‘Koozhangal’ wins top award at 20th Dhaka Int’l Film Festival
The 20th Dhaka International Film Festival concluded on Sunday which awarded Tamil director PS Vinothraj's maiden directorial and India's official entry to Oscars 2022 ‘Koozhangal’ (Pebbles) as the Best Film this year.
As for the Bangladeshi films, two periodic films jointly received the Audience Award: Nurul Alam Atique-directed ‘Lal Moroger Jhuti’ and N Rashed Chowdhury-directed ‘Chandrabati Kotha,’ while Shabnam Ferdousi-directed film ‘Ajob Karkhana’ got the Best Film Award by FIPRESCI Jury in the Bangladesh Panorama category.

A total of 17 awards were given in different categories at the closing ceremony of the 20th Dhaka International Film Festival, organised by the Rainbow Film Society at the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum.
The closing ceremony was joined by Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud as the chief guest, while Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky and Dhaka Club Limited President Khandaker Mashiuzzaman Romel were present as special guests.
Presided over by festival executive committee member and Liberation War Museum Trustee Mofidul Hoque, DIFF Director Ahmed Muztaba Zamal delivered the welcome speech at the closing and award-giving ceremony.
This year’s festival was mostly dominated by the strong screening of Asian films. Stories namely from India, China, Nepal, Russia and Iran bagged several awards at the 20th edition of the global festival.
In the Asian Cinema Competition Section, the Best Director Award went to Sujit Bidari for the film ‘Ainaa Jhyal Ko Putali’ while the Best Actor Award went to Jayasurya for the film ‘Sunny,’ and the Best Actress Award went to Sussan Parva for ‘Botox,’ an Iranian-Canadian joint production.
The award for the Best Script Writer went to Indranil Roychowdhury and Sugata Sinha for Indranil Roychowdhury-directed film ‘Mayar Jonjal’ (Debris of Desire), a joint production of Bangladesh and India, which showcased stellar performances by seasoned actors Ritwick Chakraborty, Aupee Karim and more. The film is based on Manik Bandopadhyay’s two short stories, titled ‘Bishakto Prem’ and ‘Shubala’.
The other award for the Asian Film Competition Section, the Best Cinematography Award went to Zhou Wencao for ‘Cafe by the Highway’ (China), directed by Shi Xiaofan.
As for the Women Filmmakers Section, the Best Feature Film Award went to Maryam Bahrololumi-directed Iranian film ‘Shahrbanoo,’ while the Best Documentary Award went to Antonia Kilian-directed documentary ‘Joen Toisella Puolen’ (Germany-Finland) and the Best Short Film Award went to Alexandra Matheou-directed film ‘A Summer Place’ (Cyprus-France).
The Spiritual Films Section recognized this year’s submission with three special awards: the Best Short Film Award went to Orhan Tekeoglu-directed Turkish film Fatma Kayaci’nin Bilinmeyen Hikayesn, the Best Documentary Award went to Rahim Zabihi-directed Iranian documentary ‘Nane Moghadas’ and the Best Feature Film Award went to Chengxu Lan-directed Chinese production ‘Yangzhen’s Journey’.
Besides, the Special Audience Award went to Aimee Baruah-directed Indian film ‘Semkhor’ and the Best Children Film Badal Rahman Award went to Daria Binevskaya-directed Russian film ‘Africa’.

The 20th DIFF featured a total of 225 films from 70 countries, and the films were screened at multiple venues in Dhaka including Bangladesh National Museum’s Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Auditorium and Sufia Kamal Auditorium, Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of Central Public Library, Alliance Française de Dhaka Auditorium, National Art Gallery Auditorium and National Music, Dance and Recitation Centre Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Star Cineplex and for the first time in its two-decades-long tenure, the Foreign Service Academy Auditorium in Dhaka.
Besides the regular screenings, the festival also featured the ‘Eighth Dhaka International Conference on Women in Cinema 2022’ at the Samson Lounge, Dhaka Club from January 16 to January 17 and ‘West Meets East: Screenplay Lab’ from January 16 to 19 at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka.
Rainbow Film Society has been organising Dhaka International Film Festival since 1992 with the theme “Better Film, Better Audience, Better Society”. The next festival will take place between 14-23 January in 2023.
Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul's third death anniversary observed
Ekushey Padak-winning music-director, lyricist, composer and freedom fighter Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul's third death anniversary was observed on Saturday. The revered music icon passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest on this day in 2019.
Family members and admirers of Bulbul observed the occasion remembering his life and works throughout the day.
Born in Dhaka on New Year's Day in 1956, Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul completed his schooling at the West End High School in Azimpur.
When Bangladesh stood against the oppression of Pakistani rulers in 1971 and declared Independence, Bulbul joined the Liberation War at the age of 15 and was stationed in Zinzira at a Mukti Bahini base during the War.

