3 arrested on charge of extortion
Three people were arrested on the charge of extorting Tk 1 lakh by holding 2 college students hostage at the science college intersection area of Sirajganj's Ullapara municipal area.
The arrestees are Babu Talukder, 39, son of Md Tipu Talukder Rifat, 24 son of Mintu Talukder and Rahat 36, son of Md Israfil Talukder.

Ullapara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Nazrul Islam confirmed this information on Saturday afternoon.
He said that Arifur Rahman, a student of Sirajganj Government College, and his girlfriend, a student of the same college, were sitting at a coffee house in the Ullapara Science College area on Thursday evening.

At that time, 6/7 people harassed them and took pictures of them. At one stage, they took them hostage and demanded Tk 2.5 lakh.
Arifur’s family members were forced to give Tk 1 lakh in the face of their demands.

Later, police rushed to the spot after getting a phone call from the national emergency number 999 and conducted a drive in the area at night and arrested them, added the OC.
A case was filed against 5 named and 3/4 unnamed people following a complaint lodged by Arifur.
“Efforts are on to arrest the rest of the culprits,” said the police officer.
One held over 'gang rape' of schoolgirl in Gaibandha
Members of Rapi Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday arrested a young man for his alleged involvement in the gang rape of a schoolgirl six months ago in Gaibandha's Phulchhari upazila.
Members of RAB-13 arrested one of the alleged rapists Roni Mia from Balasighat area of Phulchhari upazila this morning, said a press release.

According to the case statement, the victim, a resident of Radhakrishno Pur, Ramchandrapur Union of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila, left home on April 12, 2023, to elope with her boyfriend.
But her lover left her in Balasighat area of Phulchari upazila. Not finding her lover till evening, she waited in the area. Sensing the opportunity, three youths of the area, took the girl on a boat saying that they will find her lover.

Later, they took her to the deserted pastures of the Brahmaputra River and raped her in turn for two days.
In the morning of April 14, they dropped the girl again in Balasighat area and fled. When the victim explained her ordeal to the people, they called her guardians and handed over the girl to them.
Later, a case was filed at Phulchhari police station against the three rapists following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father Shahed Mia.
The arrestee was handed over to Phulchhari police station this afternoon.
DMP to join team regulating market to curb prices of commodities: DMP Commissioner
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman on Thursday said that the police are active to stop any illegal activities including syndicates in the market.
He also said that the government is always sincere in regulating the market. The team of the DMP is active to root out any syndicate and any bad activity as it has the ability to break any syndicate.
The DMP Commissioner came up with the remarks in a discussion meeting with the representatives of business organisations to determine the reasons for the abnormal increase in the prices of daily necessities and the non-effectiveness of the prices set by the government. The meeting was held at the DMP headquarters in the city.

In his speech, the DMP Commissioner also said that Bangladesh is third in the world in the production of fish, rice and vegetables as well as first in the world in the production of hilsa fish.
“The price condition in the country is not supposed to be like this. What happened was a lack of coordination. If everyone works together, if everyone cooperates, it is definitely possible to control the market,” he said.
The Commissioner also said that the DMP will also participate in the market monitoring along with the Commerce Ministry, the Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection and the city corporations.

Conducted by Joint Commissioner (Operations) of the DMP Biplab Kumar Sarkar, the meeting was also attended by senior officers of DMP, Police Headquarters, various intelligence agencies, Special Branch, Fire Service, Commerce Ministry, Rapid Action Battalion, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka North City Corporation and representatives of business organisations of different thana areas of Dhaka and officers-in-charge of all police stations of the DMP.

Man to die, another gets 3 years imprisonment for killing mother, daughter in Ctg
A court in Chattogram on Thursday sentenced a man to death and another to three years imprisonment for killing a woman and her 10-year-old daughter in 2015.
The condemned convicts were Belal Hossain, 27, son of Mono Mia of Korbanpur village of Cumilla's Muradnagar upazila and Titu Saha,46,son of Nepal Saha of Bakhrabad Ranjit Master Bari area of the upazila.
Judge of Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-6, Sirajam Munira handed down the judgment in presence of two convicts, said additional Public Prosecutor of the Metropolitan Sessions Court Barua Dighu.

