Opportunities will be given if criminals wish to return to normal life: IGP
Claiming that the Sundarbans is freed from pirates, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Wednesday said opportunities will be given once any criminal wants to return to right track.
“We have been working in line with the Prime Minister’s zero tolerance policy against militancy and terrorism,” he said.
He said that the Sundarbans pirates have surrendered, and following that example opportunities will be given if any criminal wants to come back on the right track.
The IGP made the statement while briefing journalists at the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday afternoon.
“We declared the Sundarbans free from pirates because of their surrender. We continue watching whether the pirates are getting involved in crimes after their surrender,” he said.
Mamun said any attempt to break the law and order situation in the country will be dealt with properly.
Regarding the recent recovery of 10 bodies from a floating fishing trawler in the district, the IGP said he instantly ordered Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to look into the matter and sent a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“Some accused have already been detained and they gave confessional statements…while the investigation is also going on,” the IGP said.
Urging people to call the national emergency service 999, the police boss also said that no one will be spared in connection with the recent recovery of the bodies in Cox’s Bazar.
Couple get life sentences for drug peddling in C’nawabganj
A Chapainawabganj court on Tuesday sentenced a husband and wife to life terms in prison in a narcotics case in Sadar upazila of the district filed around two years back.
Chapainawabganj District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Adib Ali also fined the couple Tk 20,000 each, said the court’s Public Prosecutor Nazmul Azam.
Md Fazel, 37, and his wife Jinna Khatun, 30, belong to the Jhoragachi area under Sadar upazila.
According to the case statement, members of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) in a drive recovered 80 grams of heroin from their house on December 10, 2021.
Though the DNC could detain the wife, the husband was absconding. Later he was arrested and a case was filed in this connection.
Investigation Officer Illias Hossain, an inspector of the DNC, submitted the chargesheets accusing them on January 27, 2022.
The court handed down the judgment in presence of both accused after completing all legal procedures on Tuesday, the PP added.
BGB's seizures nationwide in April worth almost Tk 275 crore
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods, arms and drugs worth over Tk 272.31 crore in various drives across the country in April.
The figure is more than double what it was in March, indicating a possible increase in such illegal movement of contraband and other illegal items. BGB reported seizures worth Tk 112.89 crore in March.
The smuggled goods seized between April 1-30 included 11,01,619 pieces Yaba pills, 26.418 kgs crystal meth, 23,437 bottles of phensedyl, 22,209 bottles of foreign liquor, 4,859 beer cans, 1843kg cannabis, 19.905 kgs heroin, 19,292 stimulating injections, 6,248 Senegra tablets, 4,766 Eskuf syrups, 1179 bottles of Cofidil, 13,21,056 different types of medicines and 2,15,850 other drugs - Shariful Islam, public relations officer of the BGB headquarters, said Tuesday.
Besides, 33.799 kgs gold, 16.985kgs silver, three touchstone statues, 2,97,043 pieces cosmetic items, 26,943 pieces sarees, 9,327 3pcs/shirts pcs, 5,417 readymade garments, 3,390 cubic feet of timber, 3,397 tea leaves, 75,490 coal, 9,656 pieces imitation ornaments, 2,198 kg current net, four trucks/covered van, 13 private cars/microbuses, six pickup trucks, 24CNG/battery run auto-rickshaws and 74 motorcycles were seized during the period.
Two pistols, one rifle, four magazines, 31 petrol bombs and 11 rounds of bullets were also recovered during the period.
Besides, legal actions were taken against 137 people smugglers during this period.
Some 26 Bangladeshis and eight Indian nationals were arrested for crossing the border illegally, Shariful said.
Six gets death penalty for killing college teacher in Cumilla
A Cumilla court on Tuesday sentenced six people to death over the murder of a college teacher in Barpara area of the city in 2010.
Comilla Additional District and Sessions Judge Jahangir Hossain passed the order after hearing.
The death row convicts are Nayan, Kamal, Mithun, Jamal, Ilias and Zakir Hossain.
Among them, Ilias and Zakir Hossain were present at the court and the rest were tried in absentia.
Of the total nine accused, two were acquitted and one died during the trial.
On August 10, 2010, a college teacher of Cumilla Barpara area Jahidul Azam Sujon was stabbed to death with sharp weapons by some miscreants.
Sujan's father filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station in Comilla against 11 people the following day.
Municipality-level Jamaat secretary arrested in Gaibandha
Police arrested an absconding Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Palashbari municipality of Gaibandha district on Monday.
Tajul Islam alias Cocktail Tajul is general secretary of Palashbari unit Jamaat-e-Isami and a resident of Paschim Faridpur village under the upazila.
Masud Rana, officer-in-charge of Palashbari police station, said they arrested the Jamaat leader from the municipality after being tipped-off on Monday noon.
Tajul is an accused in several cases including subversive ones, the OC said, adding that the accused was involved with several subversive activities including burning.
Police officer denied bail and sent to jail over trying to rape college student
A Chattogram court on Sunday has rejected the bail plea of former Police Inspector (suspended) of Kasba Police Station Mizanur Rahman in a case filed over an attempt to rape a college student in a hotel room.
At the same time, the court also fixed the date for delivering the judgment on May 10.
Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Justice Ferdous Ara denied the bail petition and announced the date of the verdict in the case after hearing.
According to the case prosecution, on July 12, 2011, an 11th grade student of Ispahani School and College of Chattogram and one of her friends went for a visit to city’s Foy's Lake area when Mizanur Rahman, the then OC (investigation) of Kasba Police Station, took them to a hotel in Chawkbazar in the name of questioning.
There, the OC locked the girl and boy in separate rooms and tried to forcibly rape the girl, but the girl broke the bathroom glass and tried to commit suicide. Later, hotel staff rescued the girl.
On July 16 of that year, the girl's father Humayun Kabir filed a case with Panchlaish Model Police Station against OC Mizan and three others.
Police constable, cohort identified themselves as RAB to snatch items
A mob detained two people including a police constable while they were engaged in robbing an unassuming victim, identifying them as members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi on Saturday night.
Constable Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, 31, who was posted at Damkura police station under Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) and his cohort Md Rabbi, 27.
Of them, the cop hails from Gomastapur upazila in Chapainawabganj and Rabbi from Bhatapara Apple Decorator Morr under Rajpara police station in the RMP.
Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Godagari police station, said identifying themselves as members of Rab, the duo searched a person named Bulbul Ahmed in Chapal area around 8pm on Saturday.
At one stage, they snatched away the mobile phone set from the victim and thrashed him when he wanted to know their identities, Kamrul said.

