Housewife killed in Kurigram, husband on the run
A housewife was hacked to death allegedly by her husband at her father’s house in Paikerchhara village in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram early Tuesday.
The victim was identified as Shahida Begum, 40, daughter of Shahjahan Ali and wife of Abu Bakar Siddiqui,44, of the same village.
According to Shahida’s family, Shahida came to her father’s house a few days back with her youngest daughter following a prolonged feud with her husband.

On Monday night, Abu Bakar, a wood trader, also came to meet Shahida, a mother of three, said Mahir Uddin, Shahida’s uncle.
At the dead of night, he said, they heard Shahida’s screams and they found her dead on her bed when they reached there.
Shahida’s daughter and mother also suffered injuries during the incident, said Mahir Uddin.
Paikerchara union member (ward-1) Abu Md Bajlur Rahman said the injured were taken to a local hospital.

Shahida’s body, bearing the marks of sharp injuries in her neck, was recovered around 4 am, said Ataur Rahman, a sub-inspector of Bhurungamari Police Station.
Abu Bakar went into hiding right after the incident.
Mohila Parishad: 3703 women, girls suffered violence in 2021
A total of 3703 women and girls were subjected to different forms of violence including rape and murder in 2021, according to a report of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad.
Some 1235 females were raped in the last year. Of them 1028 females including 629 girls were raped, 179 females including 62 girls were gang raped and 31 females including 22 girls were killed after rape, said the report published on Monday.
Bangladesh Mohila Parishad President Dr Fouzia Moslem and its General Secretary Maleka Banu presented the report at a press briefing in the city.

The organisation compiled the statistics based on the reports published in13 newspapers.
According to the report, 155 females including 93 girls were subjected to rape attempt while 33 females including 14 girls were subjected to sexual assault while 95 females including 62 girl children faced sexual harassment.
Besides, acid attacks were carried out on 22 women including five girls while four of them succumbed to burn injuries.
The report also said that 23 females including three girl children were subjected to burn injuries and of them ten succumbed to their injuries.
Meanwhile, 180 females including 153 girl children were victims of abduction while eleven others were subjected to such attempts.
Forty-two females including six girl children were trafficked while 46 women, including 32 girl children were harassed at different times.
The report also said 138 females including one girl child were subjected to physical torture for dowry and of them 45 were killed for dowry.
As many as 208 females including 58 girl children suffered physical torture while 444 females including 114 girl children were killed for various reasons.

Eighty-seven women, including 19 children were subjected to murder attempt while 427 females including 131 girl children died mysteriously, said the report.
A total of 121 female students including 43 girl children committed suicide while eleven attempted to commit suicide.
There were incidents of 327 child marriages across the country while 63 females including 23 girl children were victims of cybercrime.
There were 260 incidents of child marriages in Kishoreganj district alone while 1242 incidents of child marriage were reported from Tangail in the past one and half year.
Hardware store staff killed by UP chairman & his men in Feni, 4 held
A hardware store employee was killed on Thursday night in an attack allegedly led by Mirzanagar union parishad chairman in Feni's Parashuram.
The deceased was Identified as Shahin Chowdhury, employee of a hardware store in Parshuram Bazar. He's survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
After the deceased wife lodged a complaint, four people were arrested in connection with the murder. However, UP chairman Nuruzzaman Bhutto is on the run.
According to locals, Hashem, an associate of chairman Nuruzzaman, Thursday went to the store and asked for Tk 7 lakh that he had loaned to its owner.

An argument broke out between Hashem and the victim. Soon, Hashem called the UP chairman and his men. All arrived in no time and badly thrashed Shahin.
Locals rescued him and took him to the Upazila Health Complex where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Parashuram police station officer-in-charge Khaled Hossain said that the deceased’s wife filed a complaint on Thursday night. 'Four people have already been arrested in this regard. Efforts are on to arrest the other accused," he said.

Woman hacked to death in Pabna; Youth held
A woman was stabbed to death and her husband injured in an attack by a youth at Munshidpur village in Ishwardi Upazila of Pabna district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Sharmin Shila, 32, wife of Ranaur Rahman of the village.
Police arrested Sumon Ali, 30, son of Asgor Ali of Soraikandi village, from the spot.

Firoz Kabir, Additional Superintendent of Police of Ishwardi Circle said the couple used to live in a flat on the 3rd floor of the house.
On Tuesday morning, Sumon attacked the woman with a sharp weapon and chopped her indiscriminately, leaving her dead on the spot, he said.
He also hit Shila’s husband Ranaur when he came forward to save his wife.
Later, locals caught the attacker and informed police.

Police said they recovered the body and arrested the attacker from the spot. They also took the injured to a hospital.
The reason behind the attack was not clear, the Additional SP said. “The attacker might have killed the woman over previous enmity”.
Freedom fighter murdered by three men in Keraniganj
A freedom fighter was allegedly killed by three men after his arbitration went against one of them in the Korergaon area of south Keraniganj.
The victim was identified as Shahidullah, 70, a local resident. Four others also sustained minor injuries in the attack.
According to locals and family members,Shahidullah helped settle a dispute on Sunday but the decision went against one of the accused, Ripon.