The court also fined Belal and Titu Tk 50,000 and 10,000, in default, they will have to suffer six and three more months imprisonment respectively.
According to the prosecution, the victims Nasima Begum and her daughter Rikta Akter Falguni used to live in a rented house in the South Nalapara area of the city.
On May 7, 2015, police recovered the bodies of Nasima Begum and her daughter from the 4th floor of the six-storied building.
Later, a case was filed against unnamed people following a complaint lodged by victim's husband Shah Alam.
On May 27, police arrested Belal Hossain, cousin of Shah Alam.
Accused Belal Hossain confessed that he had a love affair with garment worker Farzana. He killed the duo and looted Tk 111,000, gold ornaments weighing 4 bhori and two mobile phone sets from the house to marry her.
Belal sold the ornaments to Titu Saha, a jeweler's employee in Baklia Ishaq's Pool area of the city.
Based on the information given by Belal, Titu Saha was also arrested by the police.
Later, police submitted the chargesheet to the court on October 25, 2015.
Contempt of court: Ex-chief judicial magistrate gets bail after 3 hours of jail sentence for one month
The High Court on Thursday granted bail to Md Sohel Rana, former chief judicial magistrate of Cumilla for 30 days three hours after he was sentenced to a month in prison for contempt of court.
The HC bench of Justice Md Badruzzaman and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon passed the order on Thursday afternoon.

Sohel Rana's lawyer Shah Manjurul Haque said that due to this bail order, Sohel Rana will not have to surrender before the trial court.
Earlier in the morning, the High Court (HC) sentenced Md Sohel Rana to one month in prison on charge of contempt of court.
Sohel Rana was asked to surrender before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Dhaka within seven days.
Senior advocate Shah Monjurul Haque appeared for Sohel Rana in the court while Advocate Pranay Kanti Roy appeared for the petitioner.

He was charged with contempt of court after he disobeyed the High Court’s order to stay the proceedings of a criminal case. Despite the High Court’s order, Sohel Rana, the former chief judicial magistrate in Cumilla, continued the trial proceedings in violation of the court’s order.
Later, the High Court sought an explanation from the former chief judicial magistrate for disobeying the High Court order.
Rana submitted an explanation to the court in this regard but the High Court expressed dissatisfaction and issued a contempt of court rule against him.
Sohel Rana later sought unconditional apology from the High Court for his acts.

However, the High Court rejected his unconditional apology and sentenced him to 30 days imprisonment.
Sohel Rana is currently attached to the Law Ministry as an additional district judge.
Man hacked dead over ‘drug peddling’ in Faridpur
A 28-year-old man was hacked to death allegedly by a drug peddling gang in Sadar upazila of Faridpur on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was Asaduzzaman Nur alias Turag, son of Alauddin Hawlader of Maddhyo Alipur area in district headquarters.
Police and locals said the body was spotted lying in a tree garden owned by one Jamal Mollah in Govindrapur area in the evening.

Later, police recovered it and sent to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy in Faridpur, said Kotwali police station’s sub-inspector Belal Hossain.
He said that two teams from Criminal Investigation Department and Police Bureau of Investigation have already visited the spot.

A legal process was underway in this regard, he said, assuming that drug peddlers were involved in the killing.
The police official, however, could not provide details about the victim.

None will be spared if court warrant is there against someone: DB Chief
Additional Commissioner and Chief of Detective Branch (DB)of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mohammad Harun or Rashid on Wednesday said no one will be spared, no matter how big leader he is, if there is a warrant for any case.
"If there is a warrant for a case against anyone…no one is being exempted," he said while talking to reporters at his Minto Road office in the city.
Responding to a question, the DB chief said that the job of law enforcement agency is to bring criminals under the law.
He said that law would take its own course and any influence would not work.

The top official of the DB claimed that BNP’s Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie was repeatedly informed about the warrant issued against him, but he did not take bail from court. Two warrants were issued against him in Lakshmipur district.
He was arrested by the Dhanmondi Model Police Station based on the request of the Lakshmipur District Police. Besides, he is also an accused in a case of attacking police in Science lab area of the capital.

Dhanmondi police arrested him for two reasons. Although there is a warrant against him, he did not appear in court and did not take bail, the official said.
He did not appear before court in any case. The BNP leader was arrested by the police because he had a warrant, the DB chief added.
Dhanmomdi thana police arrested Annie from his Dhanmondi residence in Dhaka early Wednesday.

