The city corporation has also taken necessary measures to construct new drains from Mujgunni to ‘Khude Khal’ and from Lobonchora Khetrokhali canal to Mathabhanga sluicegate for removing waterlogging.
Waterlogging of Khulna would be resolved if these plans are implemented, hoped Deputy Commissioner and City Corporation Mayor.
Knee-deep water on various roads in Khulna metropolis even due to little rain causes waterlogging. Moreover, the roads filled with garbage after the unclean mud became mixed with rainwater.
Public sufferings also mounts as brick-stone as well as rod and sand are piled up by the side of the road for various development works including construction of buildings.
However, the district administration and the city corporation have taken some steps to resolve the waterlogging problem.
People’s sufferings mounts from Power House intersection to Moilapota Intersection of one of the busy Sher-e-Bangla road of the Khulna metropolitan city for the last two months as a portion of the road was closed due to construction work. As a result, movement of transport was stopped in the surroundings localit --- Sheikhpara, Lohapotti and Ferryghat area.
Besides, the local residents are also facing sufferings because various roads were dug for WASA water supply project but those were not renovated or repaired.
SM Delwar Hossain, a resident of Sonadanga area, informed that “the people are facing extreme sufferings as the roads were not repaired even after completion of WASA work. On the other hand, some roads were renovated but not sincerely.
M Selim of Miapara informed that roads of these areas went under water before rain.
Advocate Kudrot-e-Khuda, General Secretary of Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJON) Khulna district General Secretary, said, “such digging continued day after day throughout the year due to non-coordination of the development agencies. Common people’s sufferings during development works has become our culture. Main reason behind this this, is lack of accountability and proper planning”.
Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, Secretary General of Greater Khulna Development Movement Coordination Committee, informed that “knee-deep water on various roads in the city after rain cause waterlogging. Despite the authority taking up various projects for removing waterlogging, these could not become effective due to lack of proper planning”.
Khulna WASA Deputy Managing Director MD Kamal Uddin Ahmed said, “There are no potholes of WASA anywhere on the road. However, some carpeting work is yet to be completed.”
Meanwhile, Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Chief Engineer M Nazmul Islam informed that necessary renovation work began on the roads. “Various programmes have already been undertaken to remove waterlogging,” he said.
