PM condoles death of actor Masum Aziz
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Ekushey Padak winning actor and screenplay writer Masum Aziz.
In a condolence message, the prime minister said the talented actor will be remembered for his work.
She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Masum Aziz died on Monday afternoon at a private hospital in the capital where he was under treatment for heart-related ailment.
He was admitted to the hospital with cardiac problem on October 3 and was put on life support as his condition deteriorated on Thursday morning.

His body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday morning for the public to pay tributes.
His body will later be taken to his ancestral home in Pabna where he will be buried at his family graveyard.
The actor was awarded the country's second highest civilian award, the Ekushey Padak, this year for his remarkable contribution in acting.
President mourns demise of his press secy's brother
Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid on Saturday expressed deep grief over the untimely demise of Harun Rashid, the brother of President's press secretary Zainal Abedin.
The President prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Rashid passed away this morning at a hospital in the capital. He was 63 years old.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter.

Former Police Commissioner Ghulam Murshed no more
Additional IG (Retd) and former Police Commissioner ABM Ghulam Murshed passed away on Monday.He breathed his last around 10.15am at the capital's Evercare Hospital. He was 83.His Namaz Zanaza will be held today (October 10) after Asar prayers at Rajarbagh Police Lines.He will be laid to rest at Banani Graveyard, said former ambassador Mahbub Uz Zaman.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Ekushey Padak recipient veteran journalist Toab Khan.
In a condolence message, the premier recalled that Toab Khan, the Editor of Bengali daily ‘Dainik Bangla’, had played the role of a word hero of Swadhin Betar Kendra during the Liberation War.
She noted that the distinguished journalist served with patriotism and devotion in various fields of mass media after the independence of Bangladesh.

Toab Khan served as the editor of Dainik Bangla, the Chief Information Officer, the Director General of Press Institute of Bangladesh and the advisory editor of the Daily Janakantha. He also served as the press secretary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“This lifelong fighter and talented journalist will be remembered for his own works,” said Hasina.

Veteran journalist Toab Khan, Editor of ‘Dainik Bangla’, died of old age complications at a hospital in the capital on Saturday. He was 87.
Khan, an Ekushey Padak recipient, breathed his last at the United Hospital at 12:30 pm, said Sharifuzzaman Pintu, Dainik Bangla’s Executive Editor.
Khan started his journalism career in 1953 and joined Dainik Songbad in 1955.
He was also the first Editor of ‘Dainik Bangla’ which changed its name from ‘Dainik Pakistan’ after Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
He became the Editor of ‘Dainik Bangla’ on January 14, 1972. He also served as the Press Secretary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1973-75.
Toab Khan also served as Chief Information Officer and Director General of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB).
The veteran journalist also played a role as a strong voice in Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra to inspire the freedom fighters during the War of Liberation.
He also served as the Advisory Editor of daily ‘Janakantha’ and later joined as the Editor of ‘Danik Bangla’.
His body has been kept in a mortuary and decision regarding his burial place will be taken once her daughter Tania Khan returns home from abroad, said his family.

First DG of Bangladesh Betar passes away
Enamul Haq, the first director general of Bangladesh Betar, has passed away. He was 93.
The veteran journalist breathed his last at United Hospital in the city on Tuesday night, said his family.
He was made director general of Bangladesh Betar after independence of the country. After two years, he was given the responsibilities of leading Press Information Department (PID).
In 1980, he was posted to Bangladesh High Commission in London as press minister.
He served as the editor of the New Nation newspaper and also contributed hundreds of articles for many domestic and international publications.
Haq left behind his wife, two sons and three daughters.
He was laid to rest in a graveyard at Baridhara J block .
Ekushey Padak winning journalist Ranesh Maitra no more
Ekushey Padak winning journalist and columnist Ranesh Maitra passed away in a city hospital early Monday. He was 90.
He breathed his last at Popular Hospital in the early hours today.
Ranesh Maitra left behind his wife Purabi Maitra, two sons, three daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers.
Deputy Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Md Shamsul Haque Tuku expressed his condolences at the demise of Maitra.
Born on October 4 in 1933 in Nahata village of Rajshahi district, Maitra completed his IA in 1955 and BA in 1959 from Govt Edward College in Pabna.
He started his career as a journalist in the weekly newspaper ‘Noubelal’ published from Sylhet in 1951.
He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2018 for his contribution in journalism.
Major (retd) MA Maleque Chowdhury dies
Major (retd) MA Maleque Chowdhury passed away on Monday. He was 78.
Chowdhury, who had long been suffering from cardiac and old-age complications, breathed his last at 12:35am while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka, said Julhas Alam, his son-in-law and Bangladesh bureau chief of the Associated Press (AP).
He left behind his wife, three daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

Chowdhury was buried at Banani Military Graveyard. His namaz-e-janaza was held at Dhaka CMH Jam-e-Mosque after Asr prayers.
A team from the Bangladesh Army gave him a guard of honour.
Hailing from Gaibandha, Chowdhury joined Pakistan Army on September 19, 1968 and later joined the Bangladesh Army in 1973 after the independence of the country.

He performed various important duties as a member of the Bangladesh Army and led several successful operations against various anti-national activities along the border of the greater Mymensingh area.
Besides, Chowdhury played an important role in the Bangladesh Border Guard Force at that time in establishing peace and preventing smuggling along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Cox's Bazar area.
Dhaka's first mayor BNP leader Abul Hasnat has died
Barrister Abul Hasnat, the first mayor of Dhaka City Corporation and a founding member of BNP, passed away on Friday at his residence in London. He was 82.
Hasnat breathed his last around 5am local time due to old age complications, said his son Rajib Hasnat.

He left behind his wife Nasreen Begum, a son and a daughter.
Hasnat, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, went to the UK in 2019, but could not return to the country due to Covid pandemic.
He served as the first mayor of Dhaka City Corporation during 1977–1982 and again in 1990.
He was a founding member of the BNP standing committee.

He also served as the minister of housing and public works in the Cabinet of President Justice Abdus Sattar and Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
He joined the Jatiya Party in 1990 and was elected to parliament from Dhaka-9 seat in a by-election as a candidate of the party.
He returned to BNP after Ershad was overthrown in 1990.
