They remarked this at a seminar on "Public Awareness in Consumers Rights Protection and Role of the government in Social Development" at Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Consumer Rights Protection Committee (CRPC) organised the seminar.
Abu Musa, Religious Secretary of CRPC Said, "We made Sonar Bangla but did not build a safe food environment in the country."
"Unscrupulous businessmen mix formalin with food and vegetable to get extra profit. Actually we are busy to make duplicate foods instead of pure foods here," he added.
Engineer Jakir Hossain said that average life expectancy will be hundred years if we take 100 percent pure foods.
"We look for cheap foods. So businessmen adulterate foods. Bangladesh took better position in food production but could not make safe food. As a result people suffer various diseases," he added.
Advocate Ashraful Haider said that the country's people are not aware about their rights.
“Everyone should know about consumers rights," he also said.
Bangla Daily Bhorer Dak newspaper editor KM Belayet Hossain said, "We lost our ethical sense. So we have to eat adulterated food."
"We noticed that detergent has got in milk but sadly BSTI has no logistic machines to test some goods including milk. However the government and people have to work together to protect our food," he added.
He further said, "We developed in various sectors but could not realize consumer rights."
Additional Secretary of Food Ministry Omar Faruque said that such discussions about consumer rights is a must to raise awareness.
"However, are we now conscious about our rights? Do we read what was written on wrapping of products? Products seller and buyers all have a responsibility," he said.
"We can make a Sonar Bangla when we build adulteration-free Bangladesh," he said.
He added that there was a food crisis in 1971 when population was just 7.5 crore. Now more than 16 crore people live in the country who want pure foods.
"Food Ministry once thought to produce foods only. Now we think about quality of goods. The government formulated Safe Food Law in 2013. Awareness among people is needed to implement the law,” he also said.
Director General of Power Cell Mohammad Hossain said that the demand of consumers has changed now. All people should know about their rights.
