Western Asian Youth Chess: Bangladesh Chess team leaves Dhaka for Maldives
An 18-member Bangladesh chess team left Dhaka for the Maldives Wednesday to participate in the Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022 for under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 age groups' open and girls' division, starting Thursday in Ukulhas Island of the Maldives.
The Bangladesh team of 14 players will compete in the meet to be played in three methods – standard, rapid and blitz.
The players are CM Manon Reja Neer, WFM Noshin Anjum (open under-18), Kazi Zarin Tasnim (girls' under-18), Mohammad Saker Ullah (open under-16), Jannatul Ferdousi (girls' under-16), Md Sajidul Haque and Syed Ridwan (open under-14), Ishrat Jahan Diba (girls' under-14), Sakline Mostafa Sajid (open under-12), Aiyan Rahman (open under-10), Warsia Khusbu (girls' under-10) and Raiyan Rashid Mughda and Safayet Kibria (open under-8).
The winners of the championship will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

The participants of the competition also have opportunities to gain direct titles of the international master, women's international master, FIDE master, female FIDE master, candidate master and female candidate master.
Earlier, the Asian Chess Federation appointed Md Haroon Or Rashid, the International Chess Arbiter of Bangladesh, as the chief arbiter of the championship, and he reached the Maldives Tuesday.

AFC Cup: Bashundhara Kings to play Maziya S&RC of Maldives on Wednesday
Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) champions Bashundhara Kings will start their Group D campaign of the AFC Cup Football' 2022 taking on Maziya Sports & Recreation Club of the Maldives on Wednesday.
The match will kick-off at 9 pm (local time) at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata.

Earlier, two Indian contenders, ATK Mohun Bagan FC:of Kolkata will face Gokulam Kerala FC in the opening Group D match of the AFC Cup at 5 pm local time at the same venue.
Last two times BPL champions Bashundhara Kings, which reached Kolkata last Saturday (May 14), to play the group matches of the AFC Cup, will face ATK Mohun Bagan on May 21 and Gokulam Kerala FC on May 24 in their remaining Group D matches.
ATK Mohun Bagan of Kolkata qualified for the group stage of the AFC Cup eliminating Dhaka Abahani Limited by 3-1 goal in a play-off match in Kolkata on April 19 last..
A total of 38 leading club teams of Asia, split into 10 groups, will battle for the coveted club crown eyeing on the final on October 22 next.

Asia Cup Football, which was introduced in 2004, also offered a substantial prize money this time with the champion team getting USD 1.5 million and the runners-up will get USD 750,000.in addition to prestigious continental trophy.
South Asian TT: Bangladesh beat Pakistan, Maldives
Bangladesh earned convincing wins against Pakistan and the Maldives on the first day of the South Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championship that began on Monday (May 9) in the Maldives capital Male.
In a league basis competition, Bangladesh beat Pakistan by straight 3-0 sets in the first match and defeated hosts Maldives by 3-1 sets in the day's 2nd match.

In the next two matches, Bangladesh will play Sri Lanka and Nepal, informed vice president of Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation Khondakar Hasan Munir from Male.

Rear Admiral Azad new Bangladesh envoy to Maldives
The government has appointed Rear Admiral S M Abul Kalam Azad as the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Republic of Maldives.
Rear Admiral Azad was commissioned in the Bangladesh Navy on July 1, 1987, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
In his long and distinguished career, he has served in various staff, instructional and command appointments at different levels.

He received the prestigious "Nou Gaurab Padak" for his professional excellence and exceptional service in the Bangladesh Navy.
Before joining the Foreign Ministry, he was serving as the Commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet.

Momen discusses ways to enhance cooperation with Maldives
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen had conversations with Maldivian Health Minister Ahmed Naseem over phone on Tuesday; and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.
They also discussed cooperation between the two countries in the health sector, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two ministers lauded the recent “successful” State visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the Maldives.

Maldives hopeful of continued cooperation with Bangladesh in maritime domain
Maldivian Defence Minister Mariya Didi has expressed hope for continued defence and security sector cooperation with Bangladesh especially in the maritime domain.
Chief of Naval Staff of Bangladesh Navy Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal paid a courtesy call on Defence Minister Mariya Didi recently and discussed issues of mutual interest.
During the meeting held at Bandaara Koshi, Minister Mariya noted the "warm sisterly relationship" between the Maldives and Bangladesh.

PM returns home from Maldives
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday returned home wrapping up her six-day bilateral visit to the Maldives.
A special VVIP flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport here at 5:30pm, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told UNB.
Earlier, the aircraft departed Velana International Airport, Male at 1:20pm (local time).

On December 22 last, the Prime Minister went to the Maldives at the invitation of the county's President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
During her visit, Sheikh Hasina had separate meetings with Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Vice-President Faisal Naseem, Speaker of its national parliament Mohammed Nasheed and Chief Justice Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan.
Three instruments -- one agreement on avoidance of double taxation and two MoUs on cooperation in health and sports sectors—were signed.
A joint communique was issued following the bilateral talks and the handing over ceremony of the instruments.

The flight is scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport here around 6:00pm on Monday.
