Joypurhat, Sept 18 (UNB) – A female worker died after falling from the under-construction Muktijoddha Complex in the bus stand area of Panchbibi upazila headquarters on Tuesday noon.
The deceased was identified as Monwara Begum, 29, wife of Soharab Hossain of Ganeshpur village in the upazila.
Farid Hossain, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station, said Monwara fell from the under-construction building while working on the 3rd floor, leaving her critically injured.
Later, she was taken to the local upazila health complex where the duty doctor declared her dead, the OC added.
Satkhira, Sept 18 (UNB) – A court here on Tuesday sentenced three people, including the former deputy commissioner of the district and exe-UNO of Ashashuni upazila, to three months’ jail for defying a court order.
Senior Assistant Judge Sabrina Chowdhury passed the order against Abul Kashem Mohammad Mohiuddin, former deputy commissioner of the district, Sushama Sultana, former UNO of Ashashuni upazila and Kamal Hossain, assistant land officer of Ashashuni Sadar.
The court asked them to surrender before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court within one month and it said warrants will be issued for their arrest if they fail to comply with its order.
According to the prosecution, the court on July 26, 2017 issued a prohibitory order on one acre and 68 decimals of land following a petition by Nani Bala Haldar.
But defying the court order, Abul Kashem in collusion with Sushana Sultana helped the accused to go into the disputed land.
Abul Kashem, now the joint secretary of Commerce Ministry, was the deputy commissioner of Satkhira from July 26, 2016 to March 6, 2018 while Sushama Sultana was the UNO of Ashashuni upazila. She is now the additional deputy commissioner of Narsingdi district.
Dinajpur, Sept 18 (UNB) – Workers of Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant on Tuesday threatened to go on indefinite strike from September 24 if the authorities do not recruit local workers within September 23.
They also threatened to block the highway and rail line in the district.
Abu Syed, general secretary of the committee on managing movement for labour rights, a platform of power plant workers, came up with the announcement at a press briefing at Barapukuria Bazar in the noon.
Abu Syed said that local workers have gained experience and also developed their skills by this time working on a temporary basis and they have the right to be appointed at the power plant.
“But the authorities are recounting outsiders,” he alleged.
Bangladesh Trade Union of Phulbari General unit Secretary Nur Alam Siddique, among others, was present at the press conference.
Gopalganj, Sept 18 (UNB) – Separate traditional boat competitions on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja of the Hindu community were held at four places in Kaliganj, Tungipara and Muksudpur upazilas on Tuesday.
Vishwakarma Puja, which is celebrated on 17 September every year, marks the birth anniversary of Hindu god Lord Vishwakarma, who is known as the 'architect of gods'.
Different groups of boatmen from Madaripur, Pirojpur, Narail and Barishal districts with more than hundred boats took part in the competition.
Several thousands of visitors from different districts witnessed the spectacular view when the crews of the boats dressed in colourful T-shirts begin the completion.
Kotalipara’ Kalabari Union Chairman Michael Ojha said the boat competition has been celebrating here for last 200 years and still the locals are witnessing the tradition on the next day of Vishwakarma Puja.
Kotalipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Mahfuzur Rahman said, “The boat competition here is very colourful comparing to those of other districts.”
Support from the local administration will be contained in the future, he added.
Savar, Sept 18 (UNB) – Police recovered three bodies including two readymade garment workers from separate areas of Savar and Ashulia on Tuesday morning.
Aslam, 45, a human hauler driver, hailing from Munshiganj, was beaten to death allegedly by Jewel and Rubel, owner of Jewel Steel and Engineering, over parking his vehicle in front of their shop in Niribili area of Ashulia in the morning, said Rezaul Haque, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Besides, a team of Savar Model Police Station recovered the body of garment worker Parvin Akhter, 22, from the house of Eklas Mia in Joynabari area under Tetuljhora union.
Neighbours spotted the hanging body of Parvin in her room and informed the police.
Later, police recovered the body, said Abdul Awal, officer-in-charge of Savar Police station.
Meanwhile, another readymade garment worker Abdur Rahim was crushed under a vehicle in Singair road area while he was crossing the road.
On information, police recovered the body.
