3 to die for murder in Sylhet
A Sylhet court on Wednesday sentenced three people to death and one to life term imprisonment in a murder case.
The court also ordered also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each .
The condemned convicts are Syeda Rakha Begum, Ali Hossain and Rezwan alias Redwan and the lifer is Khaliquzzaman Layek.

Among the accused, Syeda Rakha Begum and Khaliquzzaman Layek were tried in absentia.
According to the case statement, Sadiqur Rahman Sadiq and Syeda Rakha Begum had been living together (without getting married) at a house in Noagaon area of Sylhet Sadar upazila.
As Sadiq’s family refused to accept their relationship Rakha with her companions killed him in October, 2015.
Man who incited 2019 Borhanuddin riots sentenced to 8 years in jail
A Barishal court on Sunday sentenced a Hindu man to eight years in jail for hacking a Facebook profile to post content hurting religious sentiments and deteriorating law and order at Borhanuddin upazila in Bhola in 2019.
Barishal Cyber Tribunal Judge Golam Faruque passed the order.
Md Istak Ahmed Rubel, Special Public Prosecutor of the court said accused Bapan Das has been sentenced to jail terms under three sections of the penal code and the punishment will continue simultaneously.

“Under section 34 he got eight years in jail with a fine of Tk 3 lakh, under section 28 (1) he got 2 years in jail and fine of Tk 1 lakh and under section 31 (1) he got four years in jail with Tk 1 lakh fine,“ said PP Istak Ahmed.
On October 18, 2019, a man named Biplab Chandra filed a general diary with Borhanuddin police station saying his Facebook profile named Biplab Chandra Shubho was hacked from which activities hurting religious sentiment were conducted.
On October 20, four people were killed during a clash between police and agitated people of Muslim community over the incident at Borhanuddin Eidgah ground.

Two more cases were filed in this regard which are still under trial.
On January 26, 2020, police arrested a hacker named Bapan Das after finding his involvement with the incident using information technology.
The court recorded Bapan Das’s confessional statement regarding the crime under section 164 and on August 1, last year police filed a charge sheet against him in this case.
JMB man gets 5 yrs imprisonment in Chattogram
A Chattogram tribunal on Tuesday sentenced a member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 5 years jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The convict was Rakibul Hasan Jony, 22, a resident of Sadarghat area of Chattogram port city and son of Jashim Uddin of Cumilla district.

Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal Judge Abdul Halim handed down the judgment and fined the convict Tk 20,000.
According to the prosecution, a team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested Rakibul and recovered 10 grenades from his house in Sadarghat area on January 1, 2018.
Besides, two suicide vest, two mobile phone sets, two maps were also recovered from his possession.

JMB man jailed for 20 years in explosives case
A Khulna Court on Monday sentenced a member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 20 years imprisonment in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
The convict is Ziaur Rahman alias Sagar alias Sabbir, Khulna divisional chief of JMB.

Khulna Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Ashikur Rahman handed down the verdict.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment, said Lawyer Kazi Sabbir Ahmed of the court.
According to the case, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Ziaur Rahman from Miapara of Khulna on December 29 in 2005. During the interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in militant activities.
Based on his information, a large quantity of explosives was recovered from a room of a hostel at Daulatpur in Jashore.

Later, on December 30 of the year, a case was filed at Daulatpur Police Station under the Explosive Substances Act.
On January 19, 2006, Jahedul Haque Sarkar, sub-inspector (SI) of Daulatpur Police Station, submitted a chargesheet against him.
Two men to remain in prison until death for killing a 7-year-old girl
A Rangpur court on Tuesday sentenced two men to imprisonment until death for killing a seven-year-old girl for ransom money nine years ago, court officials said. Rangpur Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Mohammad Rokonuzzaman handed down the sentence to Russel Mia and Abul Kalam of Pirgacha upazila of Rangpur district. Russel was 19 and Kalam 20 when they committed the crime.

