The members of Bangladesh Association of Parliamentarian on Population and development (BAPPD) were also present in the meeting held at the Speaker’s office the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
During the meeting, different issues, including parliamentary activities, enactment process of laws on child marriage, maternal and child mortality, and population development came up for the discussion, said a Parliament secretariat handout.
The Speaker said the maternal and child mortality rates as well as child marriage have remarkably declined due to the measures taken by the government.
She said the BAPPD leaders have been playing an important role in preventing child marriage, declining maternal mortality, and development of youths.
Dr Chaudhary said the success Bangladesh has attained in the health sector is now commended across the world.
Describing the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad as a unique parliament, the Speaker said the leader of the house and also Prime Minister the leader of opposition and the deputy leader of the house are women.
She said there are now 73 women MPs in the 11th parliament. Of them 50 females are elected from the reserve seats and the rest 23 women MPs were elected with direct votes, she said.
The women are becoming interested to participate in politics, she added.
The visiting APPG delegation on Population, Development and Reproductive Health appreciated the role of parliamentarians in resisting child marriage in Bangladesh.
The delegation considered MPs’ participation in tackling child marriage as exemplary one.
They appreciated Jatiya Sangsad’s role in the areas of youth development, drug control, social safety net activities under the Bangladesh Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development.
Baroness Hodgson and Nicolas Dickens of the APPG and Whip Mahbub Ara Gini were, among others, present.
