The programmes include submitting memoranda to Chattogram deputy commissioner and police commissioner on February 25, and holding a human chain on February 26.
City unit BNP President Dr Shahadat Hossain declared the plan of action at a press briefing at the party office and demanded resetting Zia’s name on the museum’s nameplate.
“We declared the programmes protesting against the attempt to rename the museum, smudging Zia’s name and covering his mural with a cloth,” said Shahadat.
“We have given an ultimatum to rub out the smudged ink from the signboard and remove cloth from the mural. If it is not done within February 24, we will launch a movement from February 25,” he warned.
He said they would announce future course of action from the human chain.
Chattogram City BNP General Secretary Abul Kashem Bakkar, BNP central unit Organising Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, Chattogram Lawyers’ Association President Advocate Badrul Anwar, among others, were present in the press meet.
On February 12, members of ruling Awami League front organisations – Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League – smudged Zia’s name from a signboard in front of Zia Memorial Museum in the city. They also put up another signboard there with the photo of Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel.
Earlier, Nowfel, an MP from Chattogram 9, proposed renaming the museum in a Cabinet meeting.
