2 killed in Barishal road crash
Two people were killed in a head-on collision between a three-wheeler and a motorcycle in Barishal's Hijla upazila on Monday.
The deceased were identified as motorcyclist Yasin, 15, a 9th grade student of Mahishkhola Senior Dakhil Madrasa and son of Sattar Palban of Guabaria union, and the three-wheeler's driver Quddus, 30, son of Hashem Hawladar of Charmemania village of Memania union.
The accident occurred on Monday afternoon on a road west of Kauria Bazar in Guabaria Union of the upazila.

According to witnesses, the three-wheeler was heading from Kauria Bazar to Muladi. After crossing the road it collided head-on with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. Madrasa student Yasin died on the spot and the injured driver died at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment.
Hijla police OC Yunus Mia said the bodies were sent to the morgue for autopsy.

Zelenskyy says 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers killed
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says about 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in fighting since the start of the Russian invasion.
Speaking at a news conference Saturday, Zelenskyy said it would take Russia to carpet-bomb the Ukrainian capital and kill its residents to take the city.

He added that “if that is their goal, let them come."
Zelenskyy said that “if they carry out carpet bombings and wipe off the historic memory of the entire region, the history of Kyivan Rus, the history of Europe, they could enter Kyiv.”

Ukraine claims another Russian general killed
A Ukrainian official says that another Russian general has been killed in fighting.
Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, said Saturday that Russian Maj. Gen. Andrei Kolesnikov was killed in action during the fighting over Mariupol. He would be the third Russian general to die in the war, according to Ukrainian officials.

Kolesnikov’s death wasn’t confirmed by the Russian military, which has kept a tight lid on information about its losses.
Previously, unofficial Russian sources confirmed the death of one Russian general.
The death of Maj. Gen. Andrei Sukhovetsky, the commanding general of the Russian 7th Airborne Division, was confirmed by his colleague and the officers’ association in southern Russia. The death of another general, Maj. Gen. Vitaly Gerasimov, wasn’t confirmed by any Russian sources.

Child killed, parents injured as truck hits bike in Natore
A seven-year-old girl died while her parents sustained injuries when their bike was hit by a speeding truck in Natore on Saturday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as Fahima, a first grader and daughter of Faruk Hossain, a businessman.
The accident occurred in Natore's Baraigram upazila when Faruk, his wife Dilara and their child were returning home on their bike this morning.

Bonpara Highway Police OC Keramat Ali said, "The family was returning home at Hoibatpur in Natore Sadar upazila from Bonpara of Baraigram upazila when the truck crashed into their bike in Kalikapur."

The three fell off the bike in the impact of the crash and sustained injuries, he said. "Firefighters rushed them to Natore Sadar Hospital, where Fahima was declared dead on arrival," the OC added.
2 killed in separate city road accidents
Two people were killed in separate road crashes in Badda and Gulshan areas of the capital on Monday.
The deceased were identified as carpenter Md Azmir Sheikh, 27, of Pabna district and Sakhina Aktar, 28, a cleaner of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
In Badda, Azmir was injured after being hit by a truck while crossing the road in front of Hossain Market area early Monday.

He was later rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead around 6am.
In Gulshan, Sakhina sustained injuries on her head after being hit by a microbus while she was sweeping the road at Coca-Cola intersection in the early hours of Monday.
She was rushed to a local hospital first and then shifted to DMCH where she succumbed to her injuries around 5:30am.

The bodies were kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
9-year old killed after being hit by truck in city, driver held
A 9-year old boy was killed as a truck his bicycle in the city's Sabujbagh area on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Sajjad Hossain, a student of class IV of Sabujbagh Government Primary School and son of Md Riaz, a resident of North Bashabo area.
The accident occurred around 12 pm when the soil-laden truck hit the bicycle of Sajjad , leaving him dead on the spot, said Moniruzzaman, Sub inspector of Sabujbagh police station.

Locals held truck driver Mosharef,48, and handed him over to police, said SI Moniruzaman.
The body was sent to hospital morgue for an autopsy and the truck was seized, he said.

10 killed in blast in eastern India
As many as 10 people were killed and nine others injured in a powerful explosion that ripped through a three-storey building in the eastern Indian state of Bihar in the small hours of Friday.
Officials said the explosion occurred inside a house in the town of Bhagalpur, 250 kms from state capital Patna, reducing it to rubble. Two adjacent houses also collapsed like a pack of cards in the impact.
Bhagalpur district magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen said that the powerful blast occurred in the house of a middle-aged person, named Mahendra Mandal, who had been running an illegal fireworks factory on his premises.

