BUET students boycott academics to protest BCL being allowed back on campus
The students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology(BUET) have boycotted all sorts of academic activities after witnessing the ruling party's student front, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), staging a return to political activity on the campus.
BUET students have renounced student front politics on behalf of politicals parties on their campus since a group of BCL activists were implicated in torturing a bright and sensitive first year student, Abrar Fahad, till his death over the course of a macabre night on the BUET campus in 2019.
The BCL has since tried sporadically to bring politics back, or political programmes specifically, on the campus but met with resistance from the student body on each occasion, and the latest incident would seem to fall in that line of succession.
On Thursday, BCL president Saddam Hussain along with other central leaders and activists of BCL entered BUET campus where Imtiaz Rahim Rabbi, a BUET student and executive member of BCL central panel, was present and ‘played a vital role’ in facilitating their entry. Thereafter some leaders and activists of newly-formed BCL committees presented floral bouquets to the president.
The general students of BUET marked this entrance of BCL in a group as aimed at communicating their presence on the campus - to test the waters as it were, as part of a conspiracy to revive student politics on the BUET campus.
BUET students wasted no time in staging day-long demonstration on the campus demanding safe campus and strict measures against any BUET students found to have conspired with the BCL leaders.
Hundreds of students joined the demonstration expressing solidarity with the movement from the morning and held a press briefing there, where they declared their opposition to ‘using BUET campus for political motives’, and immediately boycotted all academic activities including the scheduled classes and exams of March 30 and 31.
Their demands include suspending any BUET students involved from halls and departments for violating the university’s regulations; specifically they demand action against 'involved' Imtiaz Rahim Rabbi.
They also asked for safety guarantees for those protesting, the BUET administration’s stance on the incident, safety and security of all the protesting students with assurances in a written format and making sure that they face no harassment. The students also demanded the resignation of the Directorate of Students’ Welfare's leadership, saying it has failed to do its job.

EdUSA hosts Iftar reception for students accepted into US universities
A staggering number of 13,563 Bangladeshi students studied in the United States during the 2022–23 academic year, a 28 percent increase over the previous year (2021-2022).
The number of Bangladeshi students studying in the US is now at an all-time high, and Bangladesh ranks 13th worldwide in terms of international students heading to the United States.
5 US universities visit Bangladesh to share study opportunities
This was revealed during an iftar reception at the EMK Center in the capital’s Gulshan on Sunday.
However, a majority of general students and guardians have a common perception that students from Bangla mediums and HSC qualifiers have to hurdle through a rigorous process to get acceptance into US institutions, eventually leading them to pursue postgraduate opportunities rather than pursuing their undergraduate studies in the US.
Applications can be made to 25 US universities through GRC
“I also had that perception until I applied for my undergraduate programmeme in the US,” Sazia Kamal, who completed her HSC in 2022 from Rajuk Uttara Model College and is going to the University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) BS programme in Biochemistry, told UNB.
Bangladeshi students have the option to pursue their undergraduate degrees in the United States through some easy and specific processes, without any difficulties. However, parents and other general students, mostly those from the Bengali medium, are generally not aware of this option.
EdUSA (Education USA), the US government’s only official source of information on higher education, is actively addressing this issue, working closely with high school counsellors and assisting qualified students to achieve their goal of higher education in the United States. This includes providing guidance on the visa process and reviewing their applications.

“The entirety of the online undergrad application process is very easy, and anyone can apply to their selected institutions based on their preference of the majors with their Bangladeshi higher secondary results and the IELTS scores,” Sazia told UNB. She is a recipient of the International Outreach Award, the primary scholarship for international undergraduate students from the university.
The information was echoed by another successful applicant, Prottoy Roy, who completed his A Level from the SFX Greenherald International School. “I applied for the undergraduate programme in molecular biology at Brown University, and resources from EduUSA and the EMK Center helped me in the process.”
Rookshana Begum and Mohammad Shahnewaz, who joined the event on Sunday from Chattogram with their daughter Afra Nawar from the Presidency International School, said the high demand for a US degree is due to the exceptional quality of the US education system and the value placed on an American degree around the world, and this has been the motivation for them to send their daughter to the University of California (UCLA),”Afra completed her A Level in 2023 and received a full scholarship to pursue her undergraduate degree in psychobiology at UCLA.
The Iftar and dinner reception on Sunday hosted 30 students who recently obtained the opportunity to pursue their undergraduate dreams in the United States this year. Students and parents from 16 institutions in Dhaka and Chattogram joined the reception, with four being Bangla medium and 12 being English medium institutions.
Sharlina Hussain-Morgan, Public Engagement Director at the US Embassy in Bangladesh, and Stephen F Ibelli, Public Diplomacy Counsellor of the US Embassy, spoke at the event.
ACC begins probe into irregularities in IU mega project
The Anti-Corruption Commission has started an investigation into allegations of embezzlement of Tk 6 crore under the mega project of Islamic University in Kushtia.
ACC started probing the issue three months after an anonymous letter was sent to the university administration and the ACC Kushtia district office regarding the embezzlement.
A letter signed by ACC Kushtia’s assistant director and investigating officer M Saidur Rahman, was issued in this regard on Thursday night.
An allegation of embezzling Tk 6 crore 25 lakh from third phase development work of the university’s second administration building under the mega project was brought against some unnamed unscrupulous people including IU acting chief engineer, executive engineer, supervising engineer, project director, former and current leaders of the university BCL unit submitting two fake bills.
ACC Kushtia district office sought information from the university administration on the related projects for the purpose of investigation.
They also sought the latest bills of the second administration building of the third phase development project of the university.
They requested the university administration to take necessary measures to send the original copies of the record to the Anti-Corruption Commission Kushtia district office, the letter said.

Earlier, an anonymous letter came to the university administration in November last year. According to the letter, the contractor made a false bill of more than Tk 6 crore in the fifth bill of the second administrative building of the university. The bill and related documents were attached to the letter.
Taking the letter into consideration, IU vice chancellor Professor Shaikh Abdus Salam formed a probe body headed by IU Islamic history and culture department Professor M Jahangir Hossain to look into the matter in December last year.
After three months, the investigation committee submitted its reports on March 9 and found the irregularities mentioned in the anonymous letter.
