In Shariatpur, a joint team of River Police and Fisheries department conducted drives in the Padma River on Thursday evening to Friday morning and arrested 44 fishermen along with three lakh meters of current net and 200 kgs hilsa from six fishing trawlers.
Later, Executive Magistrate Abdullah Al-Mamun, also upazila assistant commissioner (land), handed them different jail terms.
In Bhola, another mobile court sentenced 37 fishermen to one year jail each in sadar upazila.
Md Asaduzzaman, senior fisheries officer, said a joint team of Fisheries Department, coast guard and police conducted several drives in Meghna-Tentulia River and arrested 41 fishermen along with 10,000 meters of current nets.
Besides, the mobile court fined four fishermen to TK 5,000 each instead of sending them to jail for being underage.
In Sirajganj, a mobile court on Thursday night jailed 7 fishermen for 15 days jail term each for netting hilsa in Jamuna River at Ghorjan and Bhutermor areas in Chouhali Upazila.
The court also seized around 13,000 meters current net which was later set on fire.
The convicts are Abdul Malek, 23, Sohel Rana, 22, Ratan Sheikh, 20, Ershad Ali, 30, and Saiful Islam, 25, all hailing from Chaluhara village and Samsul Haque, 25, of Khaspukhuria village and Hanif Sheikh, 24, of Fulhara village of the same upazila.
