BPL 2023: Mahmudullah in Barishal, Mushfiqur in Sylhet
The players' draft for BPL 2023 took place in a hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday (November 23). Allrounder Mahmudullah Riyad will play for Fortune Barishal in the new season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and Mushfiuqr Rahim will represent Sylhet Strikers. This year’s BPL is set to start the first week of January 2023.
In Barishal, Mahmudullah will get Shakib Al Hasan in the team, and in Sylhet, Mushiqur will play with Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. While Sylhet signed Masrhafe outside the draft, Barishal kept Shakib for the season.
Former Bangladesh captains Mohammad Ashraful and Mominul Haque did not get a team in the draft. On draft day, it was unclear if any team would show any interest in them.

Along with Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Anamul Haque Bijoy, and Ebadot Hossain were roped in by Barishal.

One of the major talking points leading up to the BPL 2023 players' draft was where Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim would play next season. Riyad and Shakib will play together for the Barishal franchise, while Mushfiqur and Mashrafe will be seen playing together for Sylhet.

Two ninth-graders killed on Sylhet-Tamabil highway as motorcycles collide
Two ninth-graders were killed and a youth was seriously injured on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway in Jaintiapur upazila as two motorcycles collided, police said.
The students were identified as 15-year-olds Sakran Hasan and Md Shaheen Ahmad. They both were from Gowainghat upazila and students of Amir Miah High School Jaflong. Injured Mamum Ahmed, 20, is from Jaintiapur's Nijpat union.
"The accident occurred in the Sreepur Assampara area as Sakran and Shaheen were returning to Jaintiapur and Mamum was going to Jaflong on their motorbikes. Their vehicles collided as one of them tried to overtake a truck," Golam Dastgir Ahmad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jaintapur Model Police Station, said.
"The impact of the crash left all of them critically injured. Locals rushed them to the local hospital. The injured were later referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where Shaheen was declared dead upon arrival, and Sakran died at 7pm. Mamum is still not out of the woods," he added.

Commuters suffer as bus strike underway in Sunamganj
A two-day bus strike enforced by Sunamganj District Transport Owners and Workers’ Association began on Friday morning, causing suffering of the commuters.
As the strike was enfoced ahead of BNP's divisional rally slated for Saturday, the party leaders alleged that the strike was called as per the government's directive to thwart their political programme.
The association leaders said they are observing the strike to realise their four-point demand, which includes withdrawal of tolls on Lamakazi bridge on the Sunamganj-Sylhet road, banning batter-run three-wheelers and unlicensed CNG-run autorickshaws from the highways, banning BRTC buses and renovation and modernization of Sunamganj Bus Terminal.

Habiganj Motor Owners’ group on Thursday called for an indefinite strike on movement of buses, demanding an end to “administrative harassment” and halting illegal three-wheelers.
On the other hand, Sylhet district Workers’ Solidarity Council called a 12-hour strike from 6:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday on movement of all types of vehicles to press home their four-point demands.
Besides, Sylhet district Road Transport Owners’ Association also called a dawn to dusk strike on Saturday in Sylhet on their two-point demand including for not issuing any new license for CNG-run auto rickshaw.

He said they took the decision to enforce the strike in protest against the administrative actions to send back their buses from Salamatpur bus stand in Nabiganj on Thursday.
Several leaders of the group were present at the press conference.
On the other hand, Md Zakaria, general secretary of Sylhet district Workers Solidarity Council, said they would continue the strike until their four-point demand, including for giving permission to lift stones from all quarries in the district and stopping movement of three-wheelers on the highway, is met.
Accommodation and food were managed for BNP leaders and activists, who would join the rally from remote areas, party insiders informed.
Abdul Kaium, president of Sylhet district unit BNP, alleged that the transport organizations called the strikes under pressure from the government.
“No conspiracy will be able to halt the mass gathering of the party men,” he claimed.
BNP will hold its seventh divisional rally on November 19.

Leaders and activists of Sadar upazila of the party had already been asked to come to the city a few days earlier. The same instruction was given to the upazila-level leaders and activists of the party.
BNP on September 27 announced a series of public rallies in 10 divisional and big cities. The party will end its divisional rallies through a mass gathering in Dhaka city on December 10.
Rangpur hammer Sylhet by five wickets to lift second NCL title
Rangpur Division beat Sylhet Division by five wickets in the sixth round of the National Cricket League in Bogura to clinched the title of the 24th edition of the event.
It was the second NCL title for Rangpur. They last won the title seven years ago in the 2014-2015 season. Rangpur ended their previous four editions of the league as runners-up.
Rangpur just needed to score 89 runs to beat Sylhet in the sixth round of the event and clinch the title. They did it in the first session of the day.
The sixth-round match was a great chance for Sylhet to win their first title while a draw was fine for Rangpur.
In the first round of the league, Rangpur suffered a big defeat to Dhaka Division. But in the next five rounds, they registered four wins and ended a match with a draw.
Pace-bowling duo Mushfik Hasan and Robiul Haque were the main architects of Rangpur's success in this year's NCL. They bagged 25 and 17 wickets each. Abdullah Al Mamun also did well for them. The 18-year-old all-rounder scored 326 runs with a double-century and bagged 11 wickets.

Chasing a target of 89 runs, Rangpur lost four wickets before even posting 50 runs on the board. Sylhet pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib bagged three wickets. But Mim Mosaddek stood firm like a rock in the middle for Rangpur and scored 29 to seal the victory for his team.
The other sixth-round match of NCL tier one between Chattogram and Dhaka Division is still underway. Dhaka need 87 runs to win the match with five wickets in hand.
In tier two, Khulna beat Rajshahi by nine wickets. The other tier two match between Barishal and Dhaka Metro is still underway and Dhaka Metro need 36 to win the match with seven wickets in hand.