According to the prosecution, the convicts kidnapped Ria Akter, daughter of Abdur Rahim of Paran village in Pirgachha upazila on December 24 in 2013 and kept her under lock and key in an unknown place. Later, they made a phone call to Rahim and demanded Tk 4 lakh as ransom. That time Rahim lodged a general diary with Pirgachha Police Station. On January 19 the same year police arrested Russel after tracking his mobile phone and following his confessional statement they arrested Salauddin. Police recovered the decomposed body of Ria from a toilet of a house.

Noakhali housewife molestation: 13 get 10 years jail
A Noakhali court on Tuesday sentenced 13 people to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment in a case over torturing a housewife after undressing her at Joykrishnapur village in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district in September last year.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Jainal Abedin handed down the verdict.

The convicts were fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer three months more imprisonment.
The convicts are Delwar Hossain Dulu, Noor Hossain Badal, Abdur Rahim, Mohammad Ali alias Abul Kalam, Israfil Hossain Miah, Moyeen Uddin Sazu, Shamsuddin Sumon, Abdur Rob Chowdhury, Mostafizur Rahman, Jamal Uddin, Noor Hossain Russel, Mizanur Rahman Tareq and Anwar Hossain Sohag.
Among them, Abdur Rob, Mostafizur Rahman, Jamal Uddin and Mizanur Rahman were tried in absentia.
Earlier on October 4 in 2020, the victim filed the case against nine people of ‘Delwar Bahini’ at Begumganj Model Police Station.
The case was later handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). The PBI farmed charges against 13 persons in the case.
The victim was molested by some local miscreants of ‘Delwar Bahini’ at Ward No. 9 of Eklashpur Union on September 2 in 2020.
The incident came to light after a video of the barbaric incident went viral on the internet.

The miscreants tortured the housewife after undressing her and captured it on phone. The video sent a shock wave throughout the country, triggering protests everywhere.
The victim filed two cases accusing nine people 33 days after the incident.
One of the cases was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and another under the Pornography Control Act.
Earlier on October 4, the court sentenced Delwar an Abul Kalam to life imprisonment in a case filed over raping the woman.
13 to die in Aminbazar students' lynching case
A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced 13 people to death and 19 others to life imprisonment for beating to death six students at Aminbazar in Savar on the outskirts of the capital in 2011.
Judge Ismat Jahan of the Dhaka Second Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court handed down the punishment to the 32 convicts. The court, however, acquitted 25 others as the police and the prosecutors failed to prove the charges against them.

Earlier, on November 22, a Dhaka court fixed December 2 as the judgment day in the case.
In the early hours of July 17, 2011, the six students were beaten to death by an angry mob that branded them as robbers.
Three of the deceased were students of Mirpur Bangla College, while the others had been studying at Tejgaon College, Bangladesh University of Business and Technology, and Maple Leaf International School, respectively, in the capital.

Savar Model police filed a murder case against a total of 60 people in connection with the killings. And on January 7, 2013, investigators pressed charges against the 60 accused.
The trial in the case started on July 8, 2013, after a court framed charges against the accused. Of the accused, three people died during the course of the trial.
Ex-CJ Sinha gets 11 years in graft case
A special court in Dhaka on Tuesday sentenced former chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha to 11 years’ imprisonment in a case filed over laundering Tk 4 crore.
Judge of the Dhaka Special (Court-4) Sheikh Nazmul Alam Khan handed down the verdict.
The court also fined S K Sinha Tk 45 lakh, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment.

It also ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate Tk 78 lakh from his bank account.
The court also sentenced eight other accused in the case to different jail terms while acquitted two others -- Md Shahjahan and Niranjan Chandra Saha --as allegations brought against them were not proved.
Former managing director of Farmers Bank AKM Shamim got four years’ jail with a fine of Tk 50,000 while Santri Roy Simi and Ranjit Chandra Saha were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment each with a fine of Tk 10,000.
The remaining four accused -- Gazi Salahuddin, senior executive vice president and former head of credit division of the bank, Swapan Kumar Roy, first vice president (Credit division), Shafiuddin Askari Ahmed, vice president Md Lutful Haque -- were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment each and fined Tk 25,000 each.

