Gold worth Tk6.5 crore seized at Dhaka airport
Dhaka Customs House seized 8kg gold worth Tk6.5 crore from a Biman Flight Catering Centre (BFCC) staff at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital Wednesday.
Mohammad Abdul Aziz Akand was held with the precious yellow metal in front of the BFCC, Md Sanwarul Kabir, a deputy commissioner at Dhaka Customs House, said.
Acting on a tip-off, Dhaka Customs House officials managed to seize the gold from Aziz at 8pm after waiting for seven hours to catch him, Sanwarul added.
"The gold was smuggled into a Bangladesh Biman flight that returned from Dubai. Aziz was supposed to illegally transport it. A case will be filed against him," he said.

State Minister for Civil Aviation M Mahbub Ali on Monday asked the officials concerned at immigration to not to interrogate each passenger during immigration at Dhaka Airport.
“We have talked to the immigration authorities and asked them not to interrogate every passenger to avoid harassment. They can interrogate the person who is suspicious to them and they will be under interrogation in separate, if needed. Besides, it is difficult to interrogate all in one day,” he said while talking to reporters after observing the overall situation of the airport on Monday.
We came here to monitor the airport management and check the performance of the airport authorities, he said.

The ministry has formed a team to monitor the airport management and they visited the airport area three days in a week, he added.
Referring to the hajj management, the minister said all preparation has been taken to start hajj flights from May 31.
“We have taken preparation to conduct the hajj flights with our own flight Biman Bangladesh Airlines,”
There are four aircrafts of Boeing-777 out of 21 aircrafts of Biman and in 2019, hajj flight was conducted with the four flights and it will be the same in this year too, said Mahbub.
“We are working to maintain hajj flights without any disruption and the authorities concerned are monitoring the hajj flight activities regularly,” he said.
Noting that there is a trolley crisis at the airports, Mahbub said a number of close circuit cameras were installed to check harassment of passengers, if any.

He also urged the officials concerned at ground handling of the airport, to join their work thirty minutes before their scheduled time and exit their workplace half hours after their working time to ensure smooth service of the passengers.
This year, a total of 57,856 pilgrims will be able to perform Hajj from Bangladesh and of them 53,585 will travel under private management.
The minimum cost under government management has been fixed at Tk 4,62, 150 this year which is over Tk 1 lakh more than 2020.
Flights carrying Bangladeshi pilgrims to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj will begin on May 31, said the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry on April 27.
Man held with Yaba pills in stomach at Dhaka airport
Airport Armed Police have detained a man who was carrying 4,675 Yaba pills in his stomach from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The detainee was identified as Masud Khan, 39, of Chandpur district.

Additional SP of Airport Armed Police (AAP) Mohammad Ziaul Haque said they detained Masud on suspicion in front of the domestic terminal around 11:50 pm on Sunday.
During preliminary interrogation, Masud revealed that he had kept 4,675 Yaba pills in his stomach which were recovered later, he added.

A case was filed at the Airport police station under the Narcotics Control Act, the official said.
Biman's 2 Boeings that collided at airport 'ready to fly' again
The two Boeing aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines that collided with each other in the hangar area of Dhaka airport have come into operation on Thursday.
However, the incident is still under investigation, said a media release from Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Earlier on Sunday, the Boeing 777-300ER collided with the Boeing 737-800 aircraft while entering the hangar inside Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The radome and front bulkhead of the 777 aircraft and the horizontal stabilizer on the left of the 737 aircraft were partially damaged due to the collision, said the release.
The two damaged aircraft have been readied for take off in a short period of time due to the efforts of skilled aircraft engineers.
CAAB cleaning staff held with 41.76 kg gold bars at Dhaka airport
Customs officials held a cleaning staff of Civil Aviation authority, Bangladesh on Thursday carrying 36 pieces of gold bars weighing 41.76 kg at Hazrat Shahjalal international Airport in Dhaka.
The detainee is Mohammad Surujuzzaman, employed by the CAAB at the airport.
Following a tip off, a preventive team of customs officials of Dhaka Customs House challenged Surujuzzaman at 11:30 am in front of the arrival health counter of the airport as his movement was suspicious.

The gold bars were recovered from the pockets of his pants covered with scotch tapes.
Each bar weighed 116 grams and the total worth of the bar will be around Tk 3 crore at current market price, said the customs officials.

