Global Covid cases surpassed 521 million
The overall number of Covid cases has surpassed 521 million amid a rise in new infections in parts of the world.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 521,107,516 while the death toll from the virus reached 6,263,192 Sunday morning.
The US has recorded 82,437,716 cases so far and 999,570 people have died from the virus in the country, the data shows.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 43,119,112 on Sunday, as 2,858 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.
Besides, nice deaths from the pandemic registered across the country since Sunday morning took the total death toll to 5,24,201 .
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh reported 22 Covid cases in 24 hours until Saturday morning which took the total caseload to 1,952,979.
With no new Covid death reported during the period for the 24th consecutive day, the total fatalities from the pandemic remained unchanged at 29,127.

The daily test positivity rate slightly increased to 0.55 per cent from Friday's 0.45 per cent as 3,965 samples were tested, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
On Friday, the number of cases was lower as only 18 new cases were reported.
The mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 percent. The recovery rate rose to 97.24 percent as 220 patients recovered during this period.

Bangladesh reported 10 Covid cases in 24 hours until Saturday morning which took the total caseload to 1,952,776.
With no new Covid death reported during this period the country's total fatalities from the pandemic remained unchanged at 29,127.

The daily test positivity rate declined to 0.38 per cent from Friday’s 0.55 per cent as 2,656 samples were tested, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
On Friday, the number of cases was higher as 19 new cases were reported.
The mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 percent. The recovery rate rose to 97.16 percent as 217 patients recovered during this period.
In April, the country reported only five Covid-linked deaths and 1,114 new cases, while 14,100 patients recovered from the disease, according to the DGHS.
Among the five deaths during the period, two were unvaccinated patients while three were vaccinated with two doses of the Covid vaccine.

7 die in India building fire
Seven people were charred to death and five others injured in a fire that broke out at a residential building in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh early on Saturday morning.
Officials said the blaze started around 4am in the basement of the building in Swarn Bagh colony of Madhya Pradesh's Indore city, 200 kms from state capital Bhopal, and soon engulfed the entire structure.
Five fire tenders were pressed into service and it took them nearly four hours to douse the flames.
"At the time, all the occupants of the building were fast asleep. Seven burnt bodies were recovered by the firemen from the building. Nine people were also rescued, of which five have been hospitalised," a senior fire officer told the local media.
Police claimed to have detained the building's owner Ansar Patel in connection with the fire. "He has been booked for causing death by negligence for not installing any fire safety system in the building," a police officer said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took to Twitter to offer his condolences.
"I pray to God to give place to the departed souls at his feet and give strength to the family members to bear this deep sorrow and to give speedy recovery to the injured," the Chief Minister tweeted.
A probe has been ordered into the fire, the fire officer said. "Preliminary probe points to an electrical short-circuit in the basement."

Building fires are common in India, and are often attributed to poor maintenance and absence of basic fire safety systems. A number of people die in such fires every year.

Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh reported four new Covid cases in 24 hours till Thursday morning which took its total caseload to 1,952,747.
With no new Covid deaths reported during this period, the country's total fatalities from the pandemic remained unchanged at 29,127, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The daily positivity rate dropped to 0.18%, the lowest since the pandemic broke out here, from Wednesday’s 0.60% as 2,226 samples were tested.

The recovery rate rose to 97.02 per cent with the recovery of 334 more patients during the 24-hour period.

The overall number of Covid cases has surged past 509 million amid a rise in new infections in parts of the world.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 509,166,036 while the death toll from the virus reached 6,216,800 Sunday morning.
The US has recorded 80,971,925 cases so far and 991,231 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
India's COVID-19 tally rose to 43,057,545 on Sunday, as 5,120 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal Health Ministry's latest data.
This is the third consecutive day when the number of new cases has breached the 2,000-mark, after hitting low for the past several months.
Besides, there were 77 new deaths due to the pandemic since Saturday morning, taking the death toll to 522,193.

