Narail, July 13 (UNB)- A youth was arrested from Lohagara uapzila early Saturday for spreading rumour on YouTube over Padma Bridge construction.
A team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Md Shahidul Islam, 25, from Makrail area in the upazila at 12:10 am. A computer, a laptop, a tab and a mobile phone were also seized.
He was spreading rumour using a YouTube channel named Olympusbd.com, said a press release from Rab-6, CPC-3, Jashore.
A case has been filed against him under the Digital Security Act with Lohagara Police Station.
Rumours about the need for human sacrifices for the Padma Bridge project spread on the social media recently, prompting the government to step in.
In a statement on July 9, the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry urged people not to pay heed to the rumour concerning the country’s largest infrastructure project till date.
It also warned that spreading such rumour is a criminal offence.
Work on the 6.15-km bridge started in December 2015. It is expected to boost the GDP by 1.2 percent once it is in operation.