Motorcade of Ilyas Ali’s wife attacked ahead of BNP’s Sylhet rally; police detains JCD men
A motorcade carrying the wife of former BNP Oraganising Secretary M Ilyas Ali came under attack on Tuesday while she was campaigning in favour of the party’s Sylhet divisional rally slated for November 19.
However, police detained three leaders of the BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabi Chattra Dal (JCD) in this connection.
The detainees were Osmaninagar upazila unit JCD’s Joint Convener Faisal Ahmed, and JCD leaders Nurul Islam and Shahed Ahmed.
Local BNP insiders alleged that a group of the Awami League’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) carried out the attack when Ilyas Ali’s wife Tahsina Rushdi Luna, also an advisor to the BNP’s Chairperson Khaleda Zia, got on her vehicle after campaigning in the Goyalabzar area of Osmaninagar upazila in the district in the afternoon.

The upazila unit BNP General Secretary Abdullah Misbah was also injured in the attack, they claimed.
Soon after the attack, the BNP leader with her motorcade left the spot for Tajpur Bazar where she distributed leaflets for the upcoming rally.
From there, she continued on to Dayamir Bazar, and that is where the police detained the trio of JCD men who were campaigning with her.
Nazmul Islam, president of the district unit BCL, denied their involvement in the attack.
“No BCL man is involved with the attack and the BNP is making a false allegation,” he claimed.
SM Mayeen Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Osmaninagar police station, acknowledged that they detained the three JCD men in connection with the attack on motorcade.

He said they were detained for questioning regarding the clash they got into with Awami League and BCL men.
Chattogram, Sylhet lead in 6th round of NCL matches
Chattogram and Sylhet Divisions are leading against Dhaka and Rangpur Divisions in the sixth round of tier one of the National Cricket League.
After day two of the ongoing round, Chattogram are leading by 192 runs with seven wickets in hand in their second innings. Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Parvez Hossain Emon hit a fifty for them. At the end of the day in BKSP, Chattogram scored 187 for three on top of their first innings total of 203 for all wickets.
In reply to their first innings, Dhaka scored 198 for all wickets with Abdul Mazid and Sumon Khan hitting a fifty each. For Chattogram, Yeasin Arafat Meshu bagged six wickets.
Sylhet are leading by 87 runs against Rangpur at Shahid Chandu Stadium in Bogura. They were bowled out for 168 at the end of day two. They scored 107 in the first innings. Rangpur, who scored 188 in their first innings, will start their second innings on day three.

In tier two, Rajshahi are trailing by 10 runs after suffering a follow-on in reply to Khulna’s first innings of 266 runs at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna. Rajshahi were bowled out for 54 in their first innings and in the second, at the end of day two, they scored 202 for five wickets.
In Sylhet, Barishal are leading by 92 runs against Dhaka Metro. Barishal scored 211 in the first innings. In reply, Dhaka posted 222 runs. And in their second innings, Barishal scored 103 for two at the end of day two.
Rangpur are leading the points table of tier two with three wins in five matches. And Sylhet are right behind them with two wins in five matches. With three wins in five matches, Dhaka Metro are leading the points table in tier two. Rajshahi are behind them with two wins in five matches.
BNP gears up for its 7th divisional rally in Sylhet
BNP is preparing to hold its seventh divisional rally in Sylhet city amid much enthusiasm on November 19, ignoring the threat of ‘arrests and harassment by the government authorities’.
The construction work of the stage for the rally started on Thursday at Sylhet Govt Alia Madrasa in Chowhatta area of the city.
District BNP leaders said they have given strategic instructions to the leaders and activists from the previous experiences. They were asked to arrange accommodation and food in their houses for the leaders and activists who will come from other districts to join the rally.

Apprehending transport strike ahead of the rally like the previous ones, the leaders and activists of Sadar upazila have already been asked to come to the city few days earlier. The same instruction was given to the upazila level leaders and activists of the party.
Central leaders will come to Sylhet on November 17. For this, the leaders and activists will take position at the venue from that day.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association and Sylhet District Bus Owners Association General Secretary Ziaul Kabir Palash said he has not received any information about any kind of transport strike in the district before November 19.

So far, he has not received any information about transport workers going on strike. “If any such decision is taken, the media will be informed in advance,” he added.
Expressing hope to hold the largest rally here like never before, Sylhet Metropolitan Member Secretary Miftah Siddiqui said the leaders who want to get nominated from BNP in the 19 seats of Sylhet division in the upcoming parliamentary elections are also campaigning to make the rally a success.
The party activists are facing various obstructions from the ruling party and administration, said Sylhet District BNP General Secretary Emran Ahmed Chowdhury.
“Despite all obstructions, people will make the rally in Sylhet a success,” he added.
He also hoped that the law enforcement agencies would provide full cooperation.

BNP leaders and activists here have also informed the police commissioner in writing to maintain peace and order, said Sylhet district BNP president Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury.
Besides, six committees have been formed on November 10 to make the rally a success, said Abdul Qayyum.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Nisharul Arif said the allegations of police raids on the houses of the BNP leaders and activists ahead of the rally are not true.
“Arresting the accused is a routine work of police. It is not the intention of the police to harass anyone unnecessarily,” said the SMP Commissioner.
As part of the move to continue the pace of its ongoing movement, the BNP on September 27 announced a series of public rallies in 10 divisional cities.
BNP will conclude the divisional rallies through a mass gathering in Dhaka city on December 10.
