The Senate proposed the new budget for the next fiscal year during its annual session at the Sir Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban in the afternoon with DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.
As per the new budget, the university will spend Tk 40.80 crore for research sector which is 5.4 percent of the total budget, 55.82 percent for salaries and pensions of teachers and staff, 21.19 percent for goods and services, 1.31 percent for special donations and 21.68 percent for others.
DU Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin placed the budget along with the Tk 761.55 cr revised budget for the fiscal year of 2018-19.
“We’re hopeful of arranging Tk 694.65 crore from the University Grants Commission for the next year’s budget and Tk 70 crore will come from the university’s own sources. The budget is likely to have a deficit of Tk 45.77crore,” he said.
DU VC Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman said, "This is a glorious day for Dhaka University as the Senate session is full after 1993 with the participation of Ducsu representatives after long three decades."
General Secretary of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Golam Rabbani urged the Syndicate to increase the allocation for the research sector.
He also proposed modernising the Dhaka University library complex to ensure proper education environment.