Hearing screams, the mob rushed to the spot and held the duo and subsequently informed the Rab, the OC said, adding that the Rab took them under their custody and handed them over around 3am.
The Rab filed a case implicating the duo at the Godagari police station on Sunday morning, the police officer said.
During the primary interrogation, the detainees admitted that they went there to rob people, said Riaz Shahriar, commander of the Rab-5.
Casino business: Salim gets 8 yrs jail for amassing illegal wealth
A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced businessman Salim Prodhan, who ran illegal casino business, to eight years’ imprisonment in a case over amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.
Dhaka Special Judge Court-8 Judge Md Badrul Alam Bhuiyan also fined the convict Tk 8 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve seven months’ more in jail.
For acquiring wealth illegally, he was given four years’ imprisonment and fined Tk one lakh, in default of which he will have to serve one month more imprisonment.
The court also sentenced him to four year’s jail with fine of Tk 6 lakh, in default, to suffer six months’ more jail for money laundering.
The court also ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate all his properties.
The court in its observation said the corruption can’t be removed from the society only by verdict.
It urged people not to attend the invitation by corrupt people and marry off their children with such people. Corrupts will have to be boycotted socially, it said.

According to the case statement, Anti-Corruption Commissioner’s Deputy Director (DD) Anwar Prodhan filed the case against Salim on charge of amassing over Tk 12.27 crore illegally on October 27, 2019.
The DD submitted the chargesheets against Salim on January 17, 2021, alleging that he acquired wealth over Tk 57.79 crore beyond the known sources of income and laundered over Tk 21.99 core to Thailand and the US.
On October 31 of the same year, Dhaka Special Jude Court-6 ordered framing the charges against him.
Tough action if anyone tries to create chaos before national election: IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Saturday warned that any attempt to deteriorate the law and order situation before the national election in the country will be dealt with an iron hand.
He came up with the remark while exchanging views with journalists at Sylhet Police lines in the city on Saturday noon.
The IGP said police are capable of controlling the law and order situation in all elections including the city corporation ones.
“Police are ready to perform any duty entrusted by the Election Commission,” he said.

Al-Mamun also said police along with people have been successful in preventing the spread of militancy and terrorism in the country following the Prime Minister’s zero tolerance policy against those.
Talking about rumour, the IGP said legal action will be taken against those who will spread rumour in any situation.
Woman killed ‘by husband’ in Sherpur, husband detained
A woman was killed allegedly by her husband over a family dispute in Sadar upazila of Sherpur early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Asma Akter, 40, daughter of Azizul Islam of Charmocharia union under the upazila.
Police, however, detained Asma’s husband Anis Miah.
Bachhir Ahmed Badal, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said Anis, a brick kiln worker in Dhaka, had been demanding money from his wife for a long time.
A few days back, Anis came home from Dhaka and asked his wife to give money but she failed, leading to an altercation, he said.
The couple locked into an altercation again early Saturday when Anis hit her head with a heavy object, leaving her dead on the spot, the OC said.
Anus called tactfully the national emergency service 999 saying that his wife had committed suicide, the police officer said.
On information, they recovered the body from his house and detained him following his suspicious behaviour, he added.
