Covid in the division.
IBBL Chondipool sub-branch inaugurated in Sylhet
Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) inaugurated its Chondipool sub-branch under the Dakshin Surma branch in Sylhet Monday.

3 missing children rescued from Sylhet's Jaflong
Three minor boys, who went missing from Sylhet's Dakshin Surma two days ago, were rescued from the district's Gowainghat Saturday.
Some locals handed them over to police after finding them at Jaflong Zero Point, said Dakshin Surma Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monirul Islam.
The children are 13-year-old twin brothers Hassan and Hossain, and Apu, 10, from Dakshin Surma's village Ahmedpur.

All three are madrasa students. Hassan and Hossain's cousin Salah Uddin said the trio left the house around 6am Thursday and did not return.
After failing to trace them, he filed a general diary with Dakshin Surma police station the same day.

Case filed over Sylhet triple murder
A case was filed in connection with the killing of three people including two children in Goainghat upazila of Sylhet district.
Father of slain Alema filed the case with Goainghat Police Station early Thursday, said officer-in-charge of the police station Abdul Ahad.

Earlier on Wednesday, three people including two minor children were found dead at a house at Binnakandi South para in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Alema, 30, wife of Hifzur Rahman and her two children—Mizan 8, and Anisa, 3. Hifzur was found wounded during the incident.

Hifzur is now undergoing treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital under police custody.
According to the local people, miscreants swooped on the house sometime in the night and stabbed Alema to death and killed the two babies after slitting their throats.

They also hit Hifzur with sharp weapons, leaving him injured.
Police suspected that miscreants carried out the attack over previous enmity.
31-yr-old raped by three in Sylhet
A 31-year-old woman was allegedly raped by three men near Nilgaon Putikata bridge in Jalalabad upazila of Sylhet district.
One of them, police said, took the woman out on Monday night on the pretext of wedding shopping. He and the woman were in a relationship.

Two of the accused -- Taj Uddin, 22, son of Kaptan Mia, and Ekhlasur Rahman, 27, son of Rajan Mia of Islampur Mansinagar village of the upazila -- have been arrested.
The third accused, 27-year-old Phul Mia, an auto-rickshaw driver, is on the run.

On Monday evening, Taj asked the woman to meet him so that the two could go for wedding shopping. Later, Taj picked her up from the meeting place in an auto-rickshaw in which Ekhlasur was already seated.
The trio took her near Nilgaon Putikata Bridge and raped her, Sylhet Metropolitan Police said in a release. Taj and Ekhlasur were caught by passersby after the woman raised an alarm. The duo was later handed over to the police.

The woman lodged a complaint at the Jalalabad police station on Tuesday, based on which an FIR for rape was filed against the accused. "Efforts are on to nab the third accused on the run," a police official said.
The woman has been sent to the local one-stop crisis centre for treatment.
Sylhet residents suffer 4-hour power cut
Most areas of Sylhet city Tuesday went through a four-hour power cut due to glitch in Kumargaon grid line.Areas of the city including Zindabazar, Bandarbazar, Chauhatta, Amberkhana, Lamabazar, Rikabibazar, Nayasarak, Kumarpara, Shibganj, Sheikhghat and Taltala had been without power supply from 7 pm to 10.50 pm.
At around 8 pm the department officials informed our correspondent about the mechanical glitch in grid line.

Khandaker Mokammel Hossain, chief engineer of the Power Development Board (PDB) Sylhet, said there were some problems with the grid line and that’s why the power supply to the three feed lines of the city were suspended.
However, he could not say the cause of the glitch.
In November last year, a power transformer at the substation of the national grid line in Kumargaon was burnt in a terrible fire and Sylhet had to be without electricity for almost two days.

Sylhet again jolted by successive earthquakes
Two earthquakes in two minutes jolted Sylhet on Monday evening.
The tremors were felt at 6:27 pm and 6:29 pm, according to the report.
The magnitude of the quakes were 3.8 and epicenter was Jalalpur Union of South Surma Upazila, 10 km away from Sylhet Meteorological Office.

Senior meteorologist of Sylhet Meteorological Office Saeed Ahmed Chowdhury confirmed the development to UNB.
Earlier on May 29, Sylhet was hit by five earthquakes in quick succession.

TikTok out-of-control: Teen goes for shoot, gets raped
A 16-year-old girl was drugged and raped in Sylhet’s Lamapara where she was lured in believing she would shoot for Tik Tok and Likee videos.
Rickshaw puller Kamal Hossain, the girl's father, filed a case Wednesday at Shahparan Police Station, against Tik Tok and Likee content creators Juber Ahmed Fanny of Lamapara and Liza of Tilagar.

It was learned from the case statement that the victim was into Likee and TikTok video sharing community.
Few months back she came to know Liza, who was part of the same community, and offered to take her along for a shoot in Jaflong, along with another companion, Fanny.

On May 19, Liza went to Fanny’s house in Lamapara, where she was deceived and raped.
The investigating officer of the case, SI Anjan Singh, said police were trying to arrest the accused using all means.
Angry rickshaw pullers lay siege to Sylhet Nagar Bhaban; several cars vandalised
Several vehicles belonging to the Sylhet City Corporation were vandalised Wednesday afternoon as rickshaw pullers clashed with the municipality staff in front of Nagar Bhaban (City Hall).
A group of rickshaw pullers were demonstrating in front of Nagar Bhaban demanding the authorities return their battery-powered, or electric rickshaws, that had been seized during an SCC drive.

According to witnesses, SCC staff closed the main gate of Nagar Bhaban as agitated rickshaw pullers attempted to get inside.
MC College gang-rape:HC orders suspension of principal, hostel superintendent
The High Court on Wednesday ordered the authorities concerned to suspend the principal and hostel superintendent of MC College in Sylhet within 7 days for their negligence of duty over the gang-rape of a woman on the campus in September last year.
The court also ordered the authorities concerned to take departmental action against Principal Prof Mohammad Saleh Ahmed and hostel superintendent Jiban Krishna Acharaya.
The HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order.

The court on Tuesday fixed today for passing an order after hearing on a rule issued over the rape incident.
Advocate Mohammad Mishbahuddin stood for the writ petitioner while deputy attorney general Nowraz Mohammad Russel represented the state.
The High Court on September 29 last year formed an investigation committee to look into the MC College gang rape incident.
A suo moto rule was issued in this regard by the bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim.
It also asked the committee to record the statement of the victim, plaintiff, Principal of MC College, witnesses and others related to the case.

The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain why punitive action should not be taken against the Principal of MC College and hall superintendent for their negligence to save the victim and allowing outsiders to stay at the dormitory.
The college principal and others concerned were made respondents to the rule.
