3 die, 40 injured in Ashulia footwear factory fire
At least three people were burned to death and 40 others injured as a massive fire broke out at a footwear factory in Ashulia of Savar Wednesday afternoon.
Fire fighters recovered three charred bodies from the spot, said Shahjahan Sikder, deputy assistant director (media cell) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.
Two of deceased were women and while identity of another person could not be known as the body was severely burnt, he said.

According to fire service, the fire broke out at Uniworld Footwear factory beside Rupayan Mart building in Jamgara area around 5.16 pm.
On information, six fire fighting units rushed to the spot.

Later, four more units joined the extinguishing work.
Ashulia Police station Officer-in-Charge Kamruzzam said that 40 people were injured in the incident.
No Covid lockdown right now in Bangladesh: Health Minister
Bangladesh has taken all precautions against new coronavirus variant, Omicron, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said on Sunday ruling out any further Covid-induced lockdown in the country
“The Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh is under control now and there is no possibility to enforce any lockdown in the country,” he told reporters after visiting the under-construction Bangladesh Institute of Health Management Building (BIHM) in Savar.
He said the government is keeping eye on the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) decisions on the Omicron variant but above all the precautions and preparations people will need to follow the health protocols, he said.
He, however, said that the government does not see any need for sealing the land border of the country as yet.

“Already letters have been sent to all the districts to take up preparations to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, “he said.
Zahid said there is no need to worry about the new coronavirus variant Omicron which has no presence in the country.
“Any one coming from South Africa or other Omicron-affected countries will need to possess negative certificate from tests 48 hours before the flight and will need to stay in mandatory quarantine for 14 days, “he said.
Screening at airports has been increased and the Covid-19 testing labs have been expanded up to 30,000 square feet from 2,000, he said.
He said Bangladesh has now enough stock of vaccines and preparation to face any situation.
“Already more than seven crore people have received the first dose while around four crore have been fully vaccinated,” he said.
“Like many other countries, we got the prime minister’s nod to administer the booster dose of Covid-19 vaccines, and soon it will be provided to the above-60 citizens,” he said.

Savar drug peddler falls off roof while fleeing arrest bid, dies
A woman drug peddler died after falling off the roof of her four-storey building in the Aminbazar area of Savar Tuesday morning as anti-narcotics sleuths attempted to arrest her.
The deceased was identified as Panna Begum.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Narcotics Control Authority's Savar office raided Panna Begum's house this morning.
Sensing the presence of the anti-narcotics sleuths, the accused went to the terrace of her house but fell to the ground as she tried to jump to the roof of the adjacent building.
Panna Begum died on the spot, officials said. "The body has sent it to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy," an officer said.
HC committee seals off 4 warehouses of Evaly
The committee formed by the High Court to manage, control and asses the liabilities of controversial e-commerce platform Evaly has sealed off its four wearhouses at Savar on Monday.
The five-membered committee led by former Appellate Division justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik visited two warehouses at Aminbazar and two others at Baliarpur Monday noon.
The committed found some beverages, television sets and packed electronic products in one of the warehouses.

Man arrested for thrashing two girls in Savar
Police arrested a man on Monday on charge of harassing and thrashing wo sisters at Savar ferry ghat. The accused was identified as Md Selim, a local muscleman accused in several other cases including a Narcotic case in 2017, said Kazi Mainul Islam officer-in-charge of Savar Model police station. Earlier, on Sunday mother of the two girls filed a complaint against two people, mentioning Selim as the main accused at the Savar Model police station. According to the complaint, on Saturday night the victims were returning home at Kaundia upazila in Savavr from Mirpur. As they reached the Kaundia ferry ghat around 9:30 pm Selim waylaid them and sexually abusing the elder sister.
As they protested Selim verbally abused them and started beating both of them with an umbrella with the help of his nephew Ripon. As people started gathering, hearing cries of the victims, Selim and Ripon ran away leaving them severely injured.

