Chattogram, July 20 (UNB) – Two police officials have been closed to Chattogram police lines on charges of taking extortion from two beauty parlours in the port city.
Sub-inspector Golam Faruk Bhuyan and Assistant Sub-inspector Faisal Hossain Murad of Kotwali Police Station were discharged of their duties, said Mehedi Mohsin, officer-in-charge of the police station.
On July 4, police in a drive arrested 14 girls and four young men on charges of committing unsocial activities in two beauty parlours, Spriha Parlour and Aroma Thai Spa, of Station Road in the port city.
But the two cops took Tk 1 lakh from the owners of the beauty parlours as extortion, alleged Jahangir Alam, manager of Aroma Thai Spa.
However, on the next day, all of the detainees were produced before a local court. Later, they were released after paying a fine of Tk 100 each.
Meanwhile, after investigating the matter, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police decided to withdraw the two police officials, according to sources.
When contacted, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-charge Mehedi Mohsin said the two police officials were withdrawn for administrative reasons.
Brahmanbaria, July 19 (UNB) – Assistant loco master of Jayantika Express train was severely injured in an attack by some miscreants in Brahmanbaria on Thursday.
The victim Md Ali Hossain was admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital soon after the attack, which took place at Brahmanbaria Ral Station.
Railway sources said Ali locked into an altercation with some young men while on trip break at Dhaka Airport Rail Station over boarding the train.
Later, a group of miscreants swooped on while his train reached at the rail station around 2:30pm, leaving him severely injured.
Brahmanbaria Railway Station Master Quamrul Islam said following the incident, the train was stuck at the station for 3 hours, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.
Cumilla, Jul 20 (UNB)- Police on Thursday arrested three nomadic women with 24,000 pieces of contraband Yaba pills carried inside betel nuts from Baldakhali of Daudkandi, Cumilla.
All three belong to Kharia village located in Korhati Union of Louhajang Upazila, Munsiganj. They are Sonia (30), Raj Dulali (28) and Dilruba.
Daudkandi Model Thana Inspector (Investigation) Nurul Islam Majumder said the three women drew police team’s suspicion while searching a bus of Hanif Transportation. Upon searching their bags, wet betel nuts filled with Yaba tablets were found.
240 betel nuts filled with 100 pieces of Yaba each are worth Tk. 72 lac.
A case was filed at Daudkandi Model Thana.
Sirajganj, July 20 (UNB) – A man was killed and 21 others were injured as a bus drove into a roadside ditch on Sirajganj- Belkuchi road at Shamespur area in Belkuchi upazila on Thursday night.
The identity of the deceased could not be known yet.
Abdul Hamid, assistant director of Sirajganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the bus plunged into the ditch after being hit by oil-laden lorry around 4:45pm, leaving 22 people injured while nine passengers of the bus severely wounded.
Later, the injured were taken to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital where the unidentified man succumbed to his injury at night.
Cumilla, July 20 (UNB) – A teacher of Cumilla University has been relieved of the duty of house tutor on Thursday for posting remarks on Facebook in favour of ongoing quota reform movement.
Sources said a group of students of Nazrul hall, including leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), filed a written complaint against Akbar Hossain, house tutor of the hall, for posting remarks in support of quota reform movement on July 3.
Following the complaint, the authorities concerned took the action against the teacher.
A four-member committee headed by GM Moniruzzaman, Dean of Arts Faculty, was formed to investigate the matter on Thursday.
“The committee will start their work in this regard next week,” said Gm Moniruzzaman.