"The 10 bodies recovered so far were badly disfigured, and the administration is yet to confirm the identities of the deceased. Nine survivors have been rushed to a hospital," he told the local media.
Local TV channels aired footage of rescue operations being carried out by police and residents of the area in Kajbalichak.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the loss of lives in Bhagalpur. He also spoke with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and took stock of the rescue operations this morning.
"A probe has been ordered into the explosion," Sen said.
Five jungle cats beaten dead in Chuadanga
A mother jungle cat and four cubs were beaten to death by some local people on Wednesday in Chudanga Sadar upazila.
The mother with the cubs took shelter inside the kitchen of expatriate Billal Hossain’s house at Dinnathpur village in the upazila recently.
After spotting the jungle cats Billa’s wife Nuri Begum informed her neighbours.

Local people beath the jungle cats to death and burried them, said Bakhtiar Ahmed, president of Care For Unclaimed Beast, a local voluntary environmentalist organisation.
Mohammad Mohsin, Officer-in-Charge of Chuadanga sadar police station, said no complaint was lodged in this regard.
Zakir Hossain, district forest officer, said, “We were informed of the tragic incident and we are preparing to file a case in this regard after visiting the spot.”
The photos of the dead jungle cats shared on social media has sparked reactions amog animal lovers, environmentalists and they demand exemplary punishment for the crime, said said Bakhtiar Ahmed, president of Care For Unclaimed Beast.

The jungle cat, also known as reed cat or swamp cat, is native to the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and southern China. Its scientific name is Felis Chaus.
This medium-sized cat usually inhabits wetlands like swamps, and littoral and riparian areas with dense vegetation. However, they have become endangered in Bangladesh due to the reckless destruction of their habitat.

Pedestrian killed in city road crash
A 45-year-old man died after being allegedly hit by a speeding vehicle while crossing a road in the city's Jatrabari area in the small hours of Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Omar Faruk, a resident of Uttar Jatrabari.

The accident occurred around 1am when an unknown vehicle knocked him down when he was crossing the road, leaving him injured, said Saddam Hossain, sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

“Efforts are on to identify the vehicle and arrest its driver,” said the SI.
Police Memorial Day recalls sacrifices of those killed in the line of duty
Senior Secretary of the Public Security division under the Home Ministry Akhter Hossain on Saturday said the police carry out challenging duties like maintaining security of life and protecting property of the people, maintaining law and order, which are very difficult to implement.
The police has been performing those challenging duties properly since if these are not implemented properly, there will be severe chaos in the society and development will be hampered.

Akhter Hossain came up with the remarks while addressing a programme, which was organized to mark the Police Memorial Day at Police Staff College Convention Hall at Mirpur in the city on Tuesday.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed presided over the function where welcoming remarks were made by Additional IG (HRM) Md. Mazharul Islam. Additional IGs, heads of various units of the police based in Dhaka, senior police officers and families of police personnel killed in the line of duty were present on the occasion.
Senior Home Secretary said ,”We view any minor incident by the police in a negative light," he said. "Rather, we may think that we can sleep peacefully at night because the police are awake.”
In his speech, the IGP Benazir Ahmed said that Police Memorial Day has been celebrated since 2017. Today we are reunited in that continuity. "In 2021, we lost 348 colleagues, of which 136 lost their lives during on duty," he said.
The IGP said that in times of peace the police are engaged in war. This war is against unrest, against terrorism, against those who want to disrupt the peace and security of the society. "We are engaged in this war for 24 hours. In case of war, the loss is certain. Since we are constantly fighting for state security, social security, we are also sacrificing every year," he added.
"We are trying to establish the Central Police Hospital as a full-fledged hospital. A divisional hospital is being set up in Dhaka," he said.
Police Memorial Day 2022 has been celebrated with due dignity in all metropolitans, range and district units of Bangladesh Police.

Later, a memorandum of recognition was given to the families of the police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty at the Police Staff College Convention Hall.
It may be mentioned that out of 138 police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty in 2021, there is one Additional Superintendent of Police, one Assistant Superintendent of Police, ten Inspectors, 23 Sub-Inspectors, one Sergeant, 19 ASIs, two Naiks and 81 Constables.