On July 10, 2019, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case accusing former chief justice SK Sinha and 10 others of accumulating illegal wealth and laundering Tk 4 crore.
Earlier, the judgment in the graft case was scheduled to be delivered on October 5 and then it was deferred to October 21 as the judge was on leave.
On August 29, seven of the 11 accused in the case pleaded "not guilty".
They are Mahbubul Haque Chisty, former audit committee chairman of Farmers Bank, former managing director of the bank AKM Shamim, first vice-presidents Swapan Kumar Rat and Md Lutful Haque, and former senior executive vice presidents (SEVPs) Gazi Salahudiin, Md Shahjahan and Niranjan Chandra Saha.
On August 24, the defence lawyers grilled the investigating officer of the case, Benazir Ahmed, also the director of the ACC. Twenty-one witnesses had testified in the case.

On September 25, 2019, the anti-graft body summoned five officials of Farmers Bank for interrogation over the deposit of Tk 4 crore in CJ Sinha’s account with the Supreme Court branch of Sonali Bank.
On December 10, 2019, the investigation officer in the case submitted a chargesheet against the 11 accused. On August 13, 2020, a court framed charges against the 11, including Sinha.
SC directs to deduct custody time from total jail term given to convicts
The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that the time a prisoner spends in custody since arrest to judgment will be deducted from the period of imprisonment to which a convict is sentenced.
The Ministry of Home Affairs was directed to make necessary arrangements in this regard.
A bench of five justices led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order during a virtual hearing on the appeal challenging the High Court’s order of imprisonment for life to a convict named Younus Ali.
The court has ordered to send the order document to the home and law ministries and also directed to release Younus Ali after he served his jail term.

Lawyer Golam Abbas Chowdhury Dulal appeared for Younus Ali while Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath stood for the state.
Lawyer Golam Abbas Chowdhury Dulal said his client has already spent 26 years behind the bars though according to the order of appellate division and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) he should have been released by now.
Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath said Younus Ali was given life sentence in a case from the lower court which was later upheld by the High Court.
According to section 35 A (1) of CrPC the time a convict passed in custody during the trial period of a case will be deducted from the sentence of imprisonment which was not mentioned in the sentence passed on the case of Younus Ali, said the deputy attorney general.
Earlier, in the case of Ataur Rahman Mridha versus the state, the appellate division said life imprisonment means rigorous imprisonment for 30 years and a convict will get 7.5 years’ remission facility according to law.

In 2017, in a notification issued by the High Court it was said that if multiple criminal cases are under trial against an accused, the time he/she spent in jail custody will be deducted from the total sentence of imprisonment in each case verdict.
Though in most cases the direction is not implemented, said the DAG.
Man to die for killing wife in Khulna
A court in Khulna on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2020.
The convict is Rafiq Sheikh of Fakirhat upazila in Bagerhat district. The court also fined him Tk 50,000.

The court also sentenced Rafiq to seven years imprisonment under another section of the case and fined him Tk 25,000, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.
Khulna District and Sessions Judge Mashiur Rahman Chowdhury handed down the verdict.
According to the prosecution, Mariam Begum, 25 of Fakirhat upazila got married to Rafiq in 2017 and the couple used to fight over family .
Rafique used torture Mariam suspecting that she had extramarital affair.
Rafique took Mariam to a betel leaf field where he killed her hitting with a brick and set her ablaze by pouring kerosene on August 12, 2020.
Police recovered the charred body of Mariam, two days after the incident on August 15.

Halima Begum, mother of the victim, lodged a complaint with Rupsha Police Station.
A case was filed against four people in this connection.
On December 31, 2020, police submitted a chargesheet accusing Rafique.
After examining the records and 15 witnesses, Khulna District and Sessions Judge handed down the verdict.