Bangladesh logged 72 fresh Covid cases with two more deaths in 24 hours till Wednesday morning.
The fresh numbers took the country’s total caseload to 19,51,504 while the death toll to 29,122.
On Tuesday, the number of infections was lower as 69 new cases were reported.
The daily positivity rate increased a bit to 0.89 per cent from Tuesday’s 0.75 per cent after testing 8,050 samples during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The deaths of two people--a man and a woman-- were reported from Rajshahi and Khulna divisions.
Besides, the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 per cent.
The recovery rate rose to 96.36 per cent with the recovery of 876 more patients during the 24-hour period.

Napa deaths: DGDA claims syrup was safe
The batch of Napa syrup, which has been at the centre of controversy after the death of two children in Ashuganj, was found safe and standard, said officials of Director General of Drug Administration (DGDA) on Monday.
The DGDA collected samples of the syrup, a product of Beximco Pharmaceuticals, from the shop, from where the medicine was purchased. After testing eight samples of the three batches the unvestigators found the quality of the medicine accurate, said the DGDA source.
DGDA Director General Major General Mohammad Yousuf said this at a press briefing held at its office.
All the reports of eight bottles came out positive and no harmful substance was found in the tested samples, he said.
Replying to a question, whether the medicine was fake, Yousuf, said the used bottle of syrup is with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the actual reason behind the deaths of two children will be known after getting forensic report.

Already two probe bodies have been formed in this connection while samples of the syrups of the same batch have been collected and sent for testing, he added.
On Thursday night, two siblings named Yasin Khan,7, and Morsalin Khan,5, son of Ismail Khan, a brick kiln worker, died after given Napa syrup at their home for high fever.
It was bought from a local ‘Ma Pharmacy’ owned by Main Uddin and the syrup had an expiry date mentioned till 2023.
The children were discharged after being given primary medications at District Sadar Hospital. Yasin died on the way home, and Morsalin after reaching home, the family said.
Covid in Bangladesh: Positivity rate reaches 32.37% with 15 more deaths
Bangladesh logged 15 more Covid-linked deaths with 14,828 fresh cases in 24 hours till Monday morning.
The daily positivity rate rose to 32.37 per cent from Sunday’s 31.29 per cent after testing 45,807 samples, according to the Directorate general of health Services (DGHS).
The country logged its peak daily positivity rate of 32.55% on July 24 last year reporting 6,780 cases and 195 deaths.
Bangladesh last saw 15,776 cases on August 3, last year with 235 deaths.

The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 28,238 while the caseload mounted to 1,699,964 on Monday.
Of the 79 deaths recorded from January 17 to January 23, some 35.4 per cent received Covid vaccines while 64.6 percent did not, the DGHS mentioned.
Comorbidities among the deceased patients declined 12.7 per cent this week compared to the previous one. Comorbidity means the simultaneous presence of two or more diseases or medical conditions in a patient.
Among the new deceased, nine were men and six women.
Six cases were reported in Dhaka division while three in Mymensingh, two in Sylhet and one each in Chattogram, Rajshahi Khulna, and Barishal divisions.

Meanwhile, the mortality rate further declined to 1.66 per cent.
However, the recovery rate also declined further to 91.64 per cent with the recovery of 998 more patients during the 24-hour period.

Bangladesh experiences alarming week as Covid escalates
The Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh has taken an alarming turn again with health authorities recording 28,456 infections along with 49 deaths linked to it during the last seven days till Monday morning.
Since January 1, the country saw 38,478 infections and 82 deaths till Monday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The surge in cases becomes more evident from the daily case positivity rate which sharply rose to 22.88 per cent on Monday from the reported 8.53 per cent on January 10.
Meanwhile, the recovery rate was showing a gradual fall as it stood at 95.62 per cent on Monday which was at 97.19 per cent just a week ago.

During the period, the fatality rate, however, declined a bit to 1.73 per cent from 1.76 per cent, which can be considered as a matter of relief till now.
