Dhaka, May 22 (UNB) – Taking a swipe at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for its ‘inaction’ over the reported corruption in the housing project of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, BNP on Wednesday alleged that the statutory body is only being used as a ‘deadly weapon’ to suppress the opposition.
“Though the allegation of massive corruption in Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has generated much discussion among people, the ACC is acting like the deaf and dumb to this end,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, he further said, “Like police and Rab, the ACC is working as a deadly weapon of the government to suppress the opposition parties.”
According to media reports, unusually excess money has been spent on procuring furniture and other things for the officials and employees of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant as a pillow was purchased at Tk 5,957 and the cost for its lifting to a flat was shown Tk 760.
Rizvi said the country’s economy is set to collapse due to the widespread corruption at different financial sectors.
He also said the ruling party men are siphoning off huge money to different countries, including Malaysia, the USA, Canada and Singapore and building second homes there.
The BNP leader said the country’s farmers are not getting the fair prices of their produce due to wrong polices of the government.
He also criticised the Food Minister for his recent comment that the government has no scope to procure paddy directly from farmers as part of its move to ensure fair prices for them.
Rizvi said their party leaders and activists will form human chains at different haat-bazaars at the union level across the country on Thursday demanding the government procure paddy from farmers by ensuring the fair prices of their crop.