Court sends student who slapped teacher in Chuadanga to Child Development Centre
A Chuadanga court on Tuesday sent the student of Victoria Jubilee Government High School who gained infamy for slapping a teacher to a government-run Child Development Centre in Jashore.
The Chuadanga Women and Children Repression and Prevention Tribunal Judge Musrat Jerin passed the order rejecting a bail plea placed by the student, said the court’s Public Prosecutor Advocate Abu Taleb.

The student of class 10 slapped the teacher for taking away his answer script on grounds of adopting unfair means during an examination on Sunday.
School headmaster Sheikh Safiar Rahman, on behalf of the teacher, lodged a complaint with Sadar police station in this regard, though police later recorded it as a regular case.

Sadar Police Station’ Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman said they recorded the case for obstructing government employees from performing duties by attacking, or using offensive power, and other grounds under sections 332, 353, and 506.
Deputy Commissioner of Chuadanga, Dr Kisinger Chakma, formed a four-member body headed by Additional Commissioner (Education and ICT) Sharmin Akter to investigate the matter and submit a report within three working days.

Also on Tuesday, former and current students of the school held a human chain in front of the institution demanding justice for the teacher in the morning.
They also put a barricade on the Chuadanga-Jibannagar Road for a while to press home their demand, triggering a severe traffic gridlock on both sides of the road. Later, they cleared the road upon intervention by the police.
Odhikar’s Adilur, Nasiruddin secure bail from HC
The High Court (HC) today granted bail to Odhikar’s Secretary Adilur Rahman Khan and Director Nasiruddin Elan, who were sentenced to two years’ of imprisonment in a case over a "distorted report" on the May 5-6, 2013 police action on a Hefajat-e-Islam rally in Dhaka’s Motijheel.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Imdadul Haque passed the order following a petition filed by Adilur and Elan seeking bail.
The court also suspended the order of their fine of Tk 10,000.
Senior Attorney General Mohammad Ali and lawyer Md Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan appeared for Adilur and Elan in the court.
On September 14, the cyber tribunal in Dhaka sentenced Adilur and Nasir for two years in a case filed under Section 57 of ICT Act.

This was the maiden case filed under the ICT Act.
In 2013, Odhikar published a report on its website that claimed 61 people were killed at a Hefajat rally at Shapla Chattar in the capital following a clash between the activists and law enforcement agencies on May 5, 2013.
Detective Branch (DB) Sub-inspector Ashraful Islam filed a general diary at Gulshan Police Station on August 10 of the same year. The GD was later registered as a case.
On September 4 of the same year, DB Inspector Ashraful Alam submitted a charge sheet against Adilur and Nasiruddin to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka.

In 2014, the court framed charges against the two accused and ordered the trial to begin.
The court was supposed to deliver the verdict on September 7 this year after the arguments of the prosecution and the defence ended on August 24.
On that day, the court referred the pronouncement of the verdict to September 14 as its verdict was not ready.

Woman falls to her death from Mouchak-Malibagh Flyover
Police on Monday recovered the body of a young female dancer from under the Mouchak-Malibagh flyover, near the Malibagh Safena Women medical College Hospital in the capital.
Police are unsure however whether it was a case of suicide or murder till filing of this report.
The deceased was identified as Sahida Islam Meem, 21, daughter of late Abu Sayeed of Bagichartek of West Rampura in the capital.
On information, police recovered the body at around 3am, said Sub-inspector (SI) Amena Khanam of Ramna Police Station. The body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy at around 10am.
The exact cause of death will be known after getting the post-mortem report, said SI Amena.

Talking to reporters, Azimun Islam, the mother of the victim, said her daughter went out while talking to one of her male friends over phone around 8:30pm on Sunday night.
"We tried several times to contact her through her phone as she wasn’t returning home. However, she didn’t pick up the phone," said Azimun Islam.
“In the early hours of Monday, the police called and asked us to go to the Ramna police station,” she said. “We went there and identified her body.”
"I believe my daughter was killed," she alleged.

When contacted, Ramna Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasan said the police came to know that the victim was last seen on the flyover locked in an altercation with someone late Sunday night.
She may have committed suicide jumping on the road from the flyover or she may have been pushed off the flyover, the OC said.
However, the actual reason behind her death will be ascertained after investigation, said OC Abul.
