“We’ve identified the three equally important sectors...these three sectors have key role to play for poverty reduction,” said Manfred Fernholz, first secretary and team leader, Food Security and Nutrition, and Sustainable Development at the EU Delegation to Bangladesh.
He was addressing a seminar organised at the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) auditorium in the city on completion of the Food Security 2012 Bangladesh-Ujjibito Project at PKSF.
PKSF Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad presided over the function while its Managing Director Abdul Karim and Deputy Managing Director Golam Tawhid also spoke on the occasion.
The PKSF implemented Ujjibito component of the Food Security Project for the ultra-poor people in 724 unions across the country from 2013-2019.
The project was implemented through 36 selected NGOs with a target to provide food, nutrition and health support to 3.25 lakh ultra-poor people.
Under the project, different activities were run, including setting up of 500 community libraries, employment generation activities for 4,571 physically challenged people and running of school forums.
Manfred said that EU will continue its support for Bangladesh with new projects.
Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman said Bangladesh has been making the best economic progress in the region.
But still there is lot of challenges ahead, he said, adding that despite different efforts, the disparity between the rich and poor is widening.
Kholiquzzaman said the PKSF will continue to support NGOs to run programmes for the ultra-poor people although the EU-supported project has been completed.
