The Electoral Enquiry Committee (the ‘Committee’) on Wednesday served a show-cause notice on Awami League (AL) nominated candidate of Chattogram-3 (Sandwip upazila) Mahfuzur Rahman Mita for his alleged violation of the electoral code of conduct.
According to the notice, signed by the chairman of the Committee for the constituency and Chattogram Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shahidul Islam, the AL-backed candidate on Monday took businessmen of local ‘Ershad Market’ to his house and assured them with providing various benefits if he is elected in the upcoming national parliamentary election billed for January 7 next.
On the same day, the candidate also allured businessmen of Shiberhat by offering diverse advantages. Additionally, he inaugurated his election office at Maitbhanga Cinema Hall area, thereby violating the prescribed electoral conduct.
The Committee issued the notice following the allegations brought by an independent candidate Dr Md Jamal Uddin Chowdhury against Mahfuzur Rahman.
The accused candidate was asked to respond in-person or by his representative at 11 am on December 13.
