His cremation was held after his fellow journalists, colleagues and near and dears paid their last respects to him.
The body of Ajoy Barua, a pioneer of the country’s sports journalism, long-serving sports editor of the Dainik Sangbad and former vice president of Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association (BSJA), was brought back home from London on Sunday morning.
From Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the body was taken to his long-time workplace Dainik Sangbad office in Purana Paltan and later it was taken to the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) and Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka in the afternoon where large number of journalists, sportsmen and sports organisers gathered to pay their last homage to him.
Former BFUJ President Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, JPC General Secretary Farida Yasmin, JPC Vice-president Omar Faruque, veteran sports journalist Mohammad Quamruzzaman and senior journalists paid their homage to Ajoy Barua on the JPC premises.
Later, Jatiya Press Club, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Chittagong Journalist Forum-Dhaka (CJFD) and a good number of organisations decorated his body with bouquets.
People from the country’s sports arena paid their last tributes to the veteran sports journalist at Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Youth and Sports Secretary of Awami League Harun-ur Rashid, BOA Secretary General Syed Shaheed Reza, NSC Secretary, BCB Director Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Boby, Editor of Dainik Sangbad Altamas Kabir and Executive Editor Kashem Humayan were present at the stadium.
National Sports Council (NSC), Bangladesh Sports Journalist Association (BSJA), Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA), Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF), Bangladesh Archery Federation (BAF), Bangladesh Handball Federation, Sonali Otit Club, Bangladesh Sports Press Association (BSPA), Bangladesh Athletics Federation, Krira Paribar, Dhaka Abahani Club, CCDM, Dhaka Metropolis Football League Committee also paid their homage to Ajoy Barua at the stadium.
Later, his body was taken to Rajarbagh for cremation on completion of funeral formalities at Basabo Buddha Mandir. Local MP Saber Hossain Chowdhury was present at the Mandir to pay his tribute to Ajoy Barua.
