Around 1,000 families in erosion-prone Naria and Bhedarganj upazilas of Shariatpur district were given electricity connections on Saturday for the first time.
Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim inaugurated the electricity supply for the char people.
In the first phase, some 1,000 were given the power connections and a total of 20,000 families in the remote char areas will be given electricity gradually.
About 33KV electricity is being supplied by submarine cable beneath the Padma from Munshiganj district for 1,000 families.
Speaking on the occasion, Shamim said electricity for remote char areas is a special gift from the Prime Minister on the eve of the ‘Mujib Borsho’ marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
