Police arrested businessman Jamal Uddin Montu, 28, on allegations of torturing two children by confining them for what he termed ‘stealing juice’.
The incident occurred in a store on the west side of Kuthir Hat Bridge under Char Majlishpur union of the upazila.
Police, locals and the victims’ family informed that on Wednesday morning, Jamal Uddin Montu, owner of the store, started beating the two students of class one and two of Kuthir Hat Government Primary School, at around 9 while on their way to school, accusing them of stealing juice from his shop.
At one stage he kept them under lock and key and so they could not attend their ongoing second term examinations.
Later being informed, police rescued the minor girls by breaking the lock and arrested Jamal Uddin Montu from his house.
Arrestee Jamal informed police that the two students were kept under lock and key as he suspected their involvement in stealing juice from his shop while they were returning home after classes on Tuesday.
Headmaster of Kuthir Hat Government Primary School M Abu Tayeb confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, OC of Sonagazi Model Police Station Moyeen Uddin Ahmed also confirmed the incident saying that guardian of one of the girls filed the case.
The accused remains under arrest.