He trained in India before fighting in Dhaka's Lalbagh Thana and New Market Thana. While traveling to India for extra training in October, 1971 - he was apprehended by the Pakistani military and Razakars.
He was then taken to a jail in Mymensingh, where he was tortured and saw the Pakistan military execute 39 Mukti Bahini detainees. He was transported to Dana Miah's home, which operated as the East Pakistan Central Peace Committee's local office. Along with other Mukti Bahini members, he was tortured there.
After the Independence, Bulbul's glorious career started as the revered music icon, beginning with 'Megh Bijli Badol' in 1978.
He wrote and composed hundreds of fan-favourite songs. released independent albums and created works for a number of Bangladeshi performers in his four decades long career.
In addition to Bulbul's musical ventures, he also became a judge on the country's first-ever musical reality show 'Closeup 1 Tomakei Khujchhe Bangladesh' for three seasons.

For his excellence in the Bangladeshi music industry, Bulbul received the National Film Award in the Best Music Director category twice - first in 2001 for his work in 'Premer Tajmahal' and in 2005 for 'Hajar Bochhor Dhore'.
He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2010 for his outstanding contribution to the country’s music industry. He also received the coveted Bachsas (Bangladesh Cholochitra Sangbadik Samity) Awards for 11 time throughout his career.

‘World Film Manifesto Program’ at DU to showcase Emir Kusturica
The 132nd World Film Manifestation Program (WFMP) is going to be held at the Munier Chowdhury Auditorium of Dhaka University’s TSC starting from Sunday.
The event, organized by Dhaka University Chalachitra Sangsad, will end on Monday.
The purpose of this event is to introduce film lovers to the most admired films of all the famous filmmakers of the world.

So far, 131 editions of WFMP have been organized since 2000. The upcoming 132nd iteration will feature the films of two-time ‘Palme d'Or’ award-winning Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica.
Four of Kusturica's films have been lined up for the event - screening two on each day. It starts Sunday at 3:30 pm with 'Black Cat, White Cat', followed by 'Underground' at 6pm.
Monday's line up consists of 'Arizona Dream,' a Surrealist comedy starring Hollywood star Johnny Depp, at the 3.30pm slot, followed at 6pm again by 'Time of the Gypsies,' for which Kusturica won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.
Anyone can enjoy these films at free of cost as it is open for all.

3-day long dance festival begins at BSA Thursday
A 3-day dance festival with participation of 75 dance troops will begin on Thursday at Jatiya Natyashala in Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).
The dance festival will be inaugurated at 4 pm by State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid as the chief guest and President of Bangladesh Nrityashilpi Sangstha Minu Haque as special guest.

Director General of BSA Liaquat Ali Lucky briefed reporters about the festival on Wednesday.
He said, through this event BSA has been able to patronize 75 dance troops.
Of the troops, 50 have been provided with financial assistance of TK 1 lakh and remaining 25 troops with TK 80,000 each.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is finally back on social media, after a hiatus of nearly four months.
Shah Rukh had stayed away from all social media platforms ever since his son Aryan was held by India's anti-narcotics cops in a drugs-on-cruise case.

Asaduzzaman Noor contracts Covid-19
Renowned actor and Awami League lawmaker Asaduzzaman Noor has once again tested positive for Covid-19.
Noor was found positive for Covid after he underwent a test ahead of joining the winter session of the 11th Parliament on Sunday.

The 75 years old thespian then went back to home and he got admitted to a city hospital on Monday morning to avoid health complications, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Ghulam Quddus told media.
He tested positive for Covid for the first time, back in December 2020.

Actress Tasnuva Tisha has announced she will be tying the knot on February 2 with her fiance Syed Asker
On Saturday, the actress got engaged with her long time partner at her house in Banasree in presence of both the families.
Tasnuva said they will officially register their marriage at first in presence of family members and some close people. Later in the same month they are planning to arrange the wedding ceremony and invite all.

Syed Asker is owner of an event management firm.
