Mostofa Sikdar, the Swechchhasebak League leader in question, and his brother Sumon Sikdar reportedly obstructed the mobile court led by Executive Magistrate and Naria Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Rasheduzzaman around 2:30pm at the launch terminal.
The mobile court was at the launch terminal after arresting eight people for illegal sand lifting from Padma River and seizing a sand extracting machine, police and administration sources said.
A leader of ruling Awami League’s Naria Upazila unit said Mostafa had won the contract for protecting Naria Launch Terminal by throwing GO bags but he was illegally extracting sand.
Mostafa could not be reached for comments.
But his wife Nazma Akhter, also the vice-chairman of Naria Upazila, rejected the allegation. “My husband isn’t involved in illegal sand lifting. My husband went to the spot hearing sounds of an altercation and the AC Land ordered his arrest,” she claimed.
AC Land and Executive Magistrate Rasheduzzaman said Mostafa and his brother snatched five accused men and the sand extracting machine from the custody of the mobile court.
AKM Manjurul Haque Akand, officer-in-charge of Naria Police Station, said one person was arrested for obstructing government duty.
A case will be filed over the incident, the OC added.
