He came up with the hope while delivering his speech at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day housing fair organised by the Housing and Public Works Ministry on the occasion of the World Habitat Day observed today with the theme 'Frontier Technologies as an Innovative Tool to Transform Waste to Wealth'.
The President said no compromise with the quality of projects implemented with public money will be tolerated.
Mentioning that the government will be with the businesspeople and provide them with all kinds of support if they do their business honestly, he warned that no leader, officer, engineer, businessman or contractor will be spared if they commit irregularities and corruption, no matter how big they are.
Abdul Hamid said the government will not take the responsibility for the corruption and irregularities of any individual or group. “They themselves will have to take the responsibility for their misdeeds. The implementing authorities and all concerned must take the responsibility.”
From the beginning of the project to the end of the work, the duties of officers, engineers and all concerned must be specified so that any irregularity and corruption in the project can be identified immediately and the responsible person can be punished, he said.
Stressing the importance of strict monitoring to ensure the quality of work and proper use of project money, the President said mega projects like the Padma Bridge one are being implemented with own financing. “Work on the MRT will be completed soon. But for some dishonest people, this achievement of the nation can’t fade away."
Mentioning that the all the government works except small purchases are done by contractors, he warned that fraudulence in the name of business can never be accepted. “Don’t try to withdraw bills without finishing work or completing it partially in connivance with any person or organisation. The mindset of raising project costs through procrastination should be avoided."
Abdul Hamid emphasised turning waste into wealth. "The world is far ahead now. We’ve entered the 4th Industrial Revolution. The world, on the other hand, is moving towards the 5th Generation Industrial Revolution. We need to use the frontier technology properly and innovative idea to convert the waste into wealth to protect the environment."
He urged all to put importance to the waste management by following 5Rs (Rethinking, Refusing, Reusing, Reducing and Recycling) instead of 3Rs to save the mankind and livestock.
The President inaugurated the three-day fair on the premises of Bangabandhu International Conference Centre cutting ribbon.
Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim, Secretary Shahid Ullah Khandaker, UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Housing and Public Works Ministry Engineer Mosharraf Hossain also spoke at the programme.
