Inaugurating the centre at Motijheel, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said it has been set up for display and sale of multi-purpose jute goods produced by the local entrepreneurs.
Through this centre, local and foreign buyers would be able to obtain knowledge about the multi-purpose jute goods and sell them from one place, Humayun added. The Minister hoped that the centre would play an important role in restoring ‘the lost glory of jute’.
He said that it would not be possible for the ‘Golden Fiber’, as jute is called, to survive and thrive through conventional methods.
To save it, the country must decide on ensuring multi-purpose use of jute, high value added production of jute and jute products, as well as more effective marketing and use.
The Jute Diversification Promotion Centre was established in 2002 to help flourish a multi-purpose jute industry, the Minister added.
He mentioned that the government is engaged in producing and exporting raw jute and jute goods, fixing fair price of jute as well as ensuring good business environment.
The centre has created scope for production of high value added multi-purpose jute products, its marketing and distribution through high-value diversification of the Golden Fibre.
As a result, the organisation has been able to play significant role the country’s socio-economic development.
Among others, Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi and acting Secretary of the Ministry Mohammad Delwar Hossain were present.
