Sources at the BGB headquarters said the paramilitary force recovered smuggled goods worth around Tk 1,217.55 crore in 2017 while the amount was Tk 1,161.67 crore in 2016.
The BGB also handed over 2,705 people to local police stations for their alleged involvement in smuggling and 1,316 others for illegal border crossing from January 1 to December 31.
The smuggled items included 93,800 saris, 26,085 three-piece sets, 195.789 kgs of gold, 118,836 metres of clothes, 43,059 readymade garments and 72,470 kgs of Indian tea.
Contraband drugs included 12,658,518 Yaba tablets, 359,150 bottles of Phensidyl syrup, 33.351 kgs of heroin, 13,682 kgs of cannabis, 79,286 bottles of foreign wine, 36,435 cans of bear and 19,448 sedative injections.
The BGB men also seized 63 pistols, eight one-shooter guns, four single barrel guns, one AK-47 rifle, three revolvers, 10 air-pistols, one double-barrel gun, 76 magazines, 372 bullets, 56 crude bombs, 12 bombs, 504 kgs of sulfur and 28 kgs of gunpowder during the period, said BGB Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mohammad Mohsin Reza.
