Global Covid cases top 445 million
The overall number of Covid cases has surged past 445 million as Omicron infections keep rising across the world.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 445,005,937 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,994,717 Sunday morning.
The US has recorded 79,265,726 cases so far and 958,437 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 42,957,477 on Saturday, as 5,921 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.
Besides, 289 deaths from the pandemic since Friday morning took the total death toll to 514,878.
Meanwhile, Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January last year, registered 29,040,800 cases as of Saturday, while its Covid death toll rose to 652,216.
Situation in Bangladesh
Amid the declining trend in Covid-19 cases and fatalities, Bangladesh reported 13 more Covid-linked deaths with 368 fresh cases in 24 hours till Saturday morning.
The daily positivity rate slightly declined to 2.11 per cent from Friday’s 3.20 per cent after testing 17,463 samples during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
On Friday, Bangladesh reported six more Covid-linked deaths with 604 fresh cases.

The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 29,077 while the caseload to 19,46,737.
Among the new deceased, seven were men and six women.
Eight of the deaths were reported from Dhaka division while two from Barishal and one each from Chattogram, Rangpur, Mymensingh divisions.

Meanwhile, the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 per cent.
However, the recovery rate rose to 94.52 per cent with the recovery of 4,108 more patients during the 24-hour period.
Bangladesh rolls out Covid inoculation drive for 10 million people
Bangladesh on Saturday rolled out another phase of its mega Covid inoculation drive, aiming to cover a whopping 10 million people.
Across the country, including capital Dhaka, UNB found people thronging vaccine centres to get a shot in the arm.
“The special vaccination drive with an aim to inoculate one crore people in 24 hours started around 8.30am in districts across the country, including Dhaka,” said member secretary of Corona Vaccine Employment Committee of Health Services Division, Dr Shamsul Haque.
“There is no need for registration. People can just walk into the centres to get a shot of the Covid vaccine. People who are yet to get even their first shot should avail this opportunity. A vax card will be given to people, post-inoculation," he added.
Our Natore Correspondent reports: The local administration started the vaccination campaign in 250 centres across the district to bring around three lakh people under the ambit of the programme.
Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ahmed visited a number of vaccination centres in the morning.

Our Cumilla Correspondent adds: The special inoculation drive began in 701 vaccination centres across Cumilla, with an ambitious target to cover three lakh people.
Some 6.55 million vaccine shots will be provided at different levels on Saturday -- 4.14 million doses in 13,800 wards of the upazilas, 0.324 million doses in 1,068 wards of municipalities, and 2.0925 million shots in 465 wards across cities.

Besides, 3.5 million vaccine doses will be provided to special communities, including workers at factories, markets, restaurants, boats, launches and ships, brick kilns and other floating communities.
Since the inauguration of the mass inoculation drive in Bangladesh on February 7 last year, some 8,19,39,878 people have been fully vaccinated with two shots and 10,958,331 people received their first doses till Friday (February 25). Besides, 3,59,826 people have received booster doses.
Global Covid cases top 337 million
The overall number of Covid cases has now surpassed 337 million, with a spike in cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus across the world.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 337,112, 379 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,563,776 Thursday morning.
The US has recorded 68,508,181 cases so far and 857,672 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 37,901,241 on Wednesday, including 282,970 new cases registered in 24 hours across the South Asian country, as per the federal health ministry's latest data.
Wednesday was the seventh consecutive day when more than 200,000 daily new cases were registered in India this year.
Besides, 441 deaths from the pandemic recorded since Tuesday morning took the total death toll to 487,202.
Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since last January, registered 23,433,277 cases as of Wednesday, while its Covid death toll rose to 622,121.

Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh reported 12 more Covid-linked deaths with 9,500 fresh cases in 24 hours till Wednesday morning following a continuous rise in its infection rate.
The positivity rate in the country further increased to 25.11 percent from Tuesday’s 23.98 percent after testing 37,573 samples, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Bangladesh last logged 10,126 cases and 215 deaths on August 12 last year, with a positivity rate of 22.46% percent in 24 hours.
The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 28,176 while the caseload mounted to 1,642, 294 on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the mortality rate remained static at 1.72 percent.
However, the recovery rate further declined to 94.64 per cent with the recovery of 473 more patients during the 24-hour period.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases reached 55 with the detection of 22 more cases till Monday, according to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data.
On December 9 last year, Bangladesh again logged zero Covid-related death after nearly three weeks as the pandemic was apparently showing signs of easing.
The country reported this year’s first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year, along with 178 infections, since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.
Bangladesh reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 last year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 last year.
