PM holding press conference to discuss outcomes of recent US visit
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is addressing a press conference, to discuss the outcomes of her recent visit to the United States to join the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The press conference started at her official residence Ganabhaban at 4 pm on Friday.
Deputy Leader of Parliament, Matia Chowdhury; Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader; State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam; and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP are also at the press conference.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim is conducting the press conference.
On Wednesday, PM Hasina returned home from London after wrapping up her 16-day official visit to the US and the UK.
During her stay in New York, from September 17 to 22, the premier attended the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and other high-level side and bilateral events.
In Washington DC, from September 23-29, Sheikh Hasina attended a reception accorded to her by Bangladeshi expatriates in the United States and visited the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC.
The prime minister reached London from Washington DC on September 30 via a British Airways flight.
In London, from September 30 to October 3, Sheikh Hasina attended reception hosted by the Bangladeshi community and held several courtesy calls with some dignitaries, including a delegation of the All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) led by Rushanara Ali, MP, chair of APPG on Bangladesh and Rohingya and the UK shadow minister for investment and small business.

Man, nephew die by lightning strikes in Mymensingh
A man and his nephew died when lightning struck them while they were working at their fishery in Mymensingh's Gafargaon on Friday.
The incident happened at Satterbari village in Longair Union under the Pagla Police Station of the upazila on Friday morning.

The deceased were identified as Sohel Mondal (42) and Rajib Mondal (32) of the village.
According to police and locals, the bank of Sohel's fish farm in Saterbari village was broken due to heavy rain last night. Sohel and Rajib Mondal were working to repair the broken bank when, all of a sudden, there was a lightning strike, killing them on the spot.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pagla Police Station, Raju Ahmed, said the bodies were buried without autopsies as there was no complaint from the family.

2.55 lakh yaba pills seized along Myanmar border region in Cox’s Bazar: BGB
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 2.55 lakh pieces of yaba pills along the Myanmar border in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Thursday night.
The border force was unable to detain anyone in this connection.
According to a media release signed by Lt Col Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, commnding officer of the BGB-2 in Teknaf, several teams of the BGB took position in the Acharbunia area along the Myanmar border after being tipped off that a big consignment of yaba pills would be smuggled into Bangladesh from the neighbouring country.
At around 10:00 pm, the BGB patrol team saw two men carrying plastic bags on their shoulders, crossing the zero line of the border, and coming towards the salt field in the Acharbunia Beribandh area. BGB patrols challenged them as their movements were found suspicious.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the two fled the scene, leaving the bags behind. Later, a total of 2.55 lakh pieces of yaba pills were recovered from the abandoned bags, said the release.
Though the BGB members conducted drivers until 11:30 pm in the area, the peddlers could not be detained, the release added.
Man beaten to death over land dispute in Lakshmipur
A man was beaten to death allegedly over a land dispute in Lakshmipur on Friday.
The incident happened in Mahadevpur area of Dalal Bazar union of Sadar upazila on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Nur Nabi Bakul of Ali Raja Patwari Bari in area.
According to the relatives of the deceased, Bakul had a long-standing land dispute with local Abdur Rauf and his family.

In the morning, rivals Abdur Rauf Master, Ashraf Islam Babul and Zafar Ahmed Palash Gongra went to remove betel nut from the Bakul’s property. When Bakul resisted, both sides got into an argument. At one point, Bakul was beaten with a kick-punch and a stick, his family alleged.
Later, the locals rescued and took him to Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Dr Kamalashish Roy, an on-duty doctor at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, said the man died before he could be brought to the hospital. Initially, there were no injury marks on him. Details will be known after the autopsy.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station Mosleh Uddin said the body has been sent to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Legal action over the matter is under process.
Rain damages over 2,000 hectares of Aman paddy in Natore, many stranded in water
Heavy rains damaged Aman paddies in over 2,000 hectares in the past couple of days in Singra and Naldanga upazilas of northern district of Natore.
The downpour also damaged vegetables on vast tracts of land in the affected areas, locals said.
Farmers of Sadar upazila informed that vegetable fields under all unions went under water causing massive damage.

Sadar Municipality mayor Uma Chowdhury Joly informed that they have already launched renovation works of drains to ease water logging.

Abdul Wadud, deputy director at district Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said they recorded 95mm rainfall in the last 24 hours and the highest rainfall was recorded in the Sadar upazila.

