Dhaka, Sept 11 (UNB) – The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule seeking explanation as to why the government should not procure paddy directly from farmers as per the Domestic Food Grain Procurement Policy 2017.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Khairul Alam issued the rule after hearing a writ petition.
Agriculture and food secretaries, and Directorate General of the Directorate General of Food were asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Jatiya Krishak Samity General Secretary Aminul Islam Golap filed the writ petition.
The writ said only people loyal to local representatives and associated with the ruling party get the scope to supply paddy to government silos and none of them is are marginal farmers.
In some cases, they buy paddy from poor farmers at cheaper rates and sell those at high prices.
As a result, farmers who grow paddy taking loans cannot even recoup their production cost after selling paddy.
