Taposh condoles death of ex-Chandpur lawmaker Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh expressed profound shock and condoled the death of former Chandpur lawmaker Dr Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan.
In a condolence message on Friday, he said, "Dr Mohammad Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan, while serving as Chief Engineer of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation, was fully involved in various activities and accelerated the development activities of the Corporation. He made the Corporation a people-friendly organization."

He prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Bhuiyan breathed his last around 6:42 am on Friday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. He was 75.
He was elected MP from Chandpur-4 in 2014.
Ex-Chandpur lawmaker Dr Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan passes away
Former Awami League MP from Chandpur-4 (Faridganj) and former district Awami League president Dr Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan passed away at a private hospital in Dhaka on Friday morning.
He is survived by his wife, three sons and a host of relatives and friends.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held in Faridganj on Friday afternoon. His home is in Kaunia village of Rupsha South Union of Faridganj.
According to relatives, Shamsul was suffering from an incurable disease.
He was the founder of Faridganj Gardkalindia Hazera-Hasmat Degree College; former chief engineer of Dhaka City Corporation, former senate member of Dhaka University and founder of Apollo Group of Industries.
He was elected MP from Faridganj in 2014.
In the 12th parliamentary election of 2024, he contested as an independent candidate from Chandpur-4 (Faridganj) and Chandpur-3 (Sadar-Haimchar) constituencies as an independent candidate and was defeated.

Veteran journalist Abdul Wahed Khan passes away
Veteran journalist Abdul Wahed Khan has passed away in Sylhet.
He breathed his last at a private hospital in Sylhet around 11:30 pm on Thursday.
Wahed was the editor of Sylhet’s Jalalabadi newspaper and weekly Sylhet Samachar.
In the early eighties, he started the daily Jalalabadi from the weekly Sylhet Samachar House.
Besides journalism, Wahed was associated with various social and cultural organizations and various educational institutions. He also served as the general secretary of Sylhet Central Muslim Literary Society (KMUSAS).
Wahed also established the Jalalabad Academy, Sylhet.
Abdul Wahed Khan served as the Sylhet bureau chief of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) from 1972 to 1978.
Prior to that, he worked in the Daily Ittefaq in Dhaka from 1962 to 1971.
Arifin Shuvoo's mother passes away
Dhallywood's star Arifin Shuvoo, widely regarded for his portrayal of the Father of the Nation in the 2023 biopic "Mujib: The Making of Nation," lost his mother on Wednesday night.
Shuvoo's mother, Khairun Nahar, passed away due to a brain haemorrhage at a private hospital in the capital at 11:55 pm on Wednesday. She was 70.

Zayed Khan, former general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artists Association and actor, confirmed the matter. In a Facebook post, he wrote that the mother of actor Arifin Shuvoo passed away yesterday (Wednesday) at 11:55 pm while undergoing treatment at the capital's National Institute of Neuro Sciences & Hospital.

Her namaz-e-Janaza took place after the Fazr prayers, and her burial will be completed at the Martyrs Intellectual Graveyard in the capital.
According to sources close to the actor, Shuvoo's mother, Khairun Nahar, felt ill on January 21 (Saturday). Since then, she was undergoing treatment in the ICU of the hospital.

Besides, she was suffering from schizophrenia since 2017.
People from all walks of life, especially the fans, colleagues, and admirers of the acclaimed actor, have been sharing condolences and offering prayers for the departed soul.
Daily Dinkal Editor Dr Rezwan Hossain Siddiqui no more
Dr Rezwan Hossain Siddiqui, editor of Daily Dinkal and a senior member of the Dhaka Union of Journalists, has passed away.
Rezwan breathed his last at a private hospital in the capital’s Shyamoli around 10 pm on Tuesday where he had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related issues.
His daughter Aditi Sidduqui confirmed the news of his demise.
Rezwan’s namaz-e-janaza is scheduled to take place at 12pm on Wednesday at the National Press Club.
Legendary Indian singer Ustad Rashid Khan passes away
Ustad Rashid Khan, the subcontinent’s one of the most popular and revered Indian classical singers, passed away on Tuesday after battling with cancer. He was 55.
The celebrated music maestro was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at a hospital in Kolkata, reports Hindustan Times. He was put on a ventilator and was receiving oxygen support, before breathing his last at 3:45 pm (local time).
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep condolence over the death of the revered artist, saying, "This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can't believe that Rashid Khan is no more."

