“The EC has decided to arrange the polls to the two city corporations (Dhaka South and Dhaka North) on the same day in January,” he told reporters after a meeting of the commission on Sunday.
The EC Secretary said Dhaka North City Corporation will be eligible to go to polls from November 15, while Dhaka South City Corporation from November 18.
As per the law, the EC is obliged to arrange the election to any city corporation within the 180 days before the expiry of its five-year tenure.
He said the entire elections to the two city corporations will be held using electronic voting machines instead of the traditional ballot papers.
Alamgir said the elections to the two bodies will be held on the basis of the existing voter lists.
He said the Election Commission has yet to take any decision over holding the election to Chattogram City Corporation as the city will be eligible for election in February next.
The last elections to DNCC, DSCC and CCC were held on April 28, 2015, but the five-year tenure of the cities began with the first meetings of the respective elected bodies.
The first meeting of the DNCC was held on May 14, 2015, while DSCC on May 17, 2015 and CCC on August 2015.
