BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), and Pragatisheel Chhatra Jote (PCJ), an alliance of left-leaning student organisations, raised the demand separately.
But ruling Awami League student wing Bangladesh Chhatra league (BCL) and TSC-based socio-cultural organisations opposed the demand. They urged the authorities to set up the polling booths at residential halls as per the university constitution.
A group of JCD leaders and activists came to Madhur Canteen around 11:30am for the second day and demanded the university authorities ensure a congenial atmosphere.
Demanding rescheduling of Ducsu polls, JCD central President Razib Ahsan said, “A large number of students do not stay at halls and they may not come to vote fearing violence and unrest.
“We urge the authorities to set up polling centres at the academic building for a free and fair election.”
Meanwhile, PCJ brought out a procession from Madhur Canteen and stayed in front of the vice-chancellor’s office for about two hours from 12pm to 2pm, demanding setting up of polling booths outside the halls.
Chhatra Union central General Secretary Liton Nandi said, "The authorities decided to keep polling booths inside the halls accepting BCL’s demand. They have to ensure freedom of speech before setting polling booths inside halls.”
At a press briefing, 'Sammilita Sikkharthi Sangsad', an alliance of TSC-based organisations, and BCL demanded the polling booths be set up at residential halls.
DU debating Society President Rakib Sirazi read out the written statement. "All TSC-based organisations are uncompromised in the question of Liberation War. If any organisation joins hands with anti-Liberation War forces, we will leave them. We appreciate the university authorities for setting polling booths inside the halls."
BCL central President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, General Secretary Golam Rabbani and DU unit General Secretary Saddam Hossain, DU Science Society President Prottasa Shaha, Film Society President Kaiyum Joy, among others, were present at the press conference.