Couple dies after mud house collapses during rain in Gazipur
A mud hut collapsed in heavy rain early Friday, leaving a couple dead in their sleep in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tajwar Akram Sakapi Ibne Sazzad confirmed the deaths to UNB over phone.
However, the identities of the two could not be known immediately.

Locals said the mud walls of the couple’s house weakened due to continuous downpour for the past few days in Ratanpur area.
Suddenly, the house collapsed on them when they were asleep in the early morning, leaving the two dead on the spot, according to them.

Russian House in Dhaka holds seminar on study opportunities in Russia
The Russian House in Dhaka recently organised a seminar on study opportunities in Russia for the academic year 2024-2025
The seminar was held at United International University (UIU).

The programme talked about the possibility of receiving scholarships provided by the government of the Russian Federation in cooperation with the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC) of UIU.
The Russian House in Dhaka, Pavel Dvoychenkov, delivered an updated data on the Russian education system, a detailed application process, and the submission of documents online on the following website: "https://education-in-russia.com".

He said Bangladeshi students can study at any university designated for scholarship in Russia. He talked about the world-class higher education and professional prospects of Russian alumni, who hold various senior positions in various public services, private companies, and higher education institutions in Bangladesh.
The director also mentioned taking Russian language courses at the Russian House to facilitate higher education studies in Russia and invited prospective students to participate the next seminar which will be held on October 9 at the Russian House in Dhaka.
AKM Muzahidul Islam, a Russian alumni and professor of Computer Science and Engineering and the Director of the CIAC at UIU, recounted his time studying in Russia, spoke about the world-class education system, and encouraged the seminar participants to take up the opportunity to study in Russia.

PhD student at the People's Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) and President of the Bangla Press Club, Barek Kaisar, highlighted the Russian education system and the current practical experience of studying in Russia.

Young painter shot dead in Khulna
A young man was gunned down by miscreants in Khulna's Sonadanga upazila on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Emon Sheikh, son of Sanwar Hossain. He was a painter by profession and used to live in a rented house in Gobarchaka Nabinagar area of the city.
Eyewitnesses said that Emon was standing in front of Mohammad Kha area of Talukdar Lane around 7pm. Suddenly, a group of unidentified miscreants in 5/6 motorbikes opened fire on Emon, leaving him seriously injured.

Locals rescued him and admitted him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 8pm.
Confirming the matter, Sonadanga Police Station OC Momtazul Haque said, efforts are on to arrest the suspected murderers.
Attack on former US envoy Bernicat: Suspect Ishtiaq granted bail
A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to Mohammad Ishtiaq Mahmud in a case filed over the attack on the convoy of former US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat in Mohammadpur.
DB police produced Ishtiaq Mahmud before the court on Thursday (October 5) and sought a decision to keep him in prison.
After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Nurul Huda Chowdhury granted him bail on a bond of Tk 1,000.

On Wednesday, police in Dhaka arrested Mahmud involving the 2018 attack on the convoy of then former US ambassador Bernicat .
Mohammadpur Awami League’s President Ishtiaq is one of the nine accused allegedly involved in the attack.
On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zaki Al-Farabi accepted the supplementary chargesheet filed by the Detective Branch of DMP against nine people, including a BCL leader, in connection with the 2018 attack.
The accused in the case are: Ishtiaq Mahmud, brother-in-law of Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar; President of Mohammadpur Thana unit of Chhatra League Naimul Hasan alias Russel; Firoz Mahmud; Mir Amjad Hossain; Saju Islam; Rajibul Islam; Shahidul Alam Khan; Siam; and Oli Ahmed.

In the supplementary chargesheet, Ishtiaq was shown as a fugitive.
After accepting the chargesheet, the magistrate issued an arrest warrant against Ishtiaq.
On September 19, The Detective Branch (DB) submitted a supplementary chargesheet in this regard.
Shujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station on August 10, 2018, over the attack.
On January 18, 2021, the investigating officer of the case Inspector Md Abdur Rouf submitted the chargesheet to the court accusing nine people.
The nine accused were formally charged on March 1, 2022, and the trial commenced on March 28 of the previous year.
On December 4, six witnesses testified in the case. During their statements, witnesses Badiul Alam Majumdar, Khushi Begum, and Mahbubul Alam Majumder mentioned the name of Ishtiaq.
Later, on December 27, the court lifted the case from the deposition stage and sent it to the CMM Court in Dhaka to take necessary steps for further investigation.
On January 1, the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury ordered a further investigation into the case.
