The DNCC mayor issued the call at a meeting held at the Gulshan Nagar Bhaban for implementing the decision of the committee formed to stop the illegal vehicular movement as well as to stop the grabbing of footpaths and illegal parking in the capital.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Wednesday made the announcement after a committee meeting at Nagar Bhaban (south).
The Committee also announced a stretch of Elephant Road from Science Laboratory Intersection to Shahbagh Intersection will be made rickshaw-free from Sunday, under the DSCC.
The two city corporations in Dhaka have decided to ban rickshaws and van-gari (unmotorized transport vehicles) on three major thoroughfares from July 7 in an effort to address the growing traffic congestion.
It also declared to free those roads and footpaths from illegal grabbers.
During the meeting, the DNCC mayor said rickshaws are not banned, but need to be controlled, due to apprehension of accidents due to movement of motorized vehicles alongside rickshaws and other unmotorized vehicles. But they can still ply many roads apart from the ones announced, the DNCC Mayor said.
The DNCC will take a very strict position in this regard and the mobile courts will be conducted from tomorrow (July 7) for implementation of the decision.
He also urged the shop owners to move goods and installations from the sidewalks and roads immediately.
Atiqul Islam urged the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and the Bus Owners Association to run enough buses on these two roads to make up for the shortfall in transport verhicles. To secure the movement of students, he asked the authorities of the educational institutions to start bus or microbus services.
The mayor said that circular bus service will be started from Kuril Biswa Road to Malibagh at a later phase.
Among others, local AKM Rahmatullah, MP, Chief Executive Officer of DNCC Md Abdul Hai, Executive Director of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) Khandakar Rakibur Rahman, Director of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), Colonel Mahbubur Rahman, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Traffic Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, concerned Police officials of Progati Sarani and Mirpur Road, DNCC Ward Councillors and leaders of rickshaw and van owners' associations were present.
On June 19, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader had announced forming the special committee, led by Mayor Sayeed Khokon, at the 12th board meeting of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA).
