Hasina, Modi to open new Indo-Bangla rail link Monday
Dhaka, Sept 9 (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi will jointly inaugurate Kulaura-Shahbazpur Section Rehabilitation and Akhaura-Agartala Dual Gauge Rail Connection through video conference on Sunday.
Through the opening of Kulaura-Shahbazpur Section Rehabilitation, a comfortable inter-district train communication will be established as part of Asian Railway Network between the two countries.
The project includes a 53-kilometre dual gauge rail line, bridges and culverts, infrastructure of stations and implementation of other public works and non-interlocked colour light signalling system, involving Tk 678.50 crore.
Bangladesh government will provide Tk 122.52 crore while the rest 555.98 crore will be taken from Indian LOC.
The Kulaura-Shahbazpur Section Rehabilitation has been declared inoperative from July 7, 2002, after its inauguration on December 4, 1896, due to management and lack of budget.
The Akhaura-Agartala Dual Gauge Rail Connection project includes a 10-kilometre dual gauge rail line, culvert, passenger platform, platform shed, customs and immigration building and a bungalow involving Tk 240.90 crore.
The duration of the project is 18 months from the date of the agreement and the Indian Government will finance the project.
