Dhaka, Feb 14 (UNB) – The fire that fire broke out at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital on Thursday afternoon was doused after around four hours.
The fire originated at a storeroom on the first floor of a new building of the hospital around 5:50pm, said Rasel, duty officer of the Fire Service central control room.
The fire spread to two other floors despite frantic efforts by the firefighters.
Eighteen firefighting units rushed in and extinguished the flame around 9:30pm, Jewel, who was on duty at the control room at night.
Patients at nearby women and children wards as well as the ICU unit were evacuated safely, Rasel said.
Later, the patients of the hospital were shifted to other hospitals.
Of them, around 180 were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said in-charge of DMCH police camp sub-inspector Bachchu Mia.
It was not still clear what actually caused the fire.