Ustad Rashid Khan was born in Sahaswan, Badayun, Uttar Pradesh on July 1, 1968. Belonging to the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana (a particular style of singing which features medium-slow tempos, a full-throated voice and intricate rhythmic play) - he was the great-grandson of the legendary Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan Sahab, the founder of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana.
He was also the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and received his initial training from his maternal grand-uncle Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan.
Rashid Khan performed his debut concert at the age of eleven and became a part of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) in Kolkata when Nissar Hussain Khan transitioned to the academy. He was formally acknowledged as a musician at the academy by the age of 26.
The maestro experimented with combining conventional Hindustani music with lighter musical styles, including performances with Western instrumentalist Louis Banks. He also portrayed his versatility by playing in Jugalbandis (duets) alongside many acclaimed musicians including sitarist Shahid Parvez and others.
However, his stardom in the mainstream skyrocketed with his much-acclaimed song “Aaoge Jab Tum” from the 2007 Bollywood film ‘Jab We Met’, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor and directed by Imtiaz Ali.

After that, he also performed several popular tracks for Bollywood, notably “Allah Hi Rahem” (My Name is Khan), “Poore se zara sa” (Mausam), “Sajna” (Bapi Bari Ja), “Jheeni Re Jheeni” (Issaq) and “Bol Ke Lab Azad Hain” (Manto), to name a few.
The revered music maestro has also performed in Bangladesh several times, most notably at several editions of the Bengal Classical Music Festival in Dhaka.
For his contribution to the subcontinent’s music industry, Ustad Rashid Khan was awarded several awards, including India’s third-highest civilian award Padma Bhushan (2022), the fourth-highest civilian award Padma Shri (2006) and Banga Bhushan (2012), the most prestigious award in Kolkata.
DCCI mourns death of its former president Ali Hossain
President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), Ashraf Ahmed, and the DCCI's Board of Directors mourned and expressed their deep condolences at the death of Ali Hossain, the former DCCI president.
Hossain breathed his last on January 2 at the Evercare Hospital in Dhaka while undergoing treatment. He was 74.
He (Hossain) served the Dhaka Chamber as its president in 1996.
As a renowned industrialist, Hossain was the chairman of Hossain Group of Industries and Tejgaon Re-rolling Co Ltd engaged in different areas of businesses like consumer goods, still re-rolling mills, cold storage, textile mills, Land Mark Construction, chemicals, and auto assembling, among others.
He was buried at the Banani graveyard.
Ex Ambassador Zaman's mother passes away
Akhtar Banu, mother of Mahbub uz Zaman, former Ambassador and Secretary, passed away early Sunday.
She breathed her last at 5:30am at Ibn Sina Hospital in the capital’s Dhanmondi. She was 81.
Akhtar Banu was suffering from cancer and comorbidity problems, according to her family members.
Her Namaz-e-janaza was held at Masjid Takwa Dhanmondi after Zuhr prayers.
She was laid to rest in Azimpur new graveyard after namaz-e-janaza.
Her Qulkhani and doa will be held on Tuesday at 3.30pm at her Dhanmondi residence.
Poet Abu Bakar Siddique passes away
Eminent poet Abu Bakar Siddique passed away at a hospital in Khulna city Thursday morning. He was 91.
Abu Bakar, also father of ex-president Erahad’s second wife Bidisha Ershad, breathed his last at around 5:45 am this morning, Bidisha confirmed on social media.
The poet, who had been suffering from old-age complications for a long time, was taken to the ICU at Khulna City Hospital in critical condition on Wednesday.

His namaz-e-janaza will be held at Shaheed Hadis Park in Khulna after Juhr prayers.
Abu Bakar Siddique was born on August 19, 1934 at Gotapara in Bagerhat Sadar. His published books include more than 20 poetry books, four novels, 15 storybooks, and one rhyme book.
He received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1988.He also won the Bangladesh Kathashilpi Sangsad Award and the Bangladesh Lekhika Sangha Award, among others.
He passed his SSC examination from Bagerhat Secondary Government High School in 1952, HSC from Bagerhat Government Prafulla Chandra College in 1954, and completed his BA from the same college in 1956.

Then he got admitted to the Bangla Department of Dhaka University and obtained his master's degree in 1958.
In his professional life, Abu Bakar Siddique taught at Govt. Fazlul Haque College, Govt. Brajalal College, Kushtia College, Government Prafulla Chandra College, and Rajshahi University.
He retired as Associate Professor of the Bangla Department of Rajshahi University on July 7, 1994. He then taught at Queen's University and Notre Dame College in Dhaka.
Abu Bakar Siddiqui's published novels include “Jalarakshas,” “Kharadaha,” “Barudpora Prohor,” and “Ekatturer Hridobhasma.”
Prof Sofia Hasna Jahan Ali’s 27th death anniv today
Today is the 27th death anniversary of Sofia Hasna Jahan Ali (Dolly), professor, Department of Economics, Dhaka University.
Besides serving as the president of the Lioness Club of Dhaka east and the vice president of the Bangladesh economic association, Sofia was engaged in many other social development activities.

Sofia Hasna, wife of late Shaikh Maqsood Ali, was also reputed as an outstanding sportswoman and an exemplary sports organiser.
