Police on Monday arrested a BNP leader on charges of fraud related to two cheques worth Tk 12 crore.
Police arrested Shamsul Alam, the central BNP leader and also MD of Messers Elias Brothers (MEB) Group, in the cases filed by Meghna Group.
Members of EPZ police station arrested him from his Golpahar intersection office in the afternoon.
Despite being a central executive committee member of BNP, Shamsul Alam has been inactive in politics for long.
Earlier, he was Vice President of city BNP and Kotwali thana BNP’s President.
In the 2008 parliament election, he got nomination from Kotwali-Bakolia constituency of Chattogram city but was defeated.
Mir Mohammad Nurul Huda, OC of EPZ police station, said Meghna Group lodged two cases in this regard.
Shamsul was arrested on the basis of the court finding him guilty.
