‘Criminal’ killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’
A suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Habibpur in Gazipur's Kaliakoir upazila early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Hanif, 30, son of Kanchan Shikdar of Shaheb Rampur of Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district.
Police conducted a drive in the area around 3am, said Sub-inspector Mufti Mahmud, of Kaliakoir Police Station.
Criminals opened fire on police, triggering a skirmish.
At one stage, Hanif was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while the others managed to flee the scene.
Later, he was taken to Kaliakoir Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.
Hanif used to live at his in-law’s house in Kaliakoir and was wanted in 10 criminal cases, said the SI.
Four policemen were injured during the gunfight.
A one shutter gun, one LG gun and three cartridges were recovered from the spot.
2 teenage girls’ bodies recovered in B’baria
Police recovered the hanging bodies of two teenage girls from near Kuti Post office in Kasba upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Sonia, 13, daughter of Billal Mia and Sumaiya, 14, daughter of Babul Mia of Kuti uttarpara area.
Being informed by locals, police recovered the bodies of the girls from an abandoned place in the afternoon, said Lokman Hosain, officer-in-charge of Kasba Police Station.
It is primarily suspected that the girls might have killed themselves by hanging from the tree but police are investigating the incident, said the OC.

One killed in Gaibandha clash over land
A man was killed in a clash over land related dispute at Ratanpur Bunatola village on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Nurunnabi.
Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station, said that there had been a long standing dispute between two neighbours Nurunnabi and Ezadur Rahman over a piece of land.
As a sequel to the dispute, the both groups locked into the clash at night, leaving att least ten people including Nurunnabi injured.
Later, he died on the way to hospital.
Police arrested three people- Entajul Haque, Ashraful Islam and Tuhin Miah- in connection with the incident.
A murder case was filed.
2 killed in Bogura road crash
Two pedestrian were killed after being hit by a pick-up van in in Khamar Kandi area of the district town on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Dewar Hossain, 45, son of late Aftab Hossain and Dulal Hossain, 40, son of late Afsar Ali of the area.
‘Drug trader’ killed in Jashore ‘gunfight’
A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Rajganj area of Manirampur upazila early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Rubel Hosne Shawn, 22, son of Bachchu Hawladar.
Sub-inspector Debasish Biswash of Manirampur Police Station said tipped off, members of Rab -6 conducted a drive in Rajganj area.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the drug traders opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight.
After the gunfight other drug traders managed to flee leaving Shawon bullet- wounded on the spot, the SI said.
The injured were taken to Manirampur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, he added.
Rab seized a foreign pistol, one round of bullet and 63 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup from the spot.
Three cases were filed against the deceased with Manirampur Police Station.

2 killed in Bogura road crash
Two women were killed and three others were injured after a truck hit an auto-rickshaw on Sherpur-Dhaka Highway at Zamuna Para in Sherpur upazila on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Nila Khatun, 35, wife of Sultan Mahmud of Sherua village in the upazila and Arpita Saha, 20, daughter of Jibon Saha of Mathurapur village in Dhunat upazila.
Ratan Islam, station officer of Sherpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the accident took place around 10am when the Dhaka-bound truck hit an auto-rickshaw, leaving Nila dead on the spot and four others injured.
The injured were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where Arpita died later.
Road crashes claim thousands of lives every year and they are mainly blamed on unskilled drivers, unfit vehicles and rundown road condition.
Last year, road crashes left 5,227 people dead and 6,953 injured, according to a road safety advocacy group. In February alone, at least 534 people were killed and 1,169 others injured.

‘Terrorist’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’
A suspected terrorist was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Maheshkhaliapara area of Teknaf upazila early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam alias Arif, 22, son of Nurul Islam. He was an accused in several cases including of murder.
Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said tipped of that a gang of terrorists was staying in the area, a team of police conducted a drive around 3am.
When the team reached the area, the terrorists opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, triggering the skirmish.
After the gunfight, police rescued bullet-wounded Arif.
Later, he was taken to Teknaf upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
The policemen were also injured, claimed the OC.