Locals later took them to Savar Upazila health complex. The elder sister said, “ Selim hugged me with ill intentions and as we protested he thrashed us.”
After filing axcsse Kaundia police outpost in-charge Harunur Rashid conducted a drive at the Kaundia bazar area and arrested Selim.

3 hijackers arrested over murder of garment worker
Three members of an organised hijacking gang have been arrested from different parts of the country over the murder of a garment worker in Ashulia of Savar.
The arrestees are ringleader Md Aminul, 28, his associates Sagor Molla 28 and Md Yunus,35, according to a CID press release.

Garment worker Ramjan,19, was killed on October 1 after being stabbed by some hijackers.
Kulsum Begum, aunt of the victim, filed a case with Ashulia Police over the matter on the same night.
The Criminal Investigation Department of Police started investigation following similar reports of snatching in the same area.
A special team of CID arrested Aminul from Narsingdi on Sunday.

Later, police arrested Sagor from Bagerhat and Yunus from Jamalpur.
During primary interrogation, all of them confessed to killing Ramjan.
3 die in two road accidents in Savar
Three people, including a garments worker were killed in two separate road accidents in Dhamrai of Savar on Freiday.
The deceased are Khokon Mia, 25, Delwar Hossain ,24, and Radhanath Sarkar, 55.
Of them, Khokon Mia was a worker in a garment factory called Joypura Mom Fashion.
According to witnesses, the motorcycle boarding Khokon and Delwar came in collision course with a truck near Joypura bus stand in Dhamrai Friday evening.

While Khokon died on the spot, Delwar was pronounced dead after being shifted to a local medical facility.
Meanwhile, Radhanath died after a covered van moving at breakneck speed crushed him while he was out on a walk near Sutipara bus stand.
Officer-in Charge of Dhamrai Police Atiqur Rahman said,”Although we failed to trace the truck that hit Khokon and Delwar, highway police seized the covered van that hit Radhanath.”

Further action will be taken in accordance with law, he added.
Rani gets posthumous recognition as world’s smallest cow
The dwarf cow named Rani, reared in a Savar farm has finally been recognized as the world's smallest cow by Guinness Book of World Records, a month after her death.
Owner of Shekor Agro Industries Limited in Pathalia union, Md Abu Sufiyan confirmed the news to UNB on Tuesday morning.
On Monday afternoon Guinness Book of World Records authority confirmed the news through a mail, said Abu Sufiyan.
“We had sent Rani’s autopsy report to Guinness Book authority to prove there was no hormone injection or anything artificial behind her dwarf stature,” said Abu Sufiyan.

Satisfied this wasn’t the case, they announced Rani as the world’s smallest cow, said the owner of the farm.
On August 19, Rani died due to ‘excessive gas accumulated in its stomach,’ according to Sajedul Islam, livestock officer of Savar.
The dwarf cow of the Boxer Bhutti breed stood just 51cm (20in) high and weighed 28kg (62Ib).
It was waiting to be recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's smallest cow.
The cow turned into a celebrity since its news first broke back in July and hundreds of visitors flocked to the farm to catch a sight of it.The title for the world's smallest cow had been held officially by Manikyam, in neighbouring India, which measures 61.1cm from the hoof to the withers.

Fire breaks out at Savar warehouse, 20 injured
As many as 20 people were injured as a fire broke out at a warehouse off the Dhaka-Aricha highway in the Rajphulbaria bus stand area of Savar early on Thursday.
Sources at the fire services department said the blaze started in the morning and soon engulfed the warehouse belonging to Singer Refrigerators. On information, 11 fire tenders rushed to spot and it took them some time to douse the flames.

Sources claimed the fire spread rapidly because of the presence of chemicals, colours and other flammable materials inside the warehouse on the outskirts of the capital. However, the origin of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
"As many as 20 people, including firemen, sustained injuries in the blaze. The firemen suffered injuries while dousing the flames," the sources said.
"Traffic on the Dhaka-Aricha highway remained suspended till 11.25 am due to the fire," said Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Savar Model police station.

Power supply in the area has also been disconnected, causing inconvenience to hundreds of local residents.