Subsequently, Ripon and his two accomplices attacked the freedom fighter, leaving him seriously injured.
Locals rescued him to Swadesh Hospital in the area. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital as his condition deteriorated where he succumbed to his injuries this morning.
Officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj police station, Abul Kalam Azad said that a murder case would be registered against the trio. "Efforts are on to arrest them."

Indian man beaten to death inside historic Sikh temple
A man was beaten to death in the northern Indian city of Amritsar after he allegedly attempted to commit a sacrilegious act inside the historic Golden Temple, one of Sikhs' most revered shrines.
The incident occurred during the daily evening prayer on Saturday, media reported, after the man jumped over a railing inside the inner sanctum and attempted to grab a sword that was kept near the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book.

TV footage showed people inside the temple rushing to stop him.
Police told New Delhi Television that the man was killed after the incident and that they were checking CCTV footage to glean more information.
“The man, about 20 to 25 years of age, had a yellow cloth tied on his head and jumped the fence ... the people inside held him and escorted him out to the corridor where there was a violent altercation and he died,” Parminder Singh Bandal, deputy commissioner of Amritsar police, told the channel.
The chief minister of Punjab state, where Amritsar is located, strongly condemned the incident, calling it the most “unfortunate and heinous act to attempt sacrilege,” his office tweeted late on Saturday.
AL member killed in Bagerhat
Bagerhat, Dec 17 (UNB)— An Awami League member was killed and three others were injured in an attack by a rival group over establishing supremacy at Rampal area of Bagerhat on Friday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Firoz Dhali, 45, son of Ashad Ali of Kastobaria area of Rampal Upazila while the injured were Awrongojeb,42, Hanif,38, and Akram Dhali of Kadirkhali area.
Former general secretary of Rampal Upazila Awami League Jamil Hasan Jamu said, “I was dropped off at the gate of the house around 10:30 am and four people including Firoz Dhali were going towards their house. After a while, 30-40 people including Bellal Bepari and his brother Baki attacked, leaving them injured”.
Injured Firoz was taken to Rampal Upazila health complex.

Later, he was shifted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Rampal Police Station, Md. Shamsuddin said they have detained 6 people for questioning over this incident.
Police have been deployed in the area to avoid any further unwanted situations, he said. “Police have started work to bring the culprits under the law”.
Cumilla councillor murder: arrestee makes confessional statement before court
One of the arrestees in the Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel murder case gave his confessional statement on Thursday.
Accused Emran Hossain Rishat, 23, a member of the killing squad gave his confessional statement before Cumilla Chief Judicial Magistrate Trial Court-1 judge Farhana Akter.
During his three-day remand, Rishat agreed to record his confessional statement, said Parimal Das, deputy inspector of detective branch of the district police.
Rishat, in his statement, confessed that he participated in the killing and supplied arms for the mission, said Parimal.

Earlier on Monday, police arrested Nazim and Rishat, two of the suspected hit squad members who were not named as accused in the case.
On Tuesday, a Cumilla court placed them on a three-day remand each for interrogation and the next day Nazim gave his confessional statement before the magistrate.
On November 22, Sohel, Cumilla City Corporation (CCC) councilor of Ward-17, and one of his aides were killed, while four others sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire in his office in Pathuariapara.
Based on his younger brother Syed Rumon's complaint, as many as 21 people, some 10 of them unidentified, were booked by the Kotwali police for the double murder.

So far, seven accused and four suspects were arrested in this case, while another accused Rony remains absconding.
Meanwhile, prime accused Shah Alam, Sabbir Hossain, Sajon Mia were killed in alleged gunfights with police.
8 to hang for killing Armyman in 2018
A fast-track court in Khulna Wednesday sentenced eight men to death for killing an Army personnel in 2016.
Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Md Nazrul Islam Hawlader handed down the punishment to the eight after holding them guilty of Lance Corporal Saiful Islam Saif's murder.
While five of the convicts were present in the court, the remaining three were tried in absentia, said Public Prosecutor Ahaduzzaman.

On August 18, 2018, the eight attacked Lance Corporal Saiful, his younger brother Md Monirul Islam, a Coast Guard personnel, and another person im Beltalardari while the three were travelling to Bankira on a bike.

Lance Corporal Saiful, son of Md Hafiz Uddin, a resident of Jhenaidah, was killed in the attack. He was posted at Ghatail Army Medical Training Center in Tangail district.
Two to die for murder in Rajshahi
A Rajshahi court on Monday sentenced two people to death for killing a man in 2013.
The condemned convicts are-Phuljan Bibi, 40, wife of Deraj Mistri and Mafiz Uddin, 45, son of Moijuddin of Kathalbaria in Durgapur upazila of the district.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Phuljan had maintained illicit relationship with Nurunnabi alias Ayub Nabi and Mafiz Uddin despite having her husband.

When Mafiz came to know about the relationship between Phuljan and Nurunnabi, he got angry.
To make Mafiz happy, Phuljan then made a plot to kill Nurunnabi with the assistance of Mafiz.
On April 15, 2013, Phuljan called Nurunnabi near a poultry farm where she along with Mafiz killed Nurunnabi.
Later, they severed the head of Nurunnabi and dumped the body.

Hashem Ali, son of Nurunnabi, filed a case with Durgapur Police Station.
After examining the records and witnesses, Rajshahi Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal Judge Akbar Ali Sheikh handed down the verdict.