Md Abu Sayeed, Assistant Revenue Officer (preventive) of Dhaka Customs House filed a case in this regard at the airport police station under the Customs Act, 1969.
Dhaka airport's 3rd terminal to 'boost' trade
Construction of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of passenger and cargo handling and will contribute to boosting Bangladesh's trade.
The new terminal is set to more than double the airport's annual passenger handling capacity – from eight million to over 20 million – and cargo capacity – from 200,000 tonnes to 500,000 tonnes.
The three-storey terminal building is being built on an area of 542,000 square metres, with a floor space of 230,000 square metres, 115 check-in counters, 64 departure and 64 arrival immigration desks.
The world-class terminal equipped with modern amenities will provide all services under a single roof, ensuring seamless operations and the comfort of passengers.

The import cargo complex will be 27,000 square metres, with a capacity of handling 273,470 tonnes per year.
The export cargo complex, with an area of 36,000 square metres, will have a capacity of 546,941 tonnes annually.
Besides, the parking space will accommodate 1,230 vehicles at a time.
The terminal will have 27 hold baggage x-ray screener machines, 11 body scanners, 25 central departure security screening, 12 boarding bridges, and 16 luggage belts.
AKM Maksudul Islam, project director of the third terminal, briefed a delegation of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) about the features and amenities of the new terminal when they visited the site Thursday.

The delegation included BGMEA President Faruque Hassan; vice-presidents Shahidullah Azim and Miran Ali, Director Asif Ashraf and former director Ashikur Rahman (Tuhin).
High officials of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) were also present.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said trade and businesses are expanding in Bangladesh, so is the demand for international trade by air.
"Terminal-3, with advanced architecture and modern facilities, will help not only to boost trade but also augment the image of Bangladesh internationally," he added.
Passenger held with huge gold at Dhaka airport
Customs officials detained a man along with 44 gold bars and gold ornaments, weighing 5.180 kg, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday night.
The detainee was identified as Ataur Rahman of Habiganj district.
Md Toriqul, a surveillance officer of Dhaka Preventive Customs House, said a flight of Arabian Airlines from Sarjah landed at the airport around 9:10 pm.

Tipped off, a preventive team of customs house challenged Ataur while passing through the green channel of the airport and recovered gold from his luggage.
Later, the customs officials recovered 44 gold bars, five pieces of gold ornaments, worth 3.40 crore, from his luggage and body.
Bangladeshi-Italian held with Tk 1.84cr gold at Dhaka airport
A Bangladeshi-origin Italian national was was held with gold bars worth over Tk 1.84 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thursday.
Amranul Haque, who's originally from Raipura in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district but now an Italian citizen, arrived in Dhaka at 2.37pm on Thursday on a flight from the European country, Customs officials said.

A regular scanning of his bag helped the Customs officials seize 3.07 kg of gold worth Tk 1.84 crore. Action will be taken against him, the officials said.
2 held with gold worth over Tk 2cr in separate drives at Dhaka airport
Customs officials detained two men along with 20 gold bars, paste-like gold, and various gold ornaments at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in separate drives on Thursday and Friday.
The detainees were identified as MH Shiblee, and Rakibul Hasan.

Customs Detective and Investigation Circle of the airport said in a press release that based on a tip-off, officials intercepted Shiblee at the airport around 9.30 am today upon his arrival from Sylhet on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dubai.
"Upon frisking, our officials found 18 gold bars weighing 2.09kg hidden in a paper bag in his luggage. The estimated market value of the seized gold is Tk 1.46 crore," said the release.
On Thursday, the Customs officials, tipped off, searched Rakibul Hasan upon his arrival from Dubai on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight and seized 525 grams of paste-like gold and two gold bars and 98 grams of various gold ornaments.

The estimated market value of the seized gold on him is Tk 59.85 lakh.
The seized gold was later deposited at the Customs Warehouse.
The detainees were later handed over to the Airport Police Station. A case will be filed against them in this connection, said the release.
Man held with 8k Yaba pills at Dhaka airport
A Saudi Arabia-bound passenger was arrested with 8,000 Yaba pills at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Tuesday, officials said.
The arrestee has been identified as Md Ohidul Shikdar, a Bangladeshi national.

Sources said airport officials detected the narcotics (in tablet form) while frisking Ohidul just before he was about to board an Emirates Airlines flight to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia at 7.30am.
Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan, Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, said they seized 8,000 Yaba pills hidden in 40 packets from the possession of the passenger.
Legal processes are underway in this regard, he added.
